it would be a good thing because then there would be no Notre Dame

but seriously, i think that if there wasnt religion, there would be something to take its place, due to human nature...partly because some people need something to believe in, and partly because others need to have some form of control over others.

only half awake so i hope this makes as much sense to you as it is to me right now lol

As jrbuddha said, some people need to believe in what others tell, and some other people want the power of controlling the beliefs of people. So I bet that if religion don't exist, someone will invent it.

I do agree that us, as humans, need to something to look up to, but I do not think it's a matter of being controlled. Either way, religion keeps people in line. The two essential things to proper formation of any human is Religion, and Family. Family provides the nurturance for the individual to develope into a respectful, loving human. One that will be succesful in life later on. Religion teaches us morals and self-disipline. Both essntial to the harmony of humankind. Without Religion, our world would crumble. Although, I believe there are a lot of negative aspects to religion, and I am not so for actually practising religion (going to church, praying, etc.) I do believe that the main focus of religion (the teachings) are what is important. It's funny seeing all these religions across the world fighting because they believe in diffierent things. But if you stop and analys them for a moment, what are they fighting for. All religions (unless there is one that does not apply) follow similiar principles. Respect all, love your neighbour, value your friends and family, not your wallet. Of course, this is merely subjective, and everyone has their opinion, but I truly believe this is what's right.

fairly broad question.

uhhh...it wouldn't be the 21st century. it would be the 3,688,256th century.

on a serious note, i don't think civilization would have stood a chance without devotion to a perception a of higher power or strength to face the unknown through faith.
