How do I create a Fat power Kick?

How do I achieve something like KICK1 as shown below? Fat, strong and powerful.

I tried using 3 kick together and cut each kick at certain freq to create a new kick and i had compressed it as well but, how come I still cant achieve something like KICK 1? What I did as shown was KICK 2. Its small, short and not powerful enough.

Can someone guide me how to create something like Kick 1 as like I tried using 3 kick together but the result was like sh*t. Appreciate it alot for those helping me. Thanks a million.. I tried alot of ways but still it will never work out as wat it is..

Heres the sample and pic of the Fat Strong kick.

you need better compression and equalizing...

The key here is using the right effects. Try putting some hard ass compression on it, EQ it so there will be more mid-low freqs, and finally put some distortion effect all over it.

For starters kick 1 has an eq'd snare/hh which is what provides that in your face attack, and kick 2 doesn't. Kick 2's low end(<600hz) is around 20db quiter compared to kick 2, and doesn't have nearly enough sustain

Get yourself the Predatohm Plugin from Ohmboyz Massive Thunder!!

You Want to make fat Kicks Here is a free program Called Stomper.
Works pretty good

Do you ahve it? LOL

i had the delay plugin only.

I had read that TranceProductions.

But it simple that I still unable to get the kick to sound longer meaning to substain longer. I tried to compress as hard as possible.. Darn..

Now is how do I have to do to create the kick be as long as KICK 1? Thats my major qtn mark on my head.

I know about Compressor/Eq but then.. Kick 2 is the result of wat i got.

Thanks mate! Checking the site now and loading now!!!

Edit: This program is to create KICK is it?

You Can make alot of crazy kicks with it and other sound FX too.
It's pretty cool. Have fun with it.

yeah man. i manage to get it import of my kick n play ard.. will have alot of fun. thanks mate

Just a note: I wouldn't take those pics as accuratly comparing the two kicks, as one is zoomed in to 0.462 seconds, and the other is zoomed to 1.739 seconds.

Oh. I took that pic from Battery though. Didnt notice abt the zoom.

By the way. base on that KICk 2, Do i actually have to normalise, compressed hard and output gain much to achieve something like KIC 1???

you need a initial kick with a longer release (i can't remember if thats what it's called.. haha) but yeah.. for example.. rebirths 909.. add the 909 kick and turn the release up so you get that sub bass sound.. then it's compression and eq all the way.. (plus a little other secret i'll let you figure out )

ok cool. you see those 2 wave spectrums for kick1 and kick2 that rob posted?

well take a look at the 2nd kick. the kick has a few core elements you want. an initial slap, a thump or thud and an OOOOMMMFFF tail off. my guess is that if you increase the level of the 2nd kick anymore it begins to clip (cut off or distort) even though its still waaay quiter than kick1. the initial phase of your kick, the very start of the slap is too loud. it is in fact the loudest part of your kick by a long way which means it will have a hollow, flat a trebly kind of quality to it. you want the loudest part of your kick to be more in the thud area. theres a couple of ways you can sort this out. the first is the lazyman way. you can apply a very short fade at the start of the kick to cut some of the level off the start. you can then boost the overall level of the kick higher than you could without clipping.

a better solution is to whack a spectrum analyser on the effect channel for kick2 and a parametric EQ. take a look at the spectrum analsyer and make a note of the frequency of the initial slap. make a notch on the parametric EQ around that frequency. now for the thud. your kick kind of shrivels in the centre then gets a little louder then tails off. you want to fatten up that shrivelled centre bit. check out what frequency range that is and boost it 1 to 2 dB on the EQ. you should now be able to make that kick alot louder than you could before without clipping and it should have a thicker body and more of an ommph. but its not there yet. whack on a compressor. you will have to mess around with this an you will need a dB meter to really get the most out of it. on the dB check the peak level of the kick. if you set the threshold of the compressor higher than the peak level of your kick it will have no effect whatsoever. what you want to do is check on the spectrum analyser and see where the loudest point of the kick is. this ideally should be around the thump area (250 to 400hz). lets say this is -5db. if you set your compressor threshold to -5.5db it'll compress only a very short part of that loudest point. depending on the effect you want you will want to set the threshold lower or higher. the lower you go the more kick drum it will compress. set the release as desired. a longer release gives it a very subtle ooooooooooommmm quality as it slowly 'releases' compression. you can use the gain to make the kick louder and more prominent but if you up the gain too much it will begin to clip. if you EQed your kick efficiently you should be able to up the gain a bit more than you could before. try a different combinations of low threshold and higher gain. or high threshold and low gain. or high threshold and high gain. etc. you will get different kinds of thickness and presence in your kick by compressing and making louder certain frequencies.

and dont attempt any of this without the spectrum analyser or the dB meter until you can do it by ear! even then its probably a good idea to use both those tools to get the absolute most out of compression and EQ. hope this helps. post the new kick after you've tried some of the stuff in this thread so we can have a listen.

This is general advice..I did not listen to any clips. So take it as you will.

simple answer...learn how to use a compressor properly. If your just dicking around with the ratios and thresholds, ect..then you probably wont get anywhere. Eq is essential too, but not just any eq...you need to use a parametric eq so you can zero in on specific freaquencies and not just use those HP, BP, or LP slopes...using a parametric eq in combination with a compressor or two will make all the difference. A good start would be to make a individual kick and compress that to your liking. Then make a loop and compress that again but not as hard. Pump some eq on there....take one band down about 3 to 4 db, but make sure its a very thin cut and not a massive slope. Now that you have that set up try sweeping through the freqauencies until you like what you hear. You can also add some high end if you want, using the same EQ just increase a band about 3db and sweep from 1000 to 8000khz and back to see what you like(but dont stick to this as a must) remeber the golden rule, even though people may tell you strict rules to follow don't underestimate what you hear and what sounds good to you. One word of advice though, don't compress or mix on headphones; you will ens up pumping things up way to lound and have to fix them l8r, in which could have been avoided...well that turned out to be a longer post than I thought!

Limit out!

thanks for all the advices u all gave me.. I will work out on that.. thanks a millions!!

Now i had a better idea on it...

compression, eq and even more compression is the trick to success
