Smoking

note: This thread refers to tobacco.

Basically, who does it, who doesnt? What brand do you smoke? Ever tried to start? Ever tried to quit? Do you smoke to relieve stress, improve cognitive memory, lessen the effects of psychosis? Do you not smoke because of job restrictions, for healthier lungs, for pregnancy reasons? For quitters, which is the best way out, the patch? cold turkey? For starters, whats the best introduction to nictoine: cigarettes, cigars, pipe tobacco? Ever tried dip, snuff, or other smokeless tobacco? Ever tried Eclipse brand cigarettes, the new type that vaporize tobacco to produce a "healthier" smoke?

Im a big on and off smoker with long periods of both, though Ive noticed my on periods have been getting longer. Im currently not smoking (about 12-14 days), and the urge for a cigarette has been growing and growing lately, but Ive done ok so far. Antithetical to most people, I found the first few days quite easy and about 5-6 days into it was when I really started to crave. Im gonna try to hold off at least 6 months, which is approximately the time I smoked consistantly before this most recent quitting session, but the outlook isnt so good right now. I smoked Newports nearly always. Most other cigarettes taste bad to me in comparison. .

I'm a none, think it's a smelly and disgusting habit, but moreso saw a close relative have a throat cancer scare from it, and that just put me right off it anyway

Posted by UglyDave on Sep-21-2004 15:27:

smoke like a fecker if i'm winged.

took 2 last nite, but then on my way home someone asked if i had any smokes so i gave them the whole box

i'm such a nice guy..

I don't think I've smoked a cigarette since grade 8. Never enjoyed it, so never got hooked on it.
At the present time, I'll smoke a good cigar maybe once or twice a year if the occasion happens to present itself.

Marlboro Lights here, slowly trying to stop, but its hard beacause i'm such a social smoker, and i just started at a new college. I smoke abt 4 a day now. My next attemt to quit will probably be around the 16th of october. Most recent attempt failed to intense stress caused by personal problems....bleh..

today is day 1 of my new cigarette free life. Kinda sucks because I already want one. Boo.

Why am I quitting? I just don't want to smoke anymore, and I've decided now is the time.

EDIT:
I smoked Marlboro Lights Menthol. I think you asked what kind of cigs we smoked.

i've never smoke a cigarette...i've tried smoking weed...smoked cigar on poker night...but that's it...i don't usually do that kinda stuff...just seems stupid

Being as how there are no benefits and many disadvantages to smoking, I would have to have the IQ of a sponge to start.

Posted by Slylee on Sep-21-2004 16:17:

when i was a chronic pot smoker about 2 years ago, i used to crave cigs after i got stoned, so i was pretty much a chronic smoker too..yuck.

thank god i quit. i never was really addicted to the actual nicotine though...i always did it out of boredom rather. when i get all dressed up nice and i'm smelling nice, and i go to a bar and someone lights up next to me, i get annoyed. it smells horrible and it's just so nasty.

Posted by Trance Effect on Sep-21-2004 16:18:

Newports here, and you know I'll like to quit, i started smoking about 2 years ago only when i was drinking but it turned into a bad habit, and right now a box last me about 3 days wich i consider normal cause i know some buddies that smoke about 2 boxes a day.

I cant do sports like I used to.

I feel slow and every 3 months i get like real sick .

Unfortunaly, that is wrong. It is not necessarily the nicotine in ciggarettes that is the worst for you, but rather the additives like tar, which make the ciggarettes more toxic and more addictive.

Nictoine has been shown to both suppress the effects of psychosis as well as have give a slight improvement on cognitive memory. Dont be suprised to see smoking snuffed out, yet companies like Phillip Morris survive by producing and distributing nicotine in a newer, more medicinal form, and with probably a new name...

I used to smoke 1-2 packs a day. Smoked Kool Milds...hated non menthol cigarettes. Both me and my wife quit when we found out she was pregnant a little over a year ago. Neither of us like being around cigarette smoke at all now.

Yeah, tar. Plus the carcinogens, the rat poison, etc, etc. And the money wasted that could be spent on something that doesn't degenerate my health.

Familiar Chemicals in Cigarettes:
Chemical
Found in

carbon monoxide
car exhaust

nicotine
bug sprays

tar
material to make roads

arsenic
rat poison

ammonia
cleaning products

hydrogen cyanide
gas chamber poison

cyanide
deadly poison

acetone
nail polish remover

butane
cigarette lighter fluid

DDT
insecticides

formaldehyde
to preserve dead bodies

sulfuric acid
car batteries

cadmium
used to recharge batteries

freon
damages earth's ozone layer

geranic acid
a fragrance

methoprene
a pesticide

maltitol
a sweetener not permitted to be used in foods in the U.S.

There are more than 4,000 chemicals in cigarette smoke, including 43 known cancer-causing (carcinogenic) compounds and 400 other toxins. So you see, it's much more than just tar, friend. Cigarretes are so toxic that if someone ate a pack they would die.

So? What does that have to do with me not smoking a pack of Joe Camel's? Nicotine supresses psychosis and improves memory? Do you expect me to start smoking cigarrettes because of this? Smoking cigarretes is good for me? I've got 4,000 reasons that tell me otherwise.

Im not trying to say ciggaretes are great, or even good for you, but you saying that there are no benefits to nicotine are wrong. There are proven health benefits. Unfortunately ciggarette companies made them as addictive as possible with all the additives you listed to get people to continuously buy them (hey, thats capitalism.) Like I said, I dont condone smoking, but there are benefits to nicotine, just like everything. Theres is no black and white.

Edit: Also, I didnt mean to limit myself to tar, but I just assumed it was understood that tobacco companies pack their ciggarettes full of addictive and harmful additives. Tar is a major one.

Yeah, well I never said there were no benefits to nicotine so I don't see what your problem is. And a lot of those chemicals are there for other reasons too, like to keep the cig burning or what-not.

Posted by butterfly on Sep-21-2004 16:55:

i am on and off, more off than on lately. i have made a real conscious effort to not smoke since i have been on birth control but i do still occasionally. i'll smoke both menthols and non menthols but if i am smoking consistently i usally stick to non menthols. though i love the taste of newports, which is what i started on...

One benefit. You've sure shown me. I'll have lung cancer, but at least i'll be able to remember where I left my keys.

I don't know what people like about smoking, to me it's unpleasant and pointless. I don't care of someone wants to do it, but I don't think I'll ever understand why.
