Jumping Volume in Windows XP

My volume of mp3's ( and songs in sequencers ) goes up and down like a jumping kangaroo. What do I need to do to fix this problem?

Update your sound card drivers.

Take your hand off the volume control knob?

A. Update Sound Card Drivers
B. Get a New card
C. GET A MAC

I use the latest drivers for my soundcard and Windows XP is also up to date. This problem started a week ago ( no problems during the previous couple of months ). My virus scanner didn't pick up any virusses.

I think I'll format this PC and reinstall everything again.

Is your virus scanner up to date? Is it a decent one? You must have installed something or changed some setting to make that happen if it isn't a virus and you have the latest drivers. Or maybe the problem is with the latest drivers and you need to go back a version.

Or maybe you should take your hand off the volume control knob

Hmm, a thought...

Have you checked all your wires etc.? Maybe one of them is loose?

Do you have a connection to the internet all the time without a decent firewall? Via spyware/bots there are some things which pop up and/or mess with your master volume (or do other annoying things) Had this few weeks ago.

Fortunately there are free spyware killers to disable and avoid these things, if this is the case for you as well.

Thanks for the tips everybody. The problem was the drivers of my logitech keyboard.

Hi guys,

Saw this post, and since I have a comparable problem I thought it would be better to ask the question here instead of opening a new topic.

So this is what's wrong:

When i'm using Reason, I (like most people) layer different kicks over each other, and percussion, so that a kick contains let's say 8 different samples. The problem is, when I playback the audio in Reason, the first kick is of a much higher volume then the rest. This also occurs when I remove a couple of kicks out of a row. I tried to make it more clearly below, where "B" is the high volume kick and "b" the normal ones:

Playback in sequencer:

B-b-b-b-b... and so on.

Same when there's a gap in a line of kicks:

b-b-b-b-.-.B-b-b-b

I checked every posible setting in Reason, every velocity bar etc etc. It just seems like my soundcard is causing this or something. It's a simple Creative SB Live card. Anyone able to help me? It's really pissing me off...

Thanks in advance!

have u checked if the "Redrum" is running together with the drums? check if the "RUN" button on Redrum is flashing.. untap "enable pattern selection" and "pattern" as well... I think that is what the problem is... kind regards from a non-Reason user

I get that when I have my compressor settings wrong.

Hi,

Thanks for the reactions. I've checked out all the redrum settings and patterns to see if there was a "double" hit somewhere, but this wasn't the case.

@ Mr.Mystery:

What changes you make to the compression when this problem occurs? Because i've been tweaking the compressors from all 3 kicks individually, and also the compressor that compresses the layered kick. It does seem to have some effect, but it still occurs.

When I was checking out the compressors of the different kicks while playing the track, I saw that the gain of the compressor of the third kick raised to the maximum. It raises to like +36 when there is a break in the kicks. And then when the kick comes again it slowly goes down to 0, so I think this might be it? Still, when i'm tweaking this I can stop it from raising to +36, but then it sounds so weak...

EDIT:

Seems to have it fixed now. I checked on al the gain meters of the compression and I think it was the ratio causing this. I tweaked them all so that none of them came above +12 and it worked. Thanks @ MrMystery. =)

type this in run

msconfig

then proceed to IRQ

Check your sound card, is it shared with any other numbers?
If so, physically remove the card and move in to the 2nd from the bottom slot on your motherboard, this slot normally has its own ICQ.

If it has it's own number, disregard.

Second, check your Latency in your logic or whatever. Make sure its like 128 or 256 and not 16 lol.

I have windows xp pro and run cubase sx2 with ZERO probelms. I have all the services, just minor cleaning up. Unless I have an insane project, I can check email, edit on photoshop and CUBASE is SOLID. Cubase never crashes, I don't know mac's are just a rip off, just like Pro Tools.

It is not nessary, just like a S500 Benz is not nessary, and VW Jetta is totally good enough. All a mac is about is status, image.

What happens when a Mac Harddrive goes bad, of wait you can actually buy those. No Chip upgrades, or anything just buy the next box because You are Mentally Incompetent! Come on your a total nerd Programming music, why can't you do the basic building of a computer and install the software. I guess if you have the extra 1-2K to blow ok man.

I have a ULTRA pimp rig for like $1,400 USD. Sound card, 1gig of memeroy, 2.4ghz, and 2 120 gig drives, I also have dual moniter card and dual moniters. Free moniters and a $50 card makes dual moniter setup vs. the $2,000 cinima display that apple makes.

But hey I also built my desk because I don't have $5000 to blow on a really nice desk.
