I never get notified unless I specifically choose to be notified. Kaos, can't you just:

Use 'Email Notification' by default?
Using this option emails you whenever someone replies to a thread that you have participated in.

click on no

-->bottom of page

click on submit modifications...

Voila!?

You know this, right?

for some reason sometimes I receive them, sometimes I dont...

You can accidentally subscirbe to a thread by clicking the link at the bottom of every thread's page. Ive done this as well as accidentally tabbing to it and hitting enter, which has resulted in my recieving a smattering of random post notifications. Simply login to the thread and click the unsubscribe link.
