Shame / Disagreement Your most embarassing moment as a DJ :)

Have you ever made any big mistakes while mixing and DJ'ing? If so how did the crowd react? How embarassing was it? Share your stories

I'll tell you on Tuesday after my first club gig on Monday night...

I was spinning a party in Guelph and as I watched the record go more and more crap just kept on building up and up until the point where the needle just slid across the whole record making a great scratching sound as it went! All I could do was take the shit off and start it again! Fortunately there weren't too many people there...

I once had the pitch contol on the turntable go out while I was playing, the record sounded like and alvin & the chipmunks song. All music in the club stopped for about 15 min while they tracked down a new table.

One time in a middle of a gig the amp blew up.. there was no music for about 20 minutes till someone brought a new amp.

Hey,

I was DJ'ing at this party back home...my friend and I were alternating sets...I'd play for an hour and then he'd play for an hour...The person who wasn't playing at any given time was drinking...and its safe to say that by my like 4 set at like 2:40am..i was drunk as balls. I started putting on the Beegees and shit..."Uh Uh Uh Uh, Stayin' Alive" ahahah..

^^^^LOL! "stayin alive! stayin' alive!" that's tight!

i'm a rookie so i haven't played in a club yet but the first house party i did.... well i was mixing into lost tribe's gamemaster and it was probably the first transition where i had beatmatched well. (i was playing for friends so they weren't too hard on me). but anyways i was all stoked cuz it was a good mix and i'm just dancing away behind the tables with my eyes closed. then when i open them everyone is just standing around staring at me. i figured it's cuz i'm dancing like a fiend and all but then i take my headphones off and realize that there's no music coming out of the speakers cuz i left the crossfader all the way to the 2 position when i was spinnin' gamemaster out of 1. the perils of being a headphone dj. that's the best story so far but i'm sure i'll have more to come. i've got my first club gig on oct. 13th possibly. it's my friend's bachelor party and we're renting out a venue to throw him a rave and they might let me spin the first hour or so. i'll let you know how it goes if it happens.

i was really high on a couple of hits of XTC on new years eve and i was spinning up a great set at my friends party... anywho, i was so high i was running around while not mixing and hugging the speaker towers and shizat

not really embarassing, but stupid nonetheless

um, as for embarassing....
i blew a speaker once and it was spewing out smoke
i just calmly unplugged it and turned it around while i blew all the smoke out of there
ahh, that was a night i'll never forget

Cool

it wasnt me but it was funny. i was at a house party and this happy hardcore dj played for about 10 minutes, with this stoned mc going crazy. i think hardcore rave music is so shit its funny, anyway the dj went to swap records in the box and him and the mc collided sending his whole collection flying! some people picked them up but most people started throwing them round, everyone was totally drunk. needless to say the dj has since become less of a show off and likes hard house now.

well i have this friend who is a DJ at a club, which i might get the job at next week ... cross your fingers guys.... anyways last year before i even thought about becoming a DJ i was up in the booth with him and i kinda had an idea of how things worked. well my friend asked me if i'd like to do the next mix cause he wanted to run off to the bar or something. anyways i was mixing from a hip-hop to another hip-hop and as i moved the fader across there was no sound and i started panicing, whats wrong? i was petrified. its playing and all but no sound... so he comes running up to the booth and lifts up the volume knob, i hadn't relized it was down... well he said it was also his fault and that the break wasnt for long and no-body even recognized it (ya right) needless to say i felt really bad afterwards... oh well there werent more than like 10 people on the dance floor

HEY THAT WAS MY HOUSE!

heheh..umm..most embarassing, well beside my boss being a complete fool on the mic and makin an ass of us both, Id say it was when I blew main power 6 times in 30 minutes, I couldnt figure out what was goin on..the I realized that the playstation we had was plugged into the same circuit, so whenever the kids started to play on it, power would blow..then my crossover fucked up and I lost channel 2 on the bass amp...so I had to double up on the banana clips and run mono for the rest of the dance. Oh did I mention this was my first show by myself? I was on the phone with Tech support tryin to make sure I had done everything possible b4 goin from stereo to mono...

Smoking ..umm..something FUNNY SHITE

I was a resident at this night club in toronto and by 1am I had a few beverages in me...Well I was jumpin and dancin during the mix and when I went to bring the slider down, (I wasnt using the crossfader) my hand was on the master volume!! The main speakers went quiet and the monitor was blaring!! I couldent tell the mains were off so I kept dancing and jumping till my partner came and turned the mains back up... I then went to the bar for another drink!! I think the 500 or so people in the club came and shook my hand afterwards. Yes I was embarrased!!

oh no! not the gamemaster! that's the best song ever!

it mixes so good with robert miles - children

Well, since I've only ever done one gig...

It wasn't exactly embarrassing (well, not for me, anyway) but some complete twat decided to lean over to look at the mixer or something, and spilt his beer all over the record I had cued up, ready to mix in, ooh, about 10 seconds time. BASTARD!! As you can imagine, I screamed at him, took the record off quickly and wiped it down, and slammed it back on and mixed it in quick before the last one ran out. Not the best mix ever, but under the circumstances I think it was pretty good.

He bought me a pint afterwards to apologise though, so it wasn't all bad.

Posted by djdawn on Oct-04-2001 15:19:

well, we had a thread like this before, but anyway...nice stories so far.
Strange nobody mentioned taking the needle off the wrong record after the mix...that's always good for an embarassing moment
Another nice one happened in a club where they had a system that was WAAAY too large. They had no limiter and the master volume on the Pioneer mixer was only at 1.5 or 2 at the most. Well, after a mix I took off the (right) record and turned to my bag. While turning I somehow touched the master and turned it down all the way so the music was gone. Of course I wanted to bring it back as fast as possible so I slammed the master volume all the way up. It was SOO LOOOOUD, it blew everybody away. I quickly adjusted the volume, but everbody on the floor had their fingers in their ears
they, weren't mad, though...

And at Loveparade 2000, there was some stupid f**k who managed to knock the needle off my record twice in like 5 minutes...and it's always the DJ who takes the blame.

*makes a note to get some damn sturdy turntables, not get drunk, get a regulated power supply, and some shielded wires, and to be armed*

Did I miss anything?
