Thumbs up Remixed Classics...

We always talk about how newer-ish remixes of old classics always turn out bad. But lets not think negatively at this moment and pause to talk about the remixes of classics that actually turned out enjoyable.

For me it would have to be:

Binary Finary - 1998 (Ronski Speed Remix)
3 Drives On Vinyl - (G&M Project Remix)
Push - Universal Nation (Push Remix)
William Orbit - Adagio For Strings (Ferry Corsten Remix)
BK - Revolution (Alphazone Remix)
Lost Tribe - Gamemaster (Matt Darey Remix)
Paul van Dyk - For An Angel (Nu-NRG Remix)

And though many might disagree but I'm one who liked it:

Martin Roth & Frank Ellrich - The Orange Theme (Martin Roth Remix)

There are more recent ones that have just hit the scene like the remixes of "Synaesthesia" but I have not heard them yet.

how good is the NU-NRG remix for "for an angel"?

i mean hard to imagine a NU-NRG style with this beauty.

Posted by Dan1584 on Sep-06-2004 20:21:

^^^
It's medium-hard style from Nu-NRG...all I can say is that they made the song their own and didn't copy and paste it and add little effects, they did something with it and made it into a new song.

them new remixes of gamemaster r rubbish compared to the original
i like
braingbug - nightmare (ingo mix) better than the original
marco v - indicator (reworx 2003) the best version

Posted by Floorfiller on Sep-06-2004 20:41:

actually i didn't like any of these...

Binary Finary - 1998 (Ronski Speed Remix)
3 Drives On Vinyl - (G&M Project Remix)
Push - Universal Nation (Push Remix)
Lost Tribe - Gamemaster (Matt Darey Remix)
Paul van Dyk - For An Angel (Nu-NRG Remix)

and i don't think you can really include the ferry mix of adagio for strings because his remix was the version that made it a classic.

Posted by Dan1584 on Sep-06-2004 20:44:

^^^
Good point, forgot about that...

then it shall be replaced with:

Tiesto - Adagio For Strings

Not a bad track, i liked Ellrich's Mix too.But the Original Mix is still the best.

Cygnus X - Superstring [Rank 1 Remix]
Tony Walker - Fields Of Joy [Flutlicht Remix]
U96 - Das Boot 2001 [Schiller Remix]
Copiloten - Der Absturz (I think the original was:Final Fantasy - Controlling Transmission.Original is very good,
but this is maybe even better...one of my favorite tunes!)

Get a fucking clue.

Posted by GrimReaper on Sep-06-2004 21:57:

My contributions to the subject could be something like this:

* Kirsty Hawkshaw - Fine Day 2002 (James Holden Remix) >> nice smooth'n'deep update of Opus III's (of whose original vocalist Kirsty is btw) 1991 classic.
* Age Of Love - The Age Of Love 2004 (Wrecked Angle Remix) >> only decent enough out of the 2004 mixes to get my full attention, great breaks version which goes almost to the level of the classic Jam & Spoon's Watch Out For Stella Remix from 1992.
* Tilt - Children (Tilt's Courtyard Mix) >> Tilt crew did a great remake of Robert Miles' classic and the result is IMO even better than the original.
* Moonman - Galaxia (Solar Stone Remix) >> wonderfully flowing epic trance remix of Corsten's mid 90s old(er) skool trancer.

My notes on the first post:
* Ronski Speed Remix of 1998/2003 has energy but not much else.. pretty boring remix all'n'all. Older mixes are better.
* G&M Project of Greece 2000 is plain awful generic 200* trancer and much worse than the older mixes.
* Mike did an ok job with his own update of Universal Nation but as a remix Oliver Lieb Remix is soooo much better.
* All the older mixes of Gamemaster are much better than the 2003 mixes, if i need to pick a remix, i'd choose Lost Tribe's '99 (which is Darey's best REMIX of it being loyal to original) mix which is still far from the original's magic.
* Not a fan of Nu NRG's remix of For An Angel either.. not my thing.
* Roth & Ellrich did a crappy job updating Orange Theme. They couldn't even get close to the divine greatness of Man With No Name, Solar Stone or Moonman remixes.

Perhaps i'll add something tomorrow if i come up with any...

For me the best remixes of classics have been where the remixer has taken the original in a different direction.

Energy52 - Cafe Del Mar (John 00 Fleming Mix) and Miro - By Your Side (Sonorous Mix) were both really well done and worthy updates.

But yeah sadly most remixes of classics are generic money making tosh, latest being Cloudwalking 2004

Posted by torontotrance on Sep-06-2004 22:17:

Most remixes of classic songs are just plain money grabs by the label or original artist, matt darey is guilty as charged, same with others.

Now when Cass and Slide added the vocal mix to their song, that was genius. It got released as original and vocal, so it does not quite qualify. Same goes with Touch Me (which was a dub I hear) then the vocal as added. Tilt did an amazing job with their courtyard mix of fooking children.

Bedrock - Heaven Scent (Yunus Guvenen Mix)
Binary Finary - 1998 (Gouryella Remix)

I find these almost as good as the originals.

I normally despise remakes, but these ones are really nice:

Three Drives - Greece 2000 (Plastic Angel Mix)

I agree with Grim about the G&M Project mix but PA did his really well IMO, subtle sounds and avoids going over the top.

Chakra - I Am (Wrecked Angle Mix)

Wrecked Angle also know how to update a classic in style, this one is a simply massive prog breaks rework.

I don't like any of the ones you posted originally, though. More if I think of them.

I liked Ahmea(Giottos mix)by Flutlicht. The melody with the hard synth gave me chills the first time i heard it.Dunno if its a classic, but this was one of the trax that pulled me into Trance

i don't get why people think these tunes are so good! imo they're both pretty fucking weak. the eskimo remix of voodoo people in particular. the original voodoo people on the other hand is IMO the best thing prodigy has done. and well the Txitxarro Mix of in silence is just bland fluff trance IMO. personally i think the gary d. mix of silence is pretty nice and the only good tune gary d. has ever been involved in! all in all i don't agree with your points, but then that's life!

altho i should prefer lieb's mix, because i like lieb a lot better than ferry, but in this case ferry owns hand down IMO!
