80 percent of Texans want ban on assault weapons renewed

Majority also back law allowing concealed guns with permit, poll says

11:36 PM CDT on Thursday, September 9, 2004

By ROBERT T. GARRETT / The Dallas Morning News

AUSTIN Four out of five Texans think Congress should renew the ban on assault weapons that expires Monday, according to a new Texas Poll. The law bars sale of 19 kinds of semiautomatic weapons that have features of guns used by the military and it outlaws ammunition clips of more than 10 rounds.

The Texas Poll found that 53 percent of adults surveyed own a gun or live in a household in which someone else does. Sixty-one percent favor the law allowing Texans to carry concealed handguns with a permit.

Six times since 1988, the Texas Poll has asked whether restrictions on gun sales should be increased, decreased or kept the same. In the latest survey, 44 percent favored keeping restrictions unchanged, the first time that sentiment exceeded support for increasing restrictions (42 percent this survey).

Gun control adversaries Jim Dark, executive director of the Texas State Rifle Association, and Dave Smith of Houston, president of Texans for Gun Safety, agreed that satisfaction with current restrictions is rising. Both said there is a broad acceptance of instant background checks of gun buyers.
(snip/...)

I'm cool with CCW permits, but I think we need to crack down on felons who acquire guns illegally.

I miss the M4 I had in the Marines

you kinda need one or somethign similar since where Im from, 1 outta 10 thugs that live off of Antoine carry AKs or Mac 10s like they ever gave a damn about the law

Posted by D Dubya on Sep-11-2004 16:22:

Those are the most fudged statistics I have ever seen. Texas, in general, would be one of the states strongly against the renewing of the ban. I might be able to believe Austin because of their liberal viewpoints, but other than that, Texas on a whole is not in support

Posted by DaveSZ on Sep-11-2004 19:57:

Yeah I never trust polls anymore.

I think they are used to manipulate the public by and large.

I am getting my CHL soon. I am tired of criminals being the only ones carrying around guns.

I thought the fight scene in the Last Samurai where the Ninjas came after Katsumoto was killer.

And I have to agree with Digitalbreach, the sword play in Kill Bill sucked balls.

If you want to see some realistic sword fighting, watch the Seventh Samurai.

Posted by daydreamer on Sep-14-2004 21:36:

kill bill.
swordplay, the whole movie was a snore.

hey, do you mean seven samurai by akira kurosawa.

for over the top sworfighting, YING XIONG
pretty much beats anything i have seen.

Posted by Ph03n1x on Sep-14-2004 21:58:

Yeah I meant Seven Samurai.

In reality, samurai sword battles consisted of long periods of standing and scrutinizing each other -- what you might call posing -- and then the actual fight, which lasts for less than a second.

Ive had mine since my 21st bday. After having it a few months it seems a tad overrated, but I can say I feel alot safer with it considering the part of Houston I live in has gone to hell.

silenced ones rock. I'd probably say my all-time favorite was the M4 w/ 203 I was issued while in the Marines.

Of course if you really want to own the neighborhood...

This is the MK19 40mm Machine Gun, MOD 3. Like your other tripod mounted machine guns...except it fires grenades. Put it in the back of a pickup, attach a box of armored piercing, HE rounds to it, and kiss your traffic problems goodbye. Now there aint anyway in hell these would be legalized... but it would be nice

yeah the delayed blowback, closed bolt design by heckler & koch makes it easy to get a tight shot grouping (if you're a good shot), which is why its the close quarters weapon of choice by swat and the special warefare groups.

out of curiousity where'd you get to fire one at? There are ways civillians can own one but you can only use it on the special ranges and the government pretty much keeps tabs on wherever you take it with you.

It'd be nice just to have one to keep under the matress.

Matthias,

He's going to be secretive about firing that weapon, so I'll just go ahead and tell you. He was a Navy Seal - then the whole "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" thing jumped up and bit him.

BUT SERIOUSLY...

Nah, I qualified on one with the FBI. I'm not affiliated to the FBI at all, just had a training session. As far as when or where...I've got to be secretive...
