It's a bid - it hasn't gone through (as of yet) but is endorsed by Microcell's board of directors.

Good for Rogers
Good for Microcell

Not so good for consumers.

It effects service quality, if anyone here is with Rogers, you know what I am talking about... it will push back numbers portability by another couple of years. Microcell was giving Rogers and all the others a really hard time. Too bad they are out of of the market.

Uh oh....don't tell Emz.

I remember when I was younger and didn't have credit or anything, and none of the bigger providers would give me a cell phone, except Fido.
One less competitor on the market, usually not the best news for consumers.
I guess will have to wait and see what happens.

exactly man .. Fido has always come up with more innovative services and a much more competitive pricing plan that its competitors. as the smallest carrier it has the least amount of capital to invest in its network. if only it had more money or if the CDN government allowed greater foreign ownership in the telcos Fido would seriously give the bigger 3 a run for their money..

some of you Rogers and Telus users might be rejoicing by this news.. but in the end IMHO i think it'll just be bad for everyone..

Clearnet was schooling everybody (fido, rogers and telus, Bell didnt exist out west then)
and then Telus bought them.

yeah clearnet was the fiercest back in the days... my first cell was with them.

was clearnet based in montreal too?

Wasn't FIDO piggybacking off of the Roger's network anyways?

no not really.. there are parts of the GSM spectrum that only FIDO can use and parts that only Rogers can ..

Nah as a Rogers user (God bless underground employee discounts ), I see this as a bad turn of events. Competition = good. If the buyout happens, there will be less of a reason for Rogers to give me better service.

I dont know where clearnet was based. I think it was out West(Vanouver?) because they started out west and moved east

at least thats what I remember, but my memory could be off.

wireless in canada is quite expensive imo (esp that you have to pay for INCOMMING calls sucks BIG TIME!)

yep... incoming calls are a bitch.

i'm with TELUS right now. I was thinking of going to FIDO for the 45.00/month unlimited outbound/inbound calls.

also with TELUS it is not GSM which sux for me.

what should I do?

And yeah St_Andrew...here in Canada at some point we used to have the biggest penetration of wireless...and then we lost it and European/Asian markets are now much further ahead of us...same thing is sort of happening with the internet now as well...(sorry I just totally ripped that off a class I just had)

imo switch to FIDO asap before they remove that unlimited plan.

when Rogers will take over they'll have to keep the existing plans for those already subscribed.

This makes me very sad...I like my fido.

The other two providers are both bastards

Much diff than asia and europe.

Like Malek said, I wouldn't expect rates to get any better when Rogers gets the nod.

PS. My bill still says Microcell and I hope it stays that way.

Fido has it's own network..But they have roaming agreements with rogers in areas where they don't have their own infrastructure

For whomever is upset about this:

Be glad this merger is taking place. Your roaming agreements just expanded 10 fold. Your technology and phone features just did the same.

IMO this is the best thing to happen to the cellular/mobile business in North America, ever.

From a technology perspective - you should all be very pleased.

/me is going to have to go and buy the new Blackberry when it comes out in November as a result of this merger.

Bell and Telus are now going to have to work their arses off to roll out 3G services to compete with the GPRS systems that Rogers/Fido have.

Giddy-up! Competition rocks!
