A State of Trance....
Ok.. time to start a shit flinging match
(yes I started this thread on another site, but thought might as well do it here too
)
What are your thoughts on ASOT?
Is it good or bad for trance?
Personally I've been finding alot of tracks coming out aren't pushing any boundries and seem to be aimed at the ASOT sound (Absolutely Stale and unOriginal Trance) which has a pretty big following?
Now please note I said "alot" not "All" tracks, so don't start on me about me generalising entirely I do know there are a couple of tracks coming up for release on ASOT that are wicked.. but then the others are just ..

it's hit and miss, like you would expect it to be, i mean come on.. there's how many days in between shows, 7? how many decent tunes come out EVERY week? not many.
oh yes, I thought I best clarify, i'm talkin about the label AND the radio show
personally, i think ASOT (the show & the label really as a subsidary of the radio show) are good for the scene..
it really is the slightly more 'commercial' side of trance, which has meant its reached more corners of the globe and really its not a bad thing.. its a professionally done show, which gives great exposure to alot of great producers and guest dj's...
obviously not everyone is going to like the tracks that come out on the show all the time, but well who does...
I like both the radio show and the label, generally. Sure there are tracks that i dont like, but those can be skipped over. I think asot is good for trance in that it isnt pushing that horrible techy direction like other labels are (ala black hole).
i think you guys are getting worked up over nothing. When ASOT starts playing Lasgo, DJ Sammy and Alice Deejay then you should be worried.
only bad thing about it i think is now all the chinstrokers call u an armin wannabe if u play some tunes that he has played on there (which happens to be the majority of trance tunes coming out).
but otherwise i like it... listen to it every week always a good place to hear new tunes
oh and the label.... theres been some quality tunes come out on it.. and like neil mentioned above its aimed out that specific sound which i just happen to like (most of the time)
As long as people dont take it as gospel and as the only music worth playing / listening to, then it can only be good for trance. It's a show/label of one type of music of one type of genre, it isn't everything but if people take it as the only option then it causes problems with lots of armin van clones.
I download 1 or 2 ASOT shows once every couple of months or so. I don't have a major problem with it although I think a lot of the music played gets a bit stale.
Label: ASOT releases so many tracks that i think the novelty of a tune being signed to it is becoming less and less significant. Having said that, the releases are consistently quality and so long as they keep supporting Outback i'm happy.
Show: I think the show's a perfect way to keep listeners updated. The only people who wouldnt like this show are the jaded types who get angry coz they want to have more knowledge of new releases than other people, but Armin makes it easy for people who live lives outside the trance scene to follow it. I can sorta understand their bitterness as it, in a way, commercialises trance, but in my opinion if you like it, it shouldnt matter if it makes the top 40 and 13 year old girls love it.
Thus, I am all for ASOT, and may it live on until i too become jaded and am forced to slag Armin.
doubling up on threads heubor?

re: 5am
fuck off ASOT
Hrmm some interesting thoughts on this ..
Thanks for your insightful input rez.
its better than any radio show that australia has to offer
nuff said
i think a state of trance does what Lew.D said...it allows listeners to be up to date with new releases from the trance scene..it gives us a chance to have a listen to whats gonna be doing the rounds in quiet a few record boxes for a month or 3 to come
of dj's that play the same style as armin. it gives the song good recognition..and although it is a hit n miss some weeks, still has plenty of variety to offer the listeners.
Besides us trance addicts down here, who else would really know about ASOT besides a few friends that we might share a couple of decent sets with?? In europe its a different story..but i highly doubt people who dont have an interest in dance music in general really take any notice, therefore it not being as commercial as a few people have said it could be
Never listened to ASOT. But i'm sure i wouldnt mind it. Just prefer not to listen to shows, or other peoples sets for that matter. I'd much rather see people live.
i think you and i are on the same page about tech trance =)

ASOT has done a great deal for online trance community. On the positive side its main purpose, as many here has stated is education for the masses. More and more people knows what good music is, and ASOT has excels at it.
On the negative side, the repetitiveness of tunes (eg. Armin-style) can also leads to its demise. IMO, ASOT should not be treated as the holy bible of trance tunes, there are also great unsigned releases (although maybe not as many as ASOT) on radioshows from the likes of PvD, Blank & Jones, Marco V, et al. each with their own unique, signature sound.
..jadedness is imminent if you dedicate 20Gb HD space exclusively for ASOT episodes
.. it's more fun finding out about tunes when it gets played on the dancefloor, or browsing through your fave recordshop shelf, rather than sitting down at home, waiting for the download to finish
