tiesto at pure, philadelphia

i was definitely feeling mark pappas's set.

i caught about the last hour of his set. during that span he played

clear blue - elevation
and the first two tracks from sasha's global dj broadcast from june, but not in that order.

(yeah my track IDing sucks)

tiesto was better than he was at avalon in june. i can't compare it to central park summerstage, but i'm sure he played much of the same things.

delerium - silence (tiesto remix), immediately followed by nyana
adagio for strings

he played some really melodic tunes for the first hour, followed it up in the next half hour with some not quite tech trance, then ended the night pretty much with the tracks above.

club pure was packed, but not overly like avalon. it's a really really beautiful venue, and it hands down beats a lot of the clubs that we have in ny at the moment (except maybe crobar). it was pretty much a meat market tonight, so at times i was left to wonder where the female population was. ah well

i finally met erin and liz; you both are beautiful ladies . met amanda also, who stalks these boards and doesn't post. joey, good seeing a familiar NYer in philadelphia. nice meeting u jose! and it was good to see some of my younger friends at penn having a great time at pure.

pictures are coming when i get home

DJ Mark Pappas,
You dropped the fucking bomb ass beats. I thought you destroyed Tiesto tonight... I dont know if it was the fact that when you were playing no guys were hitting on me... seriously though I thought it was total disrespect that Tiesto blew you off in that picture that you took in the dj booth. I thought Tiesto was a total blowhard tonight and basically I paid 35 dollars to see Pappas rip the fucking shit out of the place. Pappas I loved when you dropped Blueberry that was the height of my night I must say. Tiesto was totally not into the place, I dont know if it was because the place was more flaming than my fireplace at Christmas time or he just wasnt feeling a vibe. Anyway I am comparing him to his set in Miami where it was 6 hours long but he was at least INTO the set. I thought he was totally there to play for an hour and a half, then collect his paycheck. Pappas please let me know where you are playing on the weekends because you blew the fucking place up tonight and I think hands down you are the best dj in Philly! By the way, Tiesto's new tracks are absolute garbage... Peace, my 2cents!

Glad to see he went unnoticed...looks like pappas did a good job...bravo mark!!

however, he isnt the best DJ in philly...that distinction defenitely goes to josh wink, and i think pappas himself would agree so, too...

Haha glad to see people appreciated Mark's set... I can ID most the track later, I just woke up. I didnt' even drink last nite... had to keep the guard up if you know what I mean? Pappas dropped a ton of priog bombs last nite... and when Tiesto came on, he continued with the prog for a few tracks, before getting back to his tech and fluffy sound. Will write more later... and Tiesto took plenty of pictures in the "back room" heh.

Tiesto Review at Pure at Philly

Dissapointed in the night...I didn't recognize a single song Tiesto played until an hour after he started. The only tracks I IDed were Just Be, Nyana, Silence, and Adagio for Strings...I took my brother out for his first trance concert and now he probably has a bad impression. The venue was really nice, but I feel I wasted my $35. I got a much better bargin at Nu-NRG a few weeks ago. As for all the gay people there, I didn't really mind them...at least they were friendly. The final DJ was ok, at least he played some great songs like Above and Beyond - No One On Earth and Oceanlab - Sattelite.

This was actually my first Trance party outside of the MD/DC area, so the whole Philly experience was new to me. Having gotten lost it was a bit scary, but I had a friend come along as navigator so it wasn't terribly bad. On top of that, the traffic isn't anything like it is in DC, and the Philly people tend to be less stressed out in general. I actually got free parking cause some dudes just let us have their spot in a paid lot. WOW. Take that DC! I've just finished recovering from the road trip, so now I can finally say a few things about the night.

I'm not really a progressive house/trance kind of guy, so to say that Mark Poppa's set was bangin' is SAYING A LOT. My highlights were when he dropped Blueberry, Xpander and Clear Blue. I never thought I'd ever hear Blueberry at a club, EVER. GREAT JOB Mark!

The only other club I can compare Pure to is Glow in DC. In terms of vibe, courtesy, stress level and pricing Pure wins hands down. My friend and I were in shock when they let us bring in a camera. That would never happen at Glow. On top of that, no stupid bouncers kept us waiting unnecessarily in line (not that there was one), and we weren't searched down as if we were there to blow the place up. I guess part of that has to do with the fact that it is primarily a gay club during the week, but I'll get into that later.

Tiesto never disappoints. That's just a fact of life I've come to accept. His track selection was just off the hook, and his mixing technique clearly demonstrates how he is world class. Just on a side note, he actually came wearing a nice shirt for once. The simple fact that he kept it epic Trance most of the night was in and of itself a gem. Aside from "Silence" (4 years old), it was all friggin' new material. I have to admit I didn't like the way he began and ended his set. Rather than start off with some complete crowd builder he mixed right into Poppa's set, so if you were merely listening you would have a hard time deciphering when Tiesto actually started. After Tiesto was done, and he scratched out of "Adagio for Strings" and simply ended it right there. I think you could tell from the crowd's reaction that they were pleased with his performance. As soon as Tiesto took off, it appears all the straight people went home. That left me and my friend surrounded by a few hot girls and a sea of gay sailors. After having so many guys making out at once and a big black guy try to dance with me, we had to bust out!

I guess my biggest pet peeve of the whole night was the person in charge of lights (I couldn't tell if it was a girl or guy). For 80% of Tiesto's set he/she left the strobe light on continuously. What a HEADACHE!!! I had to leave the dancefloor because I felt like I was going to have some sort of seizure.

Overall, pretty good for a first-time out-of-state experience. I'll try to post pictures later when they are developed.

my fav pic from last night right towards the end of my set..

Posted by Konijn on Sep-26-2004 17:23:

got there around 12:00 so we only caught the last hour of mark's set but like everyone said he was dropping bombs! good shit mark!

tiesto came on @ 1 on the dot and spun till 3:20 -- exactly the same length as last year's set in philly. I saw tijs a few times this week and last night's set was easily the most concise and well put-together. He opened with Starkid - Crayons (Leama & Moor mix) and then went into the typical tracks he's been caning lately. Vibe was good, crowd was friendly, and a good time was had by all of us. Full tl to come later

Thats sooo friggin awesome that Starkid - Crayons is getting the respect it deserves. God bless that kid.

Mark Pappas' set was very good, and i believe its the kosmas epsilon mix of wooden swords.. Tiesto came on with a different song for once..and imo he had the best flow in this set rather then central park bayfront and space... though he played more current hits since he had more time to play them, but his philly one everything came to order.. and to hear silence live again.. priceless! ... though only thing that upset me was in the middle of the set i walked towards the front of the crowd to get a nice pic; he saw me holding up the camera and he smiles and then he turns the gooselamp light right towards me and i couldnt get a decent pic from the light? i thought that was messed up.. i even wore my red tiesto 643 shirt again and he saw what it said. i was right there.. very disappointed about that..

well no more partying till holden for my bday and thats it.

first off, i must say mark pappas is AWESOME!!!!! i went with a group of about 10-12, and i must say more than half liked his set better than tiesto's! mark: you were just totally on point-- dropped some new stuff, along with classics everyone loves to get down to. THANKS FOR XPANDER!!! w00t!!! too bad i didn't get to meet ya

the club itself was pretty cool-- not so massive where it had that annoying Dream-esque quality about it...but it wasn't tiny like sonar or anything. nice size, and i was feeling the room upstairs where we were all chillin the whole night! it was tight how we could hear tiesto in that room too...

tiesto SUCKED in that he only spun for 2.5 hrs, with NO encore?? wtf??? other than that, he was above average, but not great. i still think he was the best when i saw him at nation october 2002. highlights of his set last night were: silence, find, & NEED TO BE LOVED...i'm sure there are others i am forgetting...

sooo good hanging out with ryan (mwah! thanx for letting us stay with you ), liz & whit (my usual girls ), joey (you are such a sweetie and you def know how to tear it up), sal (SOOOO HAPPY TO MEET YOU CUTIE!!!), amanda & john (you guys always start my nights out right), jose (sorry i never came back for that picture!!! ...next time), ian (i almost looked at your wee wee in the bathroom! ) and all the others don't really read the boards...

see ya'll at MIKE!!!!!
