Symbol Hisses on Records

On some records the symbols (e.g. ssssssss) sound really harsh and it sounds like distortion going on.

Why is that? Simpy the way the record was made or is the volume too high? Atleast I don't think it was too high.

Probably the volume. Not to denigrate your equipment, but perhaps your speaker quality isn't up to par?

BTW it's spelled cymbals. Just a minor nit.

Maybe your record is just dirty? I've had those sounds too sometimes, and cleaning the records might just solve the problem.

Usually the problem stems from you playing the records to loud. Are your meter reds in the red?? Try to play every record in the greens. I peronally noticed improved sound qaulity in my sets i nmaking this a good habit to follow.


If this problem is just with this record and everyhting else is fine than you have a badly pressed or worn out record.Soultion : get a new record. But before you give the record to your dog as a toy , first try to clean it very throughly. If it still sounds like crap than use it as a frizbie . I had the some problem a month ago until I just said f#ck it I am getting s new record. Everythings fine now.

Turn the trim down low if you have that on your mixer

Hello again..

I tried toning down the volume, but to no avail, the cymbol hissing continued. I think this is the way the vinyl was recorded. It's a bit annoying, but from the way things look I'll have to just live with it.

I'm trying to figure out why this is happening.. it's probably impossible to fix this problem, because it's physically permanent on the record.

I've downloaded the mp3 vinyl of "Woodshokk - Tulips & Chocolate" and apparently I'm not the only one experiencing the harsh cymbol sound. (yes i downloaded! don't string me up!)

I am also having the same problem with a vinyl I bought yesterday. the hi's seem really harsh. I tried everything. I am thinking that either the song was made like this or its a bad presss.

I ordered another copy so I will find out soon.

But yeah, one of the things I can't stand in terms of audio are harsh highs/hissing. Makes me want to pass out...

In my case , lowering the hi's via the eq detoritates the entire sound. I believe the reason is that its not just the hi frequency but the entire record ( lows,mids, hi) which are producing a sh!tty harsh muffled mid and hi destortion. Lowering the hi's until its no longer harsh creates what I call the "garbage can" effect; the record sounds as if it were produced in a garbage can instead of a studio.Because even though I eliminated the hi feq. the sh!tty sound from the mids and lows is still present.

I'm thinking to buy some more vinyls, I just hope that harsh effect doesn't touch any of them this time!

It could be your brand of needle. I had a couple records like that and when I asked around people suggested I get a different set of needles. I had the Stanton Track Master IIs and switched to the Ortofon Night Clubs and the highs became silky smooth.
