Derek Jeter

I was looking at the payroll stats earlier and was wondering if someone could please explain why this guy is the 4th highest paid in mlb considering his numbers are nowhere near the likes of Ramirez,Bonds etc.In fact hitting less than 25 hr and around 75 rbi's his numbers are almost half those of the big boys, worth 18.6 million,i dont think so.

Derek Jeter is more than just numbers. He is the captain of the ball club and is irreplaceable. (This coming from someone who loathes the Yankee's mind you)

So he's more of a figurehead then? Or does team captain do a lot then, cos i figured it would be Joe Torre doing all the motivating etc etc

He's definitely the motivator, because he leads by example. He plays hard every day, and is arguably the best defensive shortshop in the league. Not to mention he's a lifetime .315 hitter. RBI's and HR's aren't the only thing to base a players worth on.

He also brings about 15$ million dollars in outside revenue to the Yankees. In terms of ticket sales, merchandise, etc... no other position player brings more money to his team than Jeter. Well, scratch that... Bonds. But other than him...

saw him in the twins double header yesterday and he played well,i guess he's like david beckham in his field, not the best player but a marketing dream and influential.

1. he brings the hoes to the ballpark
2. hes a leader
3. those numbers are among the best for SS
4. i think hes a product of their farm system...loyalty
5. he gets the job done in october
6. the yanks love to pay huge gobs of money for players

Exactly. That's the best comparison to make. He's not a great defensive SS, he's a decent offensive player, but it's really all the intangibles and marketing he brings that granted him that 18 million a year contract.

I don't know how many times I've saw clips of him couming out the stands with a bloody face just to catch a foul ball!

I hate that play. If that were someone like Orlando Cabrera or Caesar Izturis, it would have been a much more routine play. Not many SS would have had to fall into the stands to make that play, and that is the only part that made that an exceptional play.

It's funny how things like that on defense are overlooked. Mike Cameron is one of the top defensive CFs in all of baseball. However, he is SO good, that all of his catches look routine. He rarely has to dive for a ball, which makes him much less flashy than Andruw Jones, but he is almost equal in terms of defense. So next time you see an amazing defensive play by an average defender, remember that there a few guys out there that would've made that play look routine.

I've watched Scott Rolen make 3rd look routine for 3 years now!

I think Bobby Crosby at the A's has potential to be a great SS in the future.

Wait till you see Khalil Greene of the Padres. He has made some ridiculous plays at short this year. There was one game where they were wearing the old uniforms on a throwback day and he made about 4 - 5 amazing plays. Something so cool about seeing him in that uni making those plays.

Too bad their season is over.

True... I was kind of hoping they'd take the West. Soon enough...

Anyway, here's some Khalil videos. I believe the one I was talking about was the "05.15.2004 | Khalil Greene's glove story" video.

he also signed his huge deal when salaries were getting disgustingly out of hand. The market has now since tailed off and Jeter will probably not sign as big next contract.

But I'd still pay him that much money. He and Bernie are probably the two best clutch hitters come playoff time and there is just no replacing a Derek Jeter. He's a classy guy all around.

Duh... I'm an idiot. Here's the Khalil videos.

Also, here's another great defensive SS:

Cesar Izturis
Check this video for his best play: 09.23.2004 | Izturis' great stop and flip

Also, here is a link to the best play I have seen all year. Amazing play...

Marco Scutaro & Bobby Crosby

The play is this one: 04.15.2004 | Marco Scutaro starts a double play

Play of the year, and one of the best I've ever seen in my life. Watch Crosby come across the bag... can't get any sweeter than that.
