Disillusioned with work...
..so here is an old theme, but I'm going to revisit it. I've been feeling totally shite while at work these past couple of weeks. I've lost all motivation to work for the corporation (Bell) that employs me. This happens to me with every job. I get bored, and can't find the challenge with work.
I was wondering if any of you had any advice about coping with this kind of thing.
I'm aware of all the small things you can do to make work more bearable (posting threads about work on TA), but I'm wondering if a lot of you have the same problem I do. What strategies do you use to cope?
This whole feeling started after reading a thread earlier in the week. Someone wrote something that really stuck with me. They were commenting on working for corporations, and said something like: "Why would I work to achieve someone else's dreams when I have my own that i'd like to achieve?"
So, what is it you guys do to stay sane at work?
Take the breaks you're entitled to.

DONT LOOK AT THE CLOCK
& Lastly if you're truely not happy. Get out if you can!!!
I work for CIBC and can totally understand. I'm finding myself fairly bored and if i'm not bored and am fairly busy its the same sort of work. The challenge is gone and now it's just the same old stuff. What do I do? I try my best to mix it up, to take on more responsiblities but there's only so much I can take before it all dries up. On the plus side to the corporate world there are endless opppertunities to move on somewhere else. I find a great solace in knowing that pretty soon i'll be moving on to something new (until I get tired of that

What is it that you do there?
Is it a rigidly structured position, or can you talk to your manager about taking on new responsibilities to use the skills you aren't using?
Just this week I had that convo with my new boss - and she was very open to me branching away from my job description a bit to take on things that are more suited to my interests and skill set.

But listen, I know shit loads of people who hate what they do, but fuck do they ever make up for it on the weekends. Work is work, but that shouldn't stop you from enjoying life. Party hard, or do whatever it is that makes you happy outside of 9-5. Especially if it pays well, take the cheque for the meantime and rock & roll. |

If you are living for the weekend though, that's not happiness. You spend so much of your life at work, try to enjoy it.
That being said, I hate my job, but I'm trying to look for something else while also trying to make my current job more interesting in the meantime.
I guess that's just the way things are. You have to continually develop new challenges for yourself when working. Be that through new opportunities with your present employer, or through moving on.
It's amazing how quickly loayalty in the busineess world has been abandoned, not that it's a bad thing at all. Back in the day, it seems as though employees felt some sort of obligation to stick with one company and move up that way. This just isn't the current landscape of the business world.
If you're working for someone, they're taking 40 hours (more or less) a week from you... you don't owe them anything.

I think you and I are a lot alike; I get bored really easily and I require highly challenging work to even bother considering staying at a company.
I realise it's hard to leave a position that grants you the finer accoutrements in life, but a person spends so much of it investing in their job you might they may as well opt for something that will make them excited when they rise in the morning.
I suggest this because I've had to take on positions that were not in my field over the past 3 or 4 years. And I've had many moments of solace in jobs of security. But then I reflect on how hard I've worked to get into my profession, and finally after so much effort I'm right where I want to be.
People view happiness in different; for some it's monetary, and for others it has to be more. Regardless, it feels great to bite the bullet and screw the predictable.

After 4 years in university and 2 paid projects, it was obvious to me that what I thought I would love was actually about as fun as a gorilla eating my left nut. And then I looked at where I am now, thought to myself hey, it's not my dream job, but I don't even really have a dream job anymore. Dreams have a way of losing their lustre when they become reality. So even though Monday-Friday 9-5 is not the most exciting part of my week, my work is important, I'm good at my job, I have my own office, I get treated like a human being, the pay is decent, so what else do I really need to ask for right now? The time for fun is AFTER work, not during! Don't do what you love, love what you do. ![]() |
