Just got the Denon X1500

Well after a very long hard grueling few days of trying to decide whether to go for the X1500 or the Ecler Nuo5, I finally decided on the Denon, I'll post more details later after I've mixed with it for a couple hours, but heres what I posted over on www.dn-x1500.com .

If you guys have any questions, feel free to ask.

Thanks guys, the version is 6591, gotta say I love how many options there is on this thing, I was kinda expecting afew on the effects end, but not all those options on the sampler, it was kinda overkill for me, spent about 4 hours with it lastnight, and was messing with the options so much I only actually mixed about 3 tracks.

Heres my mini review of the mixer so far.

Pros:
Sampler
Effects
Great Sound
Very Good Price
Matrix System
EQs Work Great
Stereo/Mono Switch
Faders Are Like Butter

Cons:
Heat (I wanna put this in a coffin, but read about one guy on here having major problems with it gettin to hot)
Slight Fader Delay (I'm sure this will be fixed with an update though)
EQ Cut (Even though they work and sound great, it would be nice to have a full kill, dunno if you guys can do this with an update)
The Key Effect (I just can't get it to sound good unless there is no beat or just not much going on, but that might be a problem from not using it properly)
Fader Knobs (nothing really, just the clearcoat on its coming off, Denon should save some time and just not coat them)

Reasons I Bought This Over Ecler, it was tough, I'm a huge fan of Ecler.
This mixer has more features.
I like how it can be updated.
Even though I think the Ecler Sounds better, it only beats Denon very slightly, unless your some hardcore Audiophile, I'd rather have more features over slightly better sound.
Its Cheaper.
I'm certain that either Denon will bring out a rotary kit, or somebody will have instructions soon on how to make your own.
VU Meters on each channell, the Ecler does not.
Even though I know Eclers build quality is awesome, I know that Denon make some outstanding Home Theater gear, so they know how to make electronics, also there part of Marantz which I'm a fan of for there exellent quality.

Well I'm done, hope this helps anyone considering buying this unit, it is a top notch mixer, and as for those cons, the only real problem is the heat if you wanna put it in a coffin, and I'm wondering how it would perform outside on a hot summers day, but I'm sure there is a way to fix this with some good ol computer fans.

This is a demo unit I took home while they order me a new one since there out of stock, it had been looked over by a Denon rep and I was told it had an update, the Denon rep on the site asked what version I had so as you can see I told him, and he said its NOT the update, so now I got more to look forward to.

let us know how u get on with it, as i own 2 denon 5000's and thinking of getting the 1500 in the near future to compliment what i have. Your absolutly right a new update is due out in september, which will sort out the fader lag issue, wet/dry issus on filter and 9 other as well that i couldnt be bothered to read. So be excited brother, be very excited the mixer just better. Check out www.dn-s5000.com for more info.

Hmm, yeah, I've been going back and forth between upgrading to the x1500 or the Nuo5 for quite some time. Still not entirely sure, but at the moment I think I'm leaning towards the Ecler.

i have a question

how do you update the mixer then? is there a cable connecting the mixer to the computer and you can just dl the update?

or is there another way?

Posted by Dj Ricky H on Aug-30-2004 15:06:

Yeah...it's all done through the USB....all u need is a standard printer usb cable, download the free drivers, and wait for the software to come out. I have the mixer too, and can't wait for the new software!!..

Well so far I've fallen in love with this mixer, I am really glad I got it over the Ecler, this mixer has more of what I want, the Ecler is still an outstanding mixer, but this one was for me, I could take it back and get the Nuo if I wanted to, so its not like I'm saying this cos I'm stuck with it, I'm really looking forward to the update as I know how much they improved the S5000 from when it came out, the only real beef I have with this mixer is the heat it makes, it gets REALLY fuckin hot, I've had it on for about 3 days now, constantly working, and no sign of any problems or sound degrading, Denon said its ok to work hot, but DAM, anyway, I'm keeping it on for about another week, gonna continue to cane the crap out of it, as much as I can, and will keep you guys updated, but I think that the heat won't be a problem, but I'll see as on the next hot summers day, I'll take it outside and do mixing out there, gonna put this under extreme DJ conditions and see how it holds up.

Awesome review. I'll stay tuned for the updates on it. Might sway me towards getting it instead of the Ecler.

Cool, I'll keep coming back now and then to let people know the truth, and help people out.

I know I must sound like an advertisement for Denon with all this praise, but believe me, if theres one hiccup from this mixer, its going straight back, its just theres not much info out there about this mixer it seems, we can all find a couple good reviews on the Ecler, but I haven't found one on the Denon, and even though this isn't a professional review, just aslong as I get the facts across thats all I want, I had a heard time deciding from so little info out there, and so now people can read all this, then the Ecler reviews and make a better choice for themselves.

Heres some more to add to the mini review.

I upgraded my cables to some really good Monster Cables, and the sound is much better (and I still gotta upgrade my speaker wire).

Key FX, I messed with this more, what this does is if you play a record and you have to pitch it to like 8% well we know that that it will sound pretty messed up, well you can then turn this effect on select -8% (or whatever you want +/- 100%) and have it sound like it was never pitched up, but will be running faster, the problem is with it though, is in order for it to sound relatively good, you have to have it on 100% wet, so its either fully on or fully off, plus even when its fully on, there is a slight double beat, this I believe they will fix in the future with an update, but I still don't think that you could ever have it sound perfect, a DSP processor can only work so fast, but if they pull it off, then this effect will be amazing for harmonic mixing.

Headphone amp, I noticed there is some slight noise in the background even when nothing is selected and the volume is right down, I only noticed this now, since I never really have headphones on with no sound coming out of them, but as soon as you play some music, you can't hear it any more.

also forgot to mention it has digital out (coaxial, not optical) so you can record in true digital style for anyone who really gives a dam.

hope this helps some.

More to come the more I hammer this beast.

is it like a zip effect? the efx500 has this and if you really fuck with it you can get some wicked sounds. if i were you, forget about using it to correct keys.

Yea, I'm not using it for correcting keys, I use my ears for that , was just saying it could maybe be used for it if it worked perfect.

I dunno if its like the Zip effect, I don't think I've heard that effect before, do you know where I can go that I could hear a sample?

no idea mate, as far as i know there isn't an efx500 demo vid or anything...

have u used a djm600? it has a very similar effect called 'pitch'. the zip is very similar but it fucks it up a little more. its great for making yourself sound like jabba the hut!

My mates just got one of these they are mad, some great effects and the sound quality is awesome.

Any idea when the updates will be avaliable?

DAMN DENON... kidding.. they got some great products, but anyone who has the mixer prolly cares more about the updates being released compared to seeing the new website... The new website should be awesome... but seriously... give us the updates already..

Posted by jago on Oct-06-2004 08:19:

apparently i heard that with any new software or hardware that is developed or introduced, u need to get the rights to the equipment and software. Denon have just released 2 new mixers and a cd deck as well as 5 updates for the denon 5000's and 8 or 10 updates for the 1500 mixer, so as u can see takes time for the courts to sort out the rights to who owns everything. Hope that clears things up alittle, until then sit tight and wait like everyone else.

by making the original prototypes of software, they already have the rights to it as the owners of intellectual material. what might be taking the time is where countries with dumb-ass laws on copyright require copyright registration. in which case they should release it to UK customers

with hardware, they should have had all the relevent patents sorted out before they even release the equipment for sale! otherwise you can get people rippping it up to find out how it works, copy it, put their name on it and sell it.

if they didn't they are idiots.
