i will tell you my list of guys that looked like tools in movies

ben affleck "boiler room" - he looked like such a tool in the movie. i could not believe for once he was a con business man

ben affleck "daredevil" - could not believe he was a superhero. looked more like a gay man awaiting to go to the rainbow room.

ben affleck "gigli" - no other words to explain it. tool!

basically, i think ben affleck is a gimp, and should quit acting. he has no acting skills whatsoever.

ok. back to discussion.

top 3 roles :

edward norton/brad pitt - fight club

edward norton - american history x

russell crowe / jaoquin pheonix - gladiator (<== it really touched me there. especially the hanz zimmer song that played when russell

crowe found his wife and child hung by the guards.)
jim carrey - the majestic (<== cheesy, but i loved the movie for some strange reason)

michael j. fox - back to the future <== who can say this is not a classic. classic dude!

for females, can i name

elizabeth berkley - showgirls <== what can i say. wow! who's getting the collector's dvd with the free shotglasses and board game?

is this based on the quality of the acting, or the quality of the actual role on it's own??

I'm surprised you didn't put up a list and say "if you don't agree then you obviously haven't watched movies much"

Posted by Subey on Sep-30-2004 13:43:

Apparently all the top male actors want to star in The Davinci Code.
So far its "Russell Crowe, George Clooney, Tom Hanks and Hugh Jackman". I guess it'll be a big ego boost to whoever gets it.

I dont really see why you're bringing up issues like this in a totally unrelated thread go do something constructive rather than posting pointless comments like this

I completely agree. As soon as I saw this thread I was going to mention Jaoquin's role in this film - the evil in his eyes, his facial expressions. He's definately one of the best actors of our time.

absolutely. i don't understand why she was looked down upon for playing that role. she really made you identify with her character...she played the helpless, yet determined stripper/show girl perfectly i think.

Joaquin was excellent in Return to Paradise...so was Vince Vaughn...excellent movie...if you haven't seen it, you must!

I would say the quality of acting is the factor to look at here.

The quality of the role has nothing to with the movie, it's what the actor does in the role to make it outstanding.

Some movies could be pure shit, but thanks to the actor/actress, the role is energized.

Taxi Driver, could've been a shit movie about a psychological damaged taxi cab driver... but DeNiro brought his method of acting to the role and became Travis Bickle.

Pirates of the Caribbean, a typical summer blockbuster full of action and adventure (same old storyline) but Johnny Depp gave one hell of a performance as Jack Sparror.

There are tons of other examples as well, and sure there could be reversal here, some roles may call for a profound and deep sense of acting but perhaps the actor isn't qualified for that role. Honestly i feel that away about most of John Cusack movies...

Posted by dj tek on Sep-30-2004 14:38:

in random order

Al Pacino in Scarface[best and most convincing performance by an actor ever imo.]

Robert De Niro in Raging Bull[a true character played perfectly by Bobby D.]

Jamie Lee Curtis in Halloween[best 'terrified' look ever]

Johnny Depp in Edward Scissorhands[so subtle but soo good]

Patricia Arquette in Lost Highway[she plays 2 separate roles in the film.. if you can define 'mysteriously sexy', her role in this film would be it.]

Posted by Slylee on Sep-30-2004 15:33:

tom hanks - Cast Away & Saving Private Ryan

Samuel L. Jackson & Bruce Willis - Pulp Fiction

Uma - Kill Bill

Posted by NiteMer on Sep-30-2004 15:40:

Kevin Spacey in Seven.
Mel Gibson in The Patriot/Braveheart
The guys that play Harold and Kumar in Harold and Kumar.

Posted by Slylee on Sep-30-2004 15:59:

oh yea, cuba gooding, jr. & tom cruz were both excellent in Jerry McGuire...

I dont set out to be critical the way you seem to - if i disagree with something then I'll make it known. You just seem to make throwaway pointless comments without any depth or knowledge.

Anyway, back to the topic:

Actors:
1. Jack Nicholson/ The Shining
2. Vincent Cassel/ La Haine or Irreversible - both amazing
3. John Malkovich/ Of Mice And Men
4. Liam Neeson/ Schindler's List
5. Marlon Brando/ A Streetcar Named Desire

Actresses:

1. Hilary Swank/ Boys Dont Cry
2. Jodie Foster/ The Silence Of The Lambs
3. Meryl Streep/ Kramer Vs Kramer
4. Shelly Duvall/ The Shining
5. Julie Christie/Doctor Zhivago
