hmm normally I would say get a real setup, but its obvious you don't want that at this time in your life, so for just mixing some MP3s together there are these:

PCDJ
Traktor
AtomixMP3
DigitalTurntables
Mixmeister
MixVibes

there are others, but there the main ones.

Traktor seems to be the best for most people, but I think the best easy BPM matching one is AtomixMP3, but dunno for sure, I don't spin MP3s.

New version

I am mixing MP3 and the program I use is the "replacement" of atomix mp3 and it's called VIRTUAL DJ (www.virtualdj.com)

Works nice and do what I need!

While I don't agree with mixing mp3s you have downloaded...I don't see anything wrong with mixing off of a laptop. I use AtomixMP3, once you set up the keyboard shortcuts, it's a breeze to use.

Dude get off your high horse. Guess what? A lot of DJs are using/incorporating laptops in their sets now.. BT, M.I.K.E., even j00f is considering going ALL laptop. You know something they don't?

I don't want to hijack this thread but that's just a rude comment.

Traktor is the only one i have experience with, and its fine.

Ummm...you know there are sites where you can buy mp3's. Not everyone who plays mp3's steals them. There are acually tracks available for download that you cannot get on vinyl. The more DJs use CDs the more we will see download sites popping up.

Yes indeed, just by the way this post started you can see he is spinning with illegal mp3's, and yes I don't care if you call me rude, but any 'DJ' that spins with stolen music is worth absolutely nothing in my eyes. And it's even worse if he makes money of of it like plenty do nowadays.

Posted by tvmann on Sep-08-2004 20:24:

OK, back up your statement by giving us some names (if you have any) of laptop DJs who are using illegal mp3s at public events.

Anyone who is serious about laptop DJing is not going to do that. They will rip their own MP3s or Wavs from their records or commercial CDs, or buy them as digital downloads from sites like www.beatport.com, www.releaserecords.com, or www.bedrock.uk.net

How on earth would I know what famous DJ spins with illegal mp3's .. really HOW ? I'm talking about the self-proclaimed DJ's in my entourage. Famous only to those who care and who went to a party where they spinned, smalltown shit, but still so wrong when you make even just 200$ a night just by spinning illegal mp3's on illegal software on a legal laptop. because yes, that program you guys recommended, will be downloaded aswell. But call me a liar whatever, you all know that's the way it works. And yes I'm sure your favourite DJ actually did buy his software, I don't have a problem with people that don't steal shit to make profit. I am talking about illegal stuff here.

Posted by DannyO on Sep-08-2004 20:31:

I ain't no saint, but when it comes to DJin, I'm fully legit and have no respect for anybody doing anything illegal, I will admit I've downloaded MP3s illegally, but that was awhile, and now I only download select track to see if I should get it on vinyl, but I only do this if I can't find a sample anywhere, as for spinning, if I ain't bought it, I ain't spinning it.

I'm interested in these new MP3 sites though, as I'm looking to buy Serato Scratch Live, and it would be nice to buy a cheap MP3 at like 192k or above and spin that till I can get it on vinyl.

I dunno who would spin a set in a club on a laptop though, unless its a live PA or something using Ableton, or like I said, there using FS or SSL.

Wow man chill, don't take the internet so seriously, some people think the only way to spin is with the right gear, but you explained you can't get that right now anyway, I think for what your doing its fine, as long as its legit, if you said you wanna really get into it and learn how to really DJ, then I would say drop the software pickup the hardware, but you ain't doing that right now, hopefully in the future you can though.

That is so not what's being said here man, read the replies and not just the ones that are written in CAPS If by saying that the material you use shouldn't be stolen gets you pissed, well then, that's not my fault.

Posted by BelgianGuru on Sep-08-2004 21:15:

it's kinda cool to see the reactions here though. In the production forum where people are still dreaming to sell their own music, they are all the way with you when you're going against mp3. But when you say it in the DJ booth you get absolute garbage replies (not all of them of course) 'Yes but I think it's ok to use (steal) mp3's for personal use, I mean it's not like you're making money from it or anything' Well you are ripping of the artist and his label. That's what i'm saying with the fruit and car reply, but I'm guess I should've known better and replied in caps lol, with plenty of !!!! in the sentences aswell :O

It doesn't get me pissed, but I have respect for the artists and would rather buy there tracks and help them make more with my money, its like a big circle , I want something, I give them moeny for what I want, then they make more of what I want, and then they get more of my money, everybodys happy, if nobody pays for the music, the industry wouldn't disappear, but it wouldn't be anything like it is today.
