robert miles - children....thoughts

i was at a friends house last night and this song came up in discussion because one person there was downloading ring tones for his phone. i was thinking about this song in general and that a lot of people know it (even ones who dont listen to EDM). when it came out 95 or 96 if i remember correctly, it did get played on the radio a decent amount here (NY).

now what i am wondering is what it was about that song that enabled it to be exposed to mainstream music listeners that just doesnt seem to happen today at all on the radio (unless it's lasgo or something of the sort).

i know the whole discussion about people not wanting EDM to go mainstream because it will ruin the genre, but i think it would be nice if more than a song or two every once in a blue moon got exposure. at the very least i think it would make people a little less ignorant towards this style of music we all appreciate on here.

I guess it just felt more... *real* to people who usually listen to instrumental music. I'm talking about the piano bit.

I put that in on purpose, I knew you would find issue with that.

Robert Miles never set out when he created the song to go mainstream, it was the music that he felt. It turned out to be such a success in all versions that it made Miles so much money, that he can effectively do what he wants in terms of music and he can spend more time in creating his music. I heard that it made him like 4 million in royalties.

i think that robert miles - children is really mediocre. nothing special but i dont hate it

Posted by GrimReaper on Sep-20-2004 00:37:

Oh well. Children was and still is amazing and hopefully it can be put to rest now without any more remixes or remakes.. there's def. no need for them at this point, already more than enough crappy efforts floating around!

Miles has gone far away from the commercial dance/trance scene anyway.. his Organik album and it's remix version were pretty far from where his fans got used to with his first 2 albums. Very experimental sounds and elements were introduced on Organik, lots of ethnic and global instruments. The result was too experimental even for my liking and i like of many styles and genres.. even some weird ones.

agreed. just grab hold of the many ministry compilation cds out there.

individual tracks such as:

motorcycle - as the rush comes in
tiesto & bt - love comes again
agnelli & nelson - holding onto nothing

and more (even dj sammy's tracks, like it or not, are popular due to the trance elements)...

all have been commercial chart successes.

if you're referring to a strictly instrumental production.. hmm...

Thumbs up

I love the song.

I sleep to it every night, among 100 other tracks on the "sleep mix" lol

but anywayz, I just like the feeling it gives me...and oddly enough some one said the video of it was some one lookin out a car...

First time i heard it i was high as hell, looking out of a car and thinkin how great life was (good song + high= life being good)

i always look back on that moment and it makes me happy.

the song is cool.....a quality song that brings great memories.

in what markets? europe? uk? miami? nyc? that may be, but i guess that trance is hardly commercial in the vast majority of markets. say 95% or so. anytime that it gets out there (whether anyone respects it as trance) in these areas is good.

Robert Miles (real name: Roberto Concina) is great!!! He now makes totally different musik from previous years. Children definitely is one of my favourites. Read this:

''"Children" was inspired by a collection of photos taken by Miles' father while stationed in war-torn Yugoslavia; the DJ was equally disturbed by the growing number of deaths plaguing the Italian rave community, and he soon began work on "Children," a simple, piano-driven instrumental anthem produced at a cost of only 150''

i dont know where u get that figure from but if somethings produced in the mainstream and to make money then its commercial and that describes what most trance is

I got the Robert Miles CD (I think it was called Dreamland) several years ago. I don't think his music can be called trance, but it sure is pretty relaxing.

yes but you have to remember mate. that this tune is like 8 or so years old.. and not only that, its not trying to be a trance tune of todays standards... A] because todays standards were not yet set.. and also B] cos robert miles considered his style as dream trance... a genre i think he created and pulled off very well indeed... see Fable for examples

personally, i think children did its purpose... got recognised for its true innovativaty [word?] , showed that there is thought in electronic music [which was less appreciated back then], and showed that just cos it has a 4/4 dance beat it dosnt mean that it cant be intelligent, which is one major thing i found people misunderstood back then.
