Sooooo, vinyl is dying...
I've participated in a few threads about the new digital mediums for audio which I'm sure most of you have at least heard about:
DVD-Audio and Super Audio CD. I've even read from ppl that say once dvdjs or whatever players play DVD-A and SACDs, vinyl will get a major blow.
Well it appears DJs are a huge market. Check out these numbers by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for 2003:
Worldwide copies sold in 2003 of
SACDs 1 300 000
DVD-A 400 000
Vinyl LPS 1 500 000
Interesting?!?!
PS of course I won't mention cds
OH, and for those digi-freaks who already wanna say, wait 'till next year, uuuhhhhh, I don't think so. SACDs number is already declining and DVD-As still have plenty to overcome.
vinyl. spelled vinyl.
vinyl will never die.... i hope

Until CDs have the same warm sound quality as vinyl, vinyl will never die.
Until vinyl has the same versatility of the digital, easy to burn CD format, CDs will always have a big place in our record boxes too.
Both are good, both have their advantages and disadvantages. Limiting yourself to either is stupid.
I really hope vinyl doesn't die, they might be large and clumpsy but they're cool.
DJ:ing solely with a tiny laptop and digital files doesn't appeal to me. Turntables is a must!
DVD-A is the future
just go listen to Chrystal Method on dvd-a..
Heh, yeah right. Like DVD-A or SACD is even useable for dj's...
(i guess i can say this in this kind of technical forum)
well, clubland is dying, so vinyl will die

Whoever says vinyl is dying is wrong. I love using vinyl. I bought a couple CD decks now and one of the main things I miss about vinyl is actually touching and being able to literally see the track laid out under the light. It all has its pros and cons, but honestly, I don't think vinyl is going to die anytime soon.
And just for you SACD and DVDA people -- yall have a long road to get to standard.

OMG, word on the street is, vinyl is gonna die soon because of CDs, what ever shall we do.
Vinyl is gonna be around for ALONG time, not for ever, but DJs who want to use vinyl now, will have no problem doin so for the rest of there DJin life.
Only thing that could "possibly" make me switch from vinyl, is some kind of super CD thats 12" in size, and you put upside down on a Super Turntable, and when you drop the tonearm onto it, instead of a needle, its a laser, and the sound quality is te same warm sound as vinyl, but is incoded into 8 channells.
i prefer vinyl anyday....i hope its stays till at least i'm dead!
I have one question, if the vinyl format is/was supposed to die, why has the modern vinyl record been around and used since the 1940's? It's been over six decades and records are still here. I highly doubt they are going to drop off the face of the earth anytime soon. I think the age of the format speaks for itself.

vinylwillalwaysbewithus.
for the records, I'm not against cds (I use digi-shit also). I'm pro vinyl
Interesting that the article where I got the #s from explained how the trend seems to be that eventually cds will commercially die (not completely, but as THE medium of music). Thing is speed at which hard drive players are selling and companies like itunes and shit keep selling via internet download and likes, seems ppl will prefer having everything in harddrives without bulky
cds.
And remember shit mp3s will dissapear. As compression gets better and hard drives smaller and cheaper, you can have your entire catalog in cd quality in a player as big as a wallet.
Of course this comentary is not aimed at djs, but think about it:
CDjs and like do not emulate vinyl (they try)
So, if you are gonna use digital why have many cds when you can have a small hard drive as music bank? for example cd decks which read smart cards - seen them right?
Soooooo, who's dying now
(I'm joking

Nothing beats vinyl. 'nuff said. Problem is though, vinyl hunt is a bitch, that is why people attempt to use alternate methods.
Digital formats are going to keep changing so there want really be a standard that you can use and stay with. Where as vinyl is a well established analogue format that isnt going anywhere, I hope.
vinyls are too bulky, expensive and only 2-3 songs per a single vinyl. Too much hussle for ordinary people.
I really hope they develop something with dvd's or whatever new disc comes around since it can store much better storage and quality. In this day of digital transformation from interner to hdtv some great things will happen with music too.another thing is that future is all digital with longevity being the main issue. I just hope I don't grow old till then and can enjoy it.
