Yankee vs Boston - AL Predictions!!!

Is it easy for me to start calling Boston out saying Boston sucks blah blah blah or make a thread sayins "Oh we beat the shit out of Boston"

duely noted:
http://www.tranceaddict.com/forums/...t=Yankee+Boston

And it is so obvious how you Boston Fans have this chip on your shoulders about Yankee Fans. Why is it that Boston fans have a problem with Yankee Fans wearing their team's logo IN Boston and when you guys come here you occupy a decent amount of seats, are obnoxiously loud about your team and at the same rate, do not receive the same scrutiny as we do at your home town. Ok well this point has been beated to death. IMHO - Boston people are way too obnoxious..

Ok, now for the real topic of discussion...

I believe Boston is playing their game the right way. The Twins are leading the AL West and are clearly dominating. If I were the Yankee's, I'd love to slide into the Wild Card slot and play Oakland in the first round and let Boston play the Twins.

From the Yankee standpoint, letting Boston and the Twins battle it out would make for a better series since we will go up against Oakland in the first round. Personally I'd like to see Boston and Twins duke it out and have us root for Boston since Min is so strong. Hopefully making haste of Oakland and playing Boston for the AL Title.

Even though I'm a huge yankee fan and will be rooting for them forever, i have this feeling the world series will be

Minnesota vs St. Louis
Minnesota in 6 my prediction...

if the yankee's make the world series..
Yankees vs St. Louis
Yankees in 7

bryan...you meant to say that the twins lead the AL Central...

anyway, i love to see the yanks and the cards in the series...two of the most winningest franchises in baseball history head-to-head...besides, those two lineups together in one game is such a wet dream to me....

Posted by RichieRich on Sep-20-2004 16:49:

boy it was a real treat to watch the yankees trash the red sox over the weekend. specially that punk varitek going 0-10 for the series and pedro getting clobbered on the mound. i couldnt have asked for a better outcome. i also watched timlin try to start trouble again by throwing at 2 consecutive hitters. boston is just plain weak.

Posted by EarnYourKeep on Sep-20-2004 18:50:

you're right it's monday morning i blame it on dunkin donuts! haha
Oakland is coming out of the AL West and Minnesota leading the AL Central.

I'd love to watch Minnesota and Boston go at it

As for Varitek, I'm almost positive he is hurt somehow, did you see his cuts at the ball? either that or he feels that nonchalant swings are the way to go....tek usually eats up NY ballpen so I dunno...

If you think the Twins will be harder to beat in a 7 game series than the Red Sox will be, you're crazy. Sure... the Twins are guaranteed to win at least 2 games because of Johan Santana (left handed Pedro... Pedro even said it himself). Other than that, Radke is pretty good too, but past those two guys... they have nothing. The Red Sox are definitely the best team in the AL (and I'm not just saying that for whatever reason). Add Wakefield (who the Yankees can't hit) to Pedro and Schilling... plus Lowe has been pretty good since the trades. Orlando Cabrera is starting to look like a Yankee killer (thank god, he always killed the Mets). However, I do think the Yankees will win the division with the Sox for the WC. But the point is that the Twins would definitely be easier than the Red Sox. But, I still think that any of the AL teams could make it to the series. All three of the other teams have proved they can beat the Yankees this year. Plus, when Orlando Hernandez is your ace, that's really bad... (Granted, he's been wicked this year)

Posted by BitchBoyNYC on Sep-20-2004 21:32:

I'm a huge Yankee fan, but I think this race is far from over. I believe that Boston will take the next series from the Yanks 2-1. I think the more important series for Boston is against Baltimore. If they split or drop the series, they'll be in a world of trouble. Yanks got 3 vs Toronto, 3 vs Boston, 3 vs Min, and 3 vs Toronto left.
Boston's got 4 vs Baltimore, 3 vs the Yanks, 3 vs TB and then 4 vs Baltimore w/ a double header on 10/2.

It's gonna be a tight race in the East.

My predicts: Yanks take division, Boston takes WC

Yanks vs Boston in Al championship: Yanks in 7

Yanks vs Cards in WS. Cards in 5

Posted by AY STAR on Sep-20-2004 22:12:

yanks will win the division
and my prediction is if the yanks can beat oakland in the first round and they play as well as they did this weekend then it will be a good seris but yanks will win in 5
as for the nl its gonna be dodgers or the cards
and if its the cards i think they will beat the yanks but if its the dodgers it will be a good seris and yanks should win in 6

dodgers took 2 out of 3 from yankees in july i believe?

Posted by EarnYourKeep on Sep-20-2004 23:00:

good discussion going on here. i like the idea that the cards will give the yanks a run for their money and probably even take it from us in the WS. if the dodgers make it to the WS, then I have a good feeling the yanks can take it from them despite dropping 2 of 3 earlier this season.

Above all else, i think Minnesota vs St. Louis would make a nice WS.
Who knows, its baseball in the fall lets see how it plays out.

go yankees. why? cause im not a local, so i don't give a fuck. and yes dude red sox = monster chip - all they ever do is cause problems around here, and there fans show the world there bitterness time and time again.... e.g. Storrow Dr. saying "Reverse Curve" is repeatedly changed to "reverse the curse"

Posted by pvd420 on Sep-21-2004 02:04:

I'm not a boston fan. but come on, any team that has gone that long without winning anything would have bitter fans....the rangers went 54 years without a stanley cup and people around here had to listen to all their whiny fans for quite a while. It's perfectly normal.

im sure the cubs fans are bitter too (probably not as bad as sox fans though) for the same reason.

I'm a firm believer in that once the playoffs begin, anything can and will happen (ie: Marlins, Angels, D-Backs). Here's a breakdown of the pitchers and players you should be scared of:

NL
Dodgers
Jeff Weaver (yes... THAT Jeff Weaver. He's been a hell of a lot better than Brown)
Odalis Perez
Brad Penny (back from the DL... he was dope last year in the playoffs)
Eric Gagne
Yhency Brazoban (came over in the Kevin Brown trade)
Adrien Beltre (in a Bondsless world, he'd be MVP)
Jayson Werth
Steve Finley
Milton Bradley

Cardinals
Ummm... they have NO pitcher that scares me. Not one... even in the bullpen. However...
Albert Pujols (best player not named Bonds... )
Scott Rolen (until a-rod proves me wrong, best 3B in baseball)
Jim Edmonds (most underrated of the three)
Edgar Renteria
Larry Walker

Braves
Jaret Wright
John Smoltz
J.D. Drew
Chipper Jones
Johnny Estrada (who? ... exactly)
Andruw Jones

Cubs
(I think you all forgot about them in your predictions for the NL. Everyone says the Cardinals because of their record, but... LOOK)
Mark Prior
Kerry Wood
Matt Clement
Carlos Zambrano (mega underrated)
Greg Maddux
Aramis Ramirez
Moises Alou
Sammy Sosa (still Sammy...)
Derek Lee
Nomar Garciaparra

AL
Athletics
(You know the drill)
Tim Hudson
Mark Mulder
Barry Zitto
Rich Harden
Octavio Dotel
Eric Chavez
Erubiel Durazo
Eric Byrnes

Twins
Johan Santana (the scariest pitcher in the playoffs)
Brad Radke
Joe Nathan
Lew Ford
Justin Morneau

Yankees
Orlando Hernandez
Tom Gordon
Mariano Rivera (but if it comes down to the Red Sox, he isn't as invincible as he usually is)
Derek Jeter
Alex Rodriguez (though he still hasn't done much to prove he can handle big game pressure)
Gary Sheffield
Hideki Matsui

Red Sox
Pedro Martinez
Curt Schilling
Keith Foulke
Manny Ramirez
David Ortiz
Trot Nixon
Orlando Cabrera (call me crazy... or biased [he's been my favorite SS for like 5 years], but i think he's poised to have a great post season)

Those are the favorites. I'll just do the Astros and Giants, just in case... cause baseball is wacky and wackier things have happened.

Astros
Roger Clemens (still doin' it)
Roy Oswalt
Brad Lidge
Lance Berkman
Jeff Bagwell
Carlos Beltran (say hi to your new CF, Yankee fans)

Giants
Jason Schmidt
AJ Pierzynski
JT Snow
Barry Bonds (who? he's had the best season in baseball history, yet no one seems to care as much as they should. and every year he makes more of a case that he is the greatest hitter of all time)

Well, there ya have it folks. Shamus' Guide to the 2004 Post Season. Hope you recognize some of the more obscure names when you're watching this year.

Finishing in 2nd place for 6 straight years and knowing very well that it's soon a 7th would make one bitter. Not winning a championship while your hated rival has won 26 during that time has to make one bitter. Finishing thisclose to beating the Yankees in the playoffs last year makes one bitter. I always say once Boston wins a championship, win 25 more then we'll start talking. It's a mentality of second rate that permeates the fans/team because they are always enjoying 2nd place. It's more comfortable to not have the pressure of always being a winner.

About the playoffs, it's always about pitching, pitching, and more pitching. Look at last year with Beckett/Pavano and with Arizona with RJ/Schilling. The Yanks this year have to hope for a winning combo of El Duque and Mussina who seems to have refound his skills once his arm is healthy. Let's hope that since he's been injured a good part of the year that he's more rested for the stretch. It's also about the bullpen and lately Paul Quantrill has been absolutely horrendous. That bridge to Gordon/Rivera scares me.

It seems with Oakland and Minnesota that they freeze a little bit during the playoffs. They don't seem to go for the jugular and lack that Derek Jeter quality to come up with that one big play when it's needed. I would be surprised if it doesn't come down to Boston/NY again.

The one thing about Pedro is that it's beginning to look as though the Yankees have him figured out. They tended to in the past to just wear him down and get a couple in the late innings a la Game 7 LY but now they are attacking more. I think the Yankees, with A-Rod and Sheffield, are better suited to face Boston's pitching than LY. Plus other good power pitchers don't dominate them as much anymore because both of those guys thrive on fastballs.

Boston and 2nd place. It's like Christmas.. it happens every year.

Posted by Shamez214 on Sep-21-2004 19:58:

It's just bad luck on Boston's part. They have had better teams then the Yankees (this year being one of them), but they just can't seem to translate it into victories. Also... are you just completely ignoring the 80's and early 90's when the Yankees sucked and did not finish in first place? Seems all Yankee fans only talk about '96 and forward. I can't wait till the Devil Rays realize their potential and start owning the Sox and Yankees and win the division. You heard it here first...

Rocco Baldelli
Carl Crawford
BJ Upton
Delmon Young
Scott Kazmir
Jeff Neimann...

They're going to be scary in a year or two...

the thing about prospected talent is dependant upon the "gel" of a team to make the talent be known. there have been sooo many prospected talents that have made it only so far and have only gotten their name recognized so much(tim salmon, kerry wood, more i just cant think of right now) that have only succeed so far but haven't had the nucleus/gel of a fortified team to actually rise above and stick out. Granted Pujols is doing it, jeter did it, a-rod did it, griffey did it etc these players all succeed to beyond prospect level and became defined players. Everyone in the world "could be" a good player, but what would a prospect do on a team that doesn't know how to play together.

i remember someone saying how the yankee's farm camp has no one in its future prospects to look at. but what they do have is a solid nucleus of players/veterans who sort of lead/inspire the team. when you play with a solid group of players, it makes that "average" joe step up his game to play along side these guys. thats what the yankees have thrived on. cmon, Jim Leyrics, Boone, Soriano, Spencer, all moved onto other average teams where their average talent doesn't shine like it did with the yankees. yes the yankees payroll is higher than anyone ever could imagine, yes its about buying players, but buying the right players who play well together is just as important as having a rotation of all RJs.

I seriously frown upon people who despise the yankees simply because their payroll is too high. its like hating the rich people. i admit there are some untasteful decisions steinz makes and his attitude isnt the most publicly acceptable, but he's doing something right. If it was true that all he did was buy players, then its like 10 jose canseco's who dont know how to play together....get my drift?

point being, farmed players, prospects are all intended to prove themselves when they come into the MLB. And its up to them to do so, but coming into a team with a bunch of players who dont know how to play together, is moot. same way for having a whole bunch of great players who dont know how to play together...doesn't do much.

Scary enough to surpass NY? I don't think so. If they take those young guys and add a some key veterans though trades/free agency then it's possible but not at a 23 million dollar payroll. You can do it like Oakland/Minnesota but even they have some key signings. Oakland keeps their big pitchers intact along with Eric Chavez. Even listen to Lou Piniella who sees the potential but knows they will have to spend more money to add some key veteran pieces. Not just that but to retain some of those guys from eventually jetting to the Yankees via free agency.

Bad luck? That sounds like a Boston argument. They "may" have better players but the best team comes out in the end. We're talking about a 162 game schedule, the luck (bad calls or whatever you want to say) evens out. I don't agree that being 4 1/2 games out at this time of the year says that Boston has had worse luck and that they are the better team. How about having Kevin Brown, Jason Giambi, Mike Mussina on the disabled list for most of the year. You can call that bad luck.

Ignoring the 80's? Did Boston ever win a championship in the 80's/90's. I remember those Yankee teams and they won 97 games one year (I think 1987 to Toronto) but finished in 2nd place. There wasn't a wild card back then. 1994 the Yankees would have finished in first too but the lockout happened. Having Dave Winfield, Rickey Henderson, Don Mattingly, etc. didn't suck. What sucked was having Dave LaPoint, Andy Hawkins, Pasqual Perez as your starters.

Posted by Shamez214 on Sep-21-2004 22:15:

According to most Baseball Prospectus stats, Boston is the better team this year. The most basic of which is Runs Allowed and Runs scored in which Boston is worse then their record should be and the Yankees are better than their record should be.

As for Brian... The Yankees do have no prospects. And that IS a big deal. Mariano, Posada, Jeter, Williams, Pettitte, and Soriano were all home grown Yankee players. 4 of those guys are still the core of this team. And they are only getting older. Their farm is filled with overhyped prospects such as Dioner Navarro and Robinson Cano. Looking at their stats this year, they are terrible. Until George realizes what he's doing, your team is going to be exactly what you said... 10 Jose Canseco's. I dunno... maybe I'm crazy and I'm the only one that doesn't like a team filled with superstar Free Agents and huge trades... but I do know that this Yankee team is a far cry from the '96 - '00 team. Those teams were filled with young superstars and then puzzle pieces that melded together. This team looks NOTHING like that...

when it comes to boston redsox n yankees and who will win if they do play i am gonna say boston cuz i live in boston ... hehehe ... but no for serious argument you have to say damn these yankees they r very good and they always seem to win so i wouldnt be suprised if they pull out one more game 7 out of their ass and beat the soxs .... another nightmare for redsox nation .... i guess we can say and have our prediction as much as we want but well just have to wait and hope and see .... three game series in boston coming up should be good

GO REDSOX

going back to the point made about why boston fans (and non yankee fans) hate the yankees so much is that a good portion of the NY fans make the die hard fans look bad. there are way too many retards that dont know shit about the time period when the yankees didnt win any championships, and then all of a sudden fans come out of the woodwork after 1996. the same thing happened with the lakers. it's just plain annoying to see.

what also bothers me is the yankee fans i saw literally crying after they lost in 2002 to the Angels. I mean hello....your team just won 4 championships in the last 6 years. why not appreciate what your team has just done instead of crying over not winning every year. try going as long as the cubs and sox fans have without a world series victory and then maybe you would appreciate the recent victories that you have been alive to witness.

again it's not all yankee fans, just the ones that have jumped on the bandwagon in recent times....

Posted by Shamez214 on Sep-22-2004 01:13:

i know plenty of yankees fans that hate boston just as much... especially the players. most yankees fans despise manny ramirez, david ortiz, pedro martinez, jason varitek, etc. and the excuse that "they always kill the yankees" is so stupid. i mean, chipper jones is .370, 50 homers and something like 200 rbi in his career against the mets (and that he hasn't even played a full 162 games against us yet... that's a hell of a season) and i dont hate him. i just never understood yankee or red sox fans. both sides think the other teams fans are worse and argue over who has the worse fans. i've been to yankee stadium. and i know that i would not be caught dead wearing a red sox cap there, especially if the sox weren't playing. i've also been to boston (and it may have been a quiet night), but i saw a few guys wearing yankees shirts walking around, drunk, and no one was saying anything to them aside from a few hearty heckles. i just think both teams fans are stupid (in general, not all) and really need to relax about it.

I've been a Yankee fan since 1983 when I first could remember anything. I am not even from New York, I was raised in Oregon but my dad loved them and passed it on to me. Being a fan that long put me through the many 2nd place finishes of the 80's and even the worst record in the majors in 1990 (I remember when Andy Hawkins pitched a no-hitter but they committed 4 errors and lost). 1995 was the only time that I really felt a loss when the Mariners beat them and it was Don Mattingly's last game (why I hate the Mariners as much as Boston). 1996 was awesome and will always be the most special since now if the Yankees do win, it's like "of course, look at that payroll... they are expected to win."

Not growing up in New York makes me different because I never developed any hatred to Boston except for the fact that they are the Yankees rivals. For me, it's just good natured ribbing but not the vicious stuff that goes on at the stadium, etc. People in NYC are more vicious in general anyway!! Crying for losing to Anaheim? That's pathetic.

As a fan, it's always more satisfying to rise from the depths and secure a championship. My favorite football team is the St. Louis Rams and before they won the 1999 Super Bowl, they had lost the most games of the entire decade. The "LA Lambs" really sucked ass! But when they won.... wow... that was sweet.
