Evil1 Technics RP-DH1200 headphones review

Do not buy these headphones unless you only do single ear monitoring.

First the good: they are stylish and comfortable... they fit nice on my head, with EXCELLENT sound quality.

But... that sound quality means nothing because these headphones have absolutely no noise cancelling effects. You will have these on and you can hear everything around you, including conversations people are having 10 feet away (no joke). What happens is you have a monitor speaker blasting away and you have to jack up your headphone volume to dangerous levels so you can hear whats in them. So one side is very loud with the track playing (because of the speaker you can hear everything) and the other side with the cue'd track is barely audible. I had a set last night and it was very frustrating. I found the headphones box so I'm returning these asap. They cost $150.

I have the pioneer dedj-5000's which cancel out noise great but the sound quality is deteriorating on me. I guess I'll go for the hdj-1000 next.

Is this the new technics model??

I've recently reverted back to using my technics rpdj1200's from the pioneers.

Fuckin love them to bits, the only thing i find annoying is the earcup doesn't swivel.

Posted by Freak on Sep-10-2004 16:08:

yeah its the new model- just been released.
It looks impressive, but ill reserve judgement until ive tried them.
Cheers for the info

Unknown dj- absolutely nothing. Check my past threads for this farce- the last pair broke after three uses (although the original pair did last 6 months before something broke and rattled inside)...sony syndrome all over again.

I recently did a checkup with our warranty database. Apparantly we've received more broken HDJ-1000's then Sony MDR-V700's! You're not the only one

Thanks for the review! i was just about to pick up a pair, but with no sound isolation, it looks like ill be sticking with my rpdjs.

i got both this and the rpdj1200. have yet to test them in a really loud environment so i got nothing much to say. i like them though...

I can vouch for that.

I've also sent back three pairs.

We've sold more V700's then HDJ's, simply because the V700 is older. During the hype we also sold a lot of HDJ's, and more then 1 in 10 breaks.

you should try the sennheisser HD280 pros, they block out a metric fuckload of sound (that's more than an imperial fuckload if you were wondering)

i was mowing the lawn with them on, and could barely tell the lawnmower was on!

I have the older technics models...the rpdj1200 and love em. Yeah, the lack of swivel on the cups does suck though. the new techs look like mdr-v700 rip offs if you ask me.

ahhhh damn! i would love to see the faces of everyone who said that the hdj would outlast the v700s i am always worried of my 700s breaking, but i guess i dont have to worry as much as i thought

Posted by tu_face on Sep-13-2004 14:57:

hd280 pro's rock. i would say they keep out a metric fuckload of ambient noise

although some people have reported hairline fractures in the headband occuring. mine have just started to do this after just under a year (they have lasted longer than any other headfones i have had!)

why the hell can't anybody make good headfones that last more than a year or so? it seems that all the top headfones always break within 6 months to a year!

This does NOT mean a v700 doesn't break! The V700 has a construction error in the tube above the earpad, when you pressure that tube too much (if you remove the earpads from eachother, for instance, if you want to mix, you put them under pressure) they WILL break. My pair shows a small fracture as well, so it's a matter of time.

This problem occurs with the V500 and V700. This problem does NOT occur with the V600 and V900!

Well that's the scam isn't it? There's no profit in making an item last forever - once your core base is saturated with your product and it doesn't break, who else is going to buy them?

Sadly there's no incentive to make good headphones that will last year in, year out. They'd be expensive as hell, but I think there's enough of a market to warrant such a headphone, if any company is willing to pick up the ball on this.

Posted by tu_face on Sep-15-2004 08:55:

all it would require would be to use anodised aluminium as opposed to plastic on the headband. not very expensive, and certainly won't last forever.. but maybe more than a chuffing year.

i can see what you are saying in business terms that making them so they break after 6 months - 1 year means they will sell more. but how can this work when they give out 2 year warranties on the things (sennheiser)?? surely if they give a 2 year warranty, they should expect them to work for 2 damn years... as a manufacturer i would.

Posted by roosh on Sep-15-2004 15:51:

I just got the call that my HDJ-1000's are in. Hope they don't break after a month.
