Mp3's - Acceptable bitrate...

At what bitrate do you call mp3s acceptable? Or... Do you only BUY your records??

I have f*cking no idea if this is posted before
Fuck the button on this one!

i always encode at 192. it works fine for me.

Posted by Shahar on Oct-02-2004 16:10:

192Kbps is enough...

Posted by Mattsanity on Oct-02-2004 16:21:

320 KBPS

Simply the best

Posted by TweeK on Oct-02-2004 16:30:

Thumbs up

192

It's not all about the bitrate, the encoder used makes quite a difference as well. A crap encoder will make even 320kbps mp3 sound crap whereas a good encoder can make a 112kbps mp3 sound good.

That's true, however I recognize it merely as some crackle and probably also distortion but NOT in general. They're "Little errors" that are pretty anoying!

I guess I second that. However, I once listened to a 128 kbps mp3 version of Dido - Don't Leave Home. And when I really focus on the high-hats, I'm like...

Posted by Turner on Oct-02-2004 19:16:

The majority of mine are 192 kbps

Posted by Hanki on Oct-02-2004 21:12:

Almost every track which I use is in 192 Kbps bitrate and the quality is good, so I think it's enough...

Posted by DjSimonB on Oct-03-2004 00:32:

192 for me.

I use iTunes for my encoding btw.

I can still listen to 128, but it's noticably different for me. 192 sounds good enough to me, it's not quite wav or vinyl quality but it's decent, and I don't want to take up any more space on my disk.

Posted by XeQtOr on Oct-03-2004 08:10:

Anything above 192 is acceptable..

Ever thought of 160 kbps? That's the point when I usually (through both speakers and headphones) don't hear any irritating decrease in quality.

i live in the early 1990's. i live in Iowa dude, where everyone here still listens to paula abdul, green day, and mc hammer.

did i say 1 gb?
i meant i have 1 gb RAM and a 500 MB hard drive.

i was just kidding. i choose either VBR or 192. i would do 256 in the extreme circumstances.

*cough* Hahaha, yea 192 is often called the standard.
(Lol, all the nervous smileys)

Posted by muhkuh on Oct-03-2004 21:55:

128 kbit/sec are acceptable with a decent VBR encoder

Posted by Peter K on Oct-04-2004 04:51:

128 is fine for me

Posted by TranceXtasy on Oct-04-2004 15:16:

192 kbps is what most of my tracks are at.

Posted by countach on Oct-06-2004 13:44:

LAME VBR 128-320 --alt-preset-standard is the official encoding method in the scene.

Posted by dchaves on Oct-06-2004 14:22:

128 it's ok with my shitty speakers, they sound all the same with mp3 over 128 kbps

VBR isn't working with Trance. You probably save only 0.1 or 0.2 MB at the most because the fact that Trance constantly occupies the high shelf with the hi-hats and crashes.
It would work well with oldies, though

Posted by CrackedLcd on Oct-06-2004 23:47:

I always encode @ a min of 160.
