Car stereos and manhood

It all started when someone had the great idea of listening to music while driving. Being in a car can be quite boring or lonely, after all, so a little music could cheer the driver up.
Like everything else, as time passed by, car stereos became modern - instead of 6 songs it can now play 6 day long compilations, still being a small device near the panel. And, they became more powerful. In the post-modern era we live in, things are not as powerful/expensive/helpful as necessary.... they're everything we need AND a lot more, so you can upgrade, brag, or whatever you feel like doing with your ultimate purchase.
This has become ridiculous though. I recall being in the 8th floor of a building and clearly listening to the tune of a car that was passing by (It was "Breathe" by the Prodigy). Even the walls shivered. And I, who was deeply sleeping, woke up, even though it was 2 am.
This is just an example of countless others. It makes me wonder whether the owners of these cars are really listening to the music or if they're in a state of self-affirmation, in which they need to be noticed, so they can show their power. An analogue example would be the birds that claim territory singing - in this case, the male shows his presence by turning up the bass and let everyone hear he's there. If only it would show his manhood so he could mate with all females from surrounding areas, I'd say he was really horny, and I would understand he's got his needs of keeping his genes in the gene pool; but this doesn't seem to be the case in most occasions I've seen it happening. In fact, he'll likely have his hearing impaired in a few months/years and whenever a girl approached, communication would be doomed.
The reason why I'm posting this thread is because I'm trying to work and a selfish bastard is blasting "Black Eyed Peas - Where's the love" nearby (I haven't spotted him yet, although I know he's lurking). If you want to play it loud, fair enough, but for Christ's sake, there are limits. At least close the windows and turn the air conditioner on, so we can all hope acoustic isolation will be enough.
I'd talk about the other annoying things people can do to cars (such as bad tunning and having blinding lights in the front and nothing at all in the rear part, so the car can look like a spaceship that'll abduct whatever crosses its path - countless times I was blinded by a star behind me, when I just wanted to change lanes), but I reckon all people should keep in mind is one little word: respect to others. The rest just comes from it.

I'm an owner of a 1981 Roadstar Cassette player, in case anyone is wondering...

I have a pretty good system with a ten in the back. I like to play it loud when I'm driving, because I enjoy listening and feeling my music. Sometimes I may even enjoy forcing my music on others for a brief moment, but I won't play it loud around apartments and houses at night. I also turn it down when I get near the places I am parking. I don't want to attract too much attention to my car. I have made a lot of modifications to my car, but I intend on making it look fairly plain on the outside. I am not about a bunch of flash. I just want it to perform well and be comfortable. I am going to paint my whole car, but probably a forest green or some other less flashy color. Not SI blue or anything like that.

Eh, I just stuck a portable in there with a tape adapter. It's all the same to me. I figure it's just car, not a club. It's also the music that counts, not the system.

this thread is good for me ..

i take 40 minute commutes back and forth 4 times a day, so i DEFINATELY need a car stereo, or i will fall over the bridge i am crossing and splurge into the lake..

but here's a funny story ..

some dude in a nice shiny 2004 nissan altima was trying to "show off" his new car and his banging stereo .. he was busting a trance tune out loud .. i think it was pvd - kaliedoscope .. not sure .. because that was what i was listening to during that time ..

well, you could hear the scratches and beeps from a regular mp3 when you download it from kazaa!

hahaha .. that was funny
i think his ego got bruised there!
buy the cd damn it!

Smoking ..umm..something

I think the original post was totally opinionated. But then again, there are those losers that jam the music to its limits to attract attention and you can def. tell by the way they constantly look around to make sure someone is looking.

I have a whole sound system (2 12"s, custom box, Alpine Receiver, and aftermarket 6"s and 6x9's) in my car. Definitely not to show off, but being a DJ and a wannabe producer, I prefer to have a more accurate sound. I like being able to hear the low-end and hear basslines than a muddy mess of a factory sound system. Usually the highs and deep low end are somewhat no where to be found in a factory system. Now having subwoofers in my car for years, I dont think I can drive a car where I cant "feel" the bass.

To each his own though...

i can appreciate people wanting a decent stereo in their car...want to get a nice one myself. but there is no point in having a stereo so loud that i cant hear MY stereo. (or hear the television if im at home).

another thing i dont understand is these:

Bass feels good and totally encapsulates you into your own world.

I have a 1400 watt infinity sub and while my car still existed I blasted it. I didnt have to hear road noise, people honking, or any of the plethora of outside noises.

However, residential areas are one of the places you dont do it. If you are in a neighborhood you are nearing the end of your journey anyway and need to rejoin the world

here's the question ..

why do people put subwooofers in their trunks??

where do they stick the dead bodies if there is no room in the trunk?

I got 510w factory installed in my 4x4 Ranger Tremor. You can thump folks when you want to, but I just like the fact I have more sound than you can physically stand in the little pickup truck cab. The friggin floor shakes when I'm not even at half power. My drug addict son put his gansta rap CD in it the other day when I was driving him around and was shocked at the bass power of those songs compared to trance.

Hehe I had a perfect 10...but i didnt have amped MB Quarts so the bass not only covered up road noise, but the speakers - unless it was Radiohead and then it was just great. Never had more than 250 watts tho...|

There's a difference between using and abusing, that's what I'm talking about. Want to listen to music with a louder bass? That's alright as long as the strings don't sound like a plane taking off - no one needs to like the music you do.

Posted by smokeape on Sep-23-2004 02:58:

Going back to orignal question about manhood and car stereo. You do it because you can. That is, annoy other folks with your loud music. You can thump intentionally, which is normally intentional because it's too loud in your own vehicle or just tune it down for your own taste. If it annoys someone else when it's tuned to your own taste, then well I guess f*ck 'em.... I've never seen two thumpers pull up side by side and try to outthump each other although I reckon it happens. Too bad for the bystanders. Lol!!!

Yep, I listen to this shit and you have to hear it because I can thump you!!! HAHHAAAAAA!!!! Love it. Oh yeah, the women love it big time.

Subs make the music so much better, but some people do go overboard with them. Alls you really need is 1 or 2 12s and you're set. I always refrain from blasting mine too if I'm in a nieighborhood or at a stop light.
