Curiosity Thread: Why Trance?
Ok so I am pondering... why do you guys like Trance so much still? I know that I once took great pleasure in listening to trance but that was a long time ago in my book (small exceptions here and there). Generally speaking I am not a genre hater. I separate my music based on what sounds like its quality both in production for individual tracks as well as set formation.
Personally I can't see anything about trance that is interesting that goes above the usual high and lows, recycled melodies and basslines. I can understand if you are just getting into the scene, because I remember those days well and even long for them sometimes when I wasn't so jaded. But for those of you who have been doin' this shit for 4+ years (random number thrown out there) I would like to hear an honest reason for why you still listen to/even choose trance over other genres.
Please respond if ONLY if meet the following criteria:
- listened to EDM for over 2 years.
- do not base your musical judgements on the quality of the substances' you have taken at clubs.
- do have at least some appreciation for other genres of EDM and don't base your decision on who to go out for as to whether they are on Dj Mag's top 100 list.
If I already know your answer to this question still post it for the sake of argument. This post is made with all sincerity because I want some perspective on trance now from those that still listen to it since I am so 'out of the loop.'
My Answer is simple. Its a type of music I was introduced to at a very young age thanks to my druged out step father. I mean I like ALL types of music but Trance or EDM in general really gives me a great feeling when listening, mixing etc.
ive been listening to trance for the 2-3 years. i dont mind house music at all especially at a club. i still listen and enjoy trance because i am addicted to it i need to hear it when i get when i drive to school when i drive to work. i just need it in my life and i cant help it. what is so wrong with that and why do you care so much?
nothing is wrong with it. I am curious because I want perspective. Question is what is wrong with THAT?
P.S. your response sucked, but thats ok. Anyone can be obsessed with music, why is the question. I know ya'll love it or you wouldn't constantly post on TRANCEADDICT.
hm i've listened to a little bit of underworld, chemical brothers about 5 years ago? they were the ones to introduce me to EDM. after that it was listening to paul oakenfold via a recommendation from a friend, then the GUs and i've just branched out from there. i think for me, at school especially, it provided very good background music while studying, and gave me a little bit of a pep while reading shitty economics books. in the club, listening to certain tracks still has me jumping around. i will admit however that trance lately has kinda bored me. i'll probably be vilified by saying this, but pvd (in february, not CPSS), armin (both ny visits this year), and tiesto (at avalon) have bored me/not impressed me at all. pvd at CPSS and ferry's avalon set in february redeemed trance in my eyes somewhat. lately i've been more appreciative of progressive, house, and breaks, and it's like, "hey, i get it now" when i listen to these genres. but i'll still have part of my heart in trance.
techno bro
techno is where its at
that and hip hop
trance is what i started listening to about two years ago...and even tho there is a lot of repetition and cheese out there...the best tracks can still lift me up when im feeling down n give me a happy feeling in my heart...and i still kinda believe in the vibe that it brings...**shruggs** this year however, i have been opening up to different genres as of late such as breaks and funky/hardhouse and now i love those as well...
however, sasha and even pvd (the first real trance dj i listened to) will always draw me back to what i started with...

What tipe of EDM do you favor now, if you still listen to EDM? Prog? House? Most(probably all) music is just recycled sounds/synths/melodies and basslines. are you looking for something different? |

I go to all kinds of different events, with all kinds of different music, and for the most part, I enjoy it all. Been doing it since the days when "James Brown is Dead" was considered "techno".
But it is especially trance that gives me a great feeling when I hear it.
Sometimes the lyrics of dance music (not just trance, but particularly) are amusing, if you pay much attention to them - amazing how sad songs are often made to sound so happy
It's the one genre that transcends all others while concurrently maintaining a cohesion with both house and techno.
It can be absolutely melodious, pleasantly and soothingly chilled, psychedelically mind-blowing, euphorically uplifting, or relentlessly driving.
Those Acid sounds really only came about with the addition of a Roland 303.
I don't know how anyone could possibly stick to one genre and one genre only as it would be like seeing the world in grayscale as opposed to color.
I try to maintain a broad and diverse palate. (If I was a DJ - palette.)
IMO Trance is the perfect style of music for me. It has absolutely everything I am looking for....well GOOD trance does anyway. The make up of a good song in my opinion is awesome sound effects that only an aquired ear can hear, a nice build up, awesome drop, dancey with lots of energy all the way through, possibly throw in a bit of breaks, or some chillout euphoric sounds, and just makes you feel good.
I know that sometimes artists disappoint you and sometimes all the new releases arent that great but there are people coming out every day, new fresh artists that can take it to another level if given the chance. Awesome tracks are out there and if you hunt long enough you will find them even though we dont live in a community where it is mainstream. And lets hope that the current artists we have today are always looking to improve theyre talent and keep on bringing it.
Cuz as long as theyre bringing it, Im comin to get it!
I started off listening to breaks and d&b but found my home with trance back in 2000 mostly because of Oakenfolds EM world tour sets and the early productions of BT, Sasha, and Tiesto. Over the course of the years I never really got bored with any one particular gene of EDM. I think it's important to keep an open mind when it comes to EDM because if you don't, of course trance, house or breaks will get boring to you. I go through my stages. Ill listen to Tiesto, Armin or Ferry for awhile just enought to get a good feel for what they are playing at that particular time. Then ill switch it up and listen to Sander K or Danny Howells.
As far as trance goes, it never gets boring to me nor do I think it's going downhill. This all the talented DJ's that spin trance, how could you possibly get bored with it? You have Fleming that it prob the most underrated DJ on the face of the earth that brings the progressive trance. You got uplifting/electro trance in Ferry. Tech trance in Marco V. Hard bangin German trance in PVD. And of course the Dutch style trance in Tiesto and Armin. As long as you don't become a muppet, I don't see how you can get bored with trance and it's nice to see that all these DJ have been making multiple appearances in the north east this year(NYC, DC, Boston, Baltimore)
With Labels like JOOF, Armada, Back Hole, Vandit, Ajunabeats, Tsunami, Perfecto, and Xtravaganza......Trance is here to STAY!!!
the power of the melody.
started listening around 1999, and loved it ever since....
it just gives me a feeling of freedom, and something that can always put a smile on my face..and that's why i listen to it at work in the car and everywhere I go....it also brings back alot of good memories like the ones i had in ibiza and summerstage.
and of course it gets my energetic and sometimes i got nuts during the build up and drop.
hope that makes sense
I started out with trance, and i'd never turn my back on it, I'm an addict for those hard bangin tracks with energetic melodies, they never get old to me.
i started listening around 97 when i was pretty young, first it started with basic radio dance (ace of base, la bouche, etc..) then it slowly evolved into what would be called hard trance and hardstyle (was considered techno then like everything else), then it was pure trance (pvd, push, ferry, tiesto, etc.). now i really am not into mainstream trance, it really gets annoying to be honest, it is repetitive and everything you hear produced lately is no longer a mystery its all over ASOT. by having armin play all the brand new tracks every week, i feel almost compelled to stop listening to it, nothing sounds new, every track is a recreation of the other in trance these days.
lately i find myself listening to alot of house and progressive house, also a little tribal, and breaks. and i find that to be the most experimental, i really cannot find one song that sounds like another, everything has its own defining beat (unless the tracks are from the same artist.) the question would not be why do i listen to trance? it would be why do i listen to EDM?
EDM is perhaps the most experimental genre in music, it takes the origins of classical music, remixes rock, remixes rap, or any other genre you can possibly imagine from any country, and puts it in a form in which people will dance till the morning. EDM is entirely open ended, no matter what you listen to, you always have something you will like in EDM.
the reason i like EDM is simple: any composition can put me into any state of mind just by changing to another subgenre. thats my $.02
i've been classically trained for so long. piano 9 years, string bass 6 years. its all about melody to me. different types of edm also catch my ear tho, like prog, breaks, some techno and some house. i find it better to enjoy edm as opposed to just trance.

been in the edm scene for 7 years and havent found a genre yet thet has the emotion and energy that trance has, no other type of music gives me the feeling that trance does, and if you love trance then you know what i'm talkin bout
of corse i like other genres of edm..uk hardhouse, some house,breaks...i just prefer trance

i was first introduced by trance...but later on i started gettin into house, deep house, progressive and tribal...and i still listen to trance...i say u cant appreciate 1 of the genres without the other...cuz if u only stick to one genre...ur gonna ruin it for yourself.
hehe.. heres how it all started for me.
Musics always been a big part of my life, Ive been playing classical piano for 6 years starting since i was 6. Then started playing guitar.
Ive been going to greece almost every summer since I was a baby, actually lived there for a year when I was 3 (long story) and every year while I was there I would listen to whatever was on some Music TV channel called SEVEN X, where they played House and old school Apollo 440. I also got involved with Punk while everyone else was listening to Nirvana. I heard NoFX - Punk in Drublic and was hooked. From there I got Sex Pistols - Nevermind the bullocks, every clash CD, and many many many local punk Band CDs. I even Released my own Local Punk Compilation CD when i was 15 (Long story - Didnt sell too well, costed me alot of money especially at the time). I listened to Punk, and played in a few bands, until it got saturated and sucked dry by the industry.
at the same time i listened (and still do) to Hip Hop, my oldest brother used to listen to Mobb Deep, Wu tang, BIG, Tupac all that good shit. But after Tupac and Biggie died and the whole east coast west coast shit began, I gave Hip hop a rest.
Then Tranceport entered my life, and changed everything. I stopped listening to any punk, stopped listening to any hip hop or any other music, and I was obsessed with trance 100%. My playlist went from Rancid and Lost boyz to Oakenfold and Matt Darey.
Alas, I feel trance has been saturated and become Formulatic. Moved on to Techno. Back to listening to hip hop (underground mostly), and I am now back to producing some wierd ass music involving alot of my influences. And no you can't hear.... yet.
-Edit-I never once Dressed like a goofy ass looking Punk Kid, Never once dressed like a Candy Raver nor Do I dress like a Rapper. Following Trends like that always seemed so silly and it was always around me.
You pose a very good question that is very close to me.. Why is it that we still love trance? Well, if you want an honest viewpoint from my perspective here is what it is for me
Trance saved my life!
I spent 10 years in the Punk scene and was forced to spend a good year plus of my life living on the streets in abandoned houses and jumping freight trains to get around. It was by no means an enjoyable time and it was only by the grace of God that he brought some good people in my life that I was able to get back on track. Back in 97 when I was passing through LA I met a girl in Hollywood who just moved there and well a long story short she brought me into her life helped me get cleaned up and introduced me to some new people that I had never had a chance to be around.
I grew up with the aggression of not understanding people and why the world was so cruel but these people were some of LAs key promoters at the time and we all got to know each other. The night that broke me out of the Punk Rock realm was this one night that I went out with some friends who had molecules, ya I hate to even bring that up but it was a part of what snapped me into this.
Anyway, my friend Davin had this little Honda Civic with a system in it and he put in Christopher Lawrences Rise Album and we just drove around the mountains in LA. From the SECOND I heard the bells on that first track, Hunteman PhreaksI was in love. It had the energy that Punk Rock did but in a different manner. I felt a connection with a sound that seemed so real and I fell in love with trance.
So that was 7 years ago and I still am in love with it!! Back in 99 I felt myself getting older and I wanted so bad to give back to the scene and sound that I loved that I picked up DJing after watching Christopher play at the Seven party. It was the first thing in my life that I was ever good at. Eventually, I started producing and my second track that I ever wrote was called Somewhere Else that I wrote for him as a way to say thanks and I sent to him. Later on he sent me an email to let me know that he played it at the Dance Star Awards when he won the #1 DJ in America award.
So its the progression that I love. For others I can see that as their love as well. Some people move into DJing, Producing, throwing parties or some keep it alive by supporting those who are giving back to this sound to keep it alive. Thats what Surface is for me. Its here for you not for me to get me rich but just a love that I want to share with you. Ok enough sappiness ; )
Seriously, I am so glad to see all of you pushing this sound forward. Sorry for the long message but you asked a question that I havent thought about in a while. ; )
Take Care.
