Talking Who was more convincing in the first debate

Bush or Kerry?

Posted by malek on Oct-01-2004 02:31:

airy bil bush

Posted by BadBadNeil on Oct-01-2004 02:37:

I think Kerry will gain a small bounce from this debate.

Posted by Psionic on Oct-01-2004 02:41:

No doubt Kerry won that debate. BTW, I recorded 4 Bushisms just from that debate

Posted by ZinG on Oct-01-2004 02:45:

btw I said who was more Convincing not WHO SHOULD BE THE PRESIDENT
ok

Posted by DR86 on Oct-01-2004 02:47:

though some may doubt this, i really tried to stay as neutral as i could when watching this debate. nevertheless, i really do feel that kerry presented a quite strong image and strenghtened his platform in this debate.

Posted by BadBadNeil on Oct-01-2004 02:56:

Convincing wise I think Bush spoke more from the heart and Kerry talked more about what he thought America wanted to hear. In the end I think Kerry had more answers than Bush did.

Posted by OurManFlint on Oct-01-2004 03:04:

This isn't accurate because I'm still counting, but Bush blinked a number of 1,876,787 times in the debate.

Posted by Psionic on Oct-01-2004 03:04:

The one thing that got on my nerves was that Bush kept using the phrase "we can't give them mixed messages, that we're in the wrong war, wrong place wrong time." It was definitely hackneyed in this debate.

Posted by priveye03 on Oct-01-2004 03:05:

If you look from a straight debate sense, as in who gave off the stronger impression and who had the best etiquet, Kerry was the decisive victor, there is no doubt about that. And I think Bush was way to redundent in his points. I started finishing his sentences for him because it was the same time and time again. Of course Kerry did that a couple times too, but no way in the extent of Bush.

Posted by Psionic on Oct-01-2004 03:09:

I think what shook Bush up (and made me laugh) was when Lehrer asked Kerry to clarify the colossal misjudgements and he said "Well, where should I begin?"

Well...the thing is that each candidate was speaking their platform. It can be argued that Bush's "talking from the heart" was also a crowd-pleasing tactic. I guess it just depends on what your views are.

Kerry was able to discuss specific policies and solutions in a blunt, straight-forward manner where Bush generally failed to do so. I also think that Kerry did a good job of counteracting some of the Bush campaign's more damaging accusations (that he is an indecisive flip-flopper and a ditherer) by speaking in such a straight-forward, convicted way. Bush had some severe problems discussing and rebutting specific policies with regards to North Korea, Iraq and the war on terror more generally and - considering that this was meant to be his "strongest" debate topic - ended up on the defensive for most of the night. A successful debate here would have just about ended the Kerry campaign, but Bush failed to land any significant blows and I doubt that America's impression of Bush and a strong and decisive leader (considering the blows that Kerry was able to land about Bush's failure to adequately defend the US and Bush's constant - but characteristic - "umming", "ahhing" and dithering on key points) will be held quite so unquestioningly after this debate.

I just hope that there were a lot of undecided voters out there watching the debate tonight because Kerry really was able to undermine some of Bush's key policy platforms while elucidating his own platform (for the first time in a lot of ways) strongly, decisively and concisely. 1-0 to Kerry.

Did one of these two guys say "...lead the world..." at any moment in the debate or was I not paying close attention?

I believe Kerry did in his opening and closing remarks.

I was reading in the NY Times yesterday on the op-ed page a letter from Al Gore basically telling Kerry what he needs to do to debate Bush. Considering, at least in my opinion, that the questions were heavily formulated against Bush's policies and that Kerry remained confident, I look back on that article and I don't see a thing Kerry missed. Bravo!

Typical Bush/Rove ploy though. Just take a half-truth, run with it, repeat it at every opportunity and just hope that, eventually, it sticks. If you can give the public your message condensed into pithy soundbites, repeated ad nauseum then this form of indoctrination replaces the need to have to actually discuss specific policy where possible. Once again it's cynical, it's lowest common-denominator politics but it works and damned if it isn't the GOP through and through.

Posted by sensorium on Oct-01-2004 03:28:

It was a sad, almost rehearsed, debate. I was bored to death. The stupid comments here and there kept me awake though.

Posted by LiquidX on Oct-01-2004 03:35:

I watched it carefully, and I think that American people that didnt know much about Kerry, just from the Flip Flop comments and etc.. I think people will change their mind after this debate. Bush seemed nervous, too hesitate, and.. you could see him sort of angry.. Kerry did pretty good, just what he needed. Overall, a great debate.

Posted by Yoepus on Oct-01-2004 03:36:

bah wtf this come from?

just as I make my own poll because I don't see one here... this comes out of no where!

geez, I'm getting blind sided all over today

Posted by Kurve on Oct-01-2004 03:50:

overall kerry had a stronger debate... i felt that bush never answered non of the questions he always brought up the same thing over and over again like someone that didnt know what to say so bring the same thing up over and over that was something kerry had agaist him.

I had to miss it due to travel arrangements, but I'm looking up a transcript as soon as I'm done browsing TA. Still, it's not the same as watching it.

Ya much the pundit critique on Bush was in his "body language" and mannerism/reaction when Kerry was speaking.

Bah, what am I doing.... MY THREAD MY THREAD!!!..
