How long do you listen to each track when you're in the record store?

Usually I dont give the whole track a listen, I just skip thru it. I can usually tell if a record fits my "sound" by only a bit of it. And if it catches my attention I listen to more. I go thru stacks of vinyl like its my job. Usually I give a track 1 minute minimum, 30 secs for DnB cause its more repetitive/predictable. I can go thru about 30 records in about an hour and usually I'll pick only 4 or 5. Of course, those 4 or 5 get much more attention than 1 minute.

Yea, I'm pretty fast when it comes to picking out tracks. I listen for maybe 45 seconds, skipping from intro to the main, and the breakdown. I go though about 60 records in an hour, but I do take my time with the ones that get my attention.

i've usually heard most of them on the internet somewhere before i buy them at the store hehehe...so i usually know what i'm buying...i usually just check em out and make sure they are not scratched and shit. the tracks that i haven't heard before i might listen a good deal more...mostly cause i don't wanna buy crap...

i judge on melody, beat, and sometimes vocals. if i even listen to 10 seconds of it and i like the melody, i will get it

i like to hear a good couple of minutes worth of what i am buying, skipping through to important bits etc etc

if its one thing i hate, its those people who listen to 5 minutes of each record in a pile of 20, while you are waiting to get on the turntable.

i'm exactly the same way.

i know what i like and don't like very, very quickly. but the stuff that grabs my attention a bit more i listen to a bit longer.

Thats the same for me... cept our shop never has 60 EDM tracks to pick out and listen too...

I make my first selection by listening to beginning, break, end of the break for about 30 secs/ record. After I made that selection, I listen to them somewhat more carefull to make my final choice

^^^^^^ Yea thats exactly what I do. But sometime I have a bad habit of buying certian records when I am in a certian mood only to ask myself a week later why I bought this crap. I am trying to be more "careful" buying records now. I usually try to listen to the song 3 or 4 times over and over until I can difitively say "yes its good".

Same here, unless its a track I know about, then I just check to see that the record is in good condition, I'm also VERY picky now, as I can and have got way out of hand sometimes, I'm always looking for that certain sound, that is my style.

I also hate those twats that listen to the entire record near enough, next time I'm gonna smack then over acroos the face with there record then make them eat it.

I probably dont give tracks im not familiar with enough of a chance, now that i think of it...oh well. I dont have enough money to buy records i might not like.

Posted by Floorfiller on Sep-06-2004 07:21:

i think a lot of people go in the store and think its somehow cool to pick out tunes fast...i dunno why. not saying any of you are that way, but when i'm in the store...i can tell some people are that way like...oh look at me i dj and i listen to tracks real fast hahahaha

When I go in knowing I'm gonna spend an hour in there, I like to warm up listening to some hiphop, then some breaks, then I dig into the crates and pick out all the discount records and find the gems.

as brief as possible

can normally tell within seconds of listening to a particular mix if i will buy it

Posted by D Dubya on Sep-06-2004 23:28:

In a record store, I will listen for about 2 minutes skipping through the main parts of the tracks and whatever remixes. If it's online then I will usually give the whole sample a listen before deciding whether or not to buy. I hate buying online - I always end up buying a ton on every order because I like so much of what I hear.
