best mood for mixing?
what mood were you in when you made your best mix. For me, it was coming back from a bad day at school. I usually feel the most motivated to mix when im not in high spirits. I guess DJ'ing raises them up.
Coming home late at night from a party or something, or at a party late at night. i just seem to do it better when im tired
After a nite of clubbing, being KINDA drunk, or stoned.... which is strange... LOL... it was hard to mix stoned, but I did a damn good job... just alot of work to make it good...
After 1 or 2 beers, when you get that slight buzz but aren't too drunk to think/mix coherently.
My best recorded mixes (ie: something i hear sober) is when i come home from the club after getting wasted or not, but completely convinced i was better than whoever was playing. Nothing is better motivation than someone behind the tables that you know you can outdo hands down.
mixing is much fun on base (amphetamines), you can't go wrong because your sense of timing is so pinpoint accurate
in soberness, i mix best when i'm nice and fresh after a bath in the morning, and not had a chance to have a spliff yet
although having said that, i used to find it very difficult to mix stoned and used to cock it up nearly every time. but i have persued mixing whilst stoned and i can now do it! i think there are 2 seperate learning curves with mixing, sober mixing, and stoned mixing.
I tend not to work under the influence of anything.
Don't want to do base as I don't want to become dependant on a substance to perform well. The problem with substances over time is that you will eventually depend on them just to get a mediocre performance out. Not talking about addiction, it's more a psychological thing. I have seen this happen to so many DJs.
Best mood for me is happy and excited and after having DJayed since 1986 I surprise myself at still being able to find the motivation. I truly love what I do.
Sometimes if I feel tired I can have trouble feeling I want to do it. I tend to play better if I get to play in a new place and see a new crowd. Sometimes you just know you are in the zone as soon as you play the first track. Crowd enthusiasm also has an effect on me. If people don't look as if they want to be there during the warm up guys I look to take on the challenge of getting people fired up. I love leaving people with the memory of how the night just changed.
I also love bouncing around like a nut behind the decks when I hear a track I like. People respond to that too, so I guess I DJ better when I see that.
Plain and simple, if I didn't love it I wouldn't do it.
I DJ best when I'm happy and given that I am doing a job that I love then I am happy quite a lot.
Cheers

). stevie G (sundissential resident) was on before me and they were actually shouting the guy to get off lol. everybody was well behind me, i dropped the first track and the place went mental. from there on i knew it was going to be the best set i've ever played, and it was! it gives you confidence, and (none coke induced) confidence is a massive help behind the decks.
I will also have to thrown my hat in the ring of drugs. One night I came home after doing some x and they were very speedy. A friend and I mixed till 6:30 in the morning and some of that stuff ended up being my best so far, until the sun started coming up....that really fucks me up when I see the sun come up the next day without any sleep for some reason.
After watching/hearing anothre fantastic set of a fantastic DJ
Happy and relaxed.
right after sex. hands down my best sets... and just play it loud enough so she leaves. heh
I'm not sure what mood I'm in when I mix best...But I do know that when I got some new phat tunes it gets my adrenalin going and I'm giving it my best effort to mix those (often really different types of tunes) together!
I'm just a bedroom dj, so I'm not a crowd pleaser...but I guess being in an estatic/euphoric state is the best motivation for me eventually.
you mix best after a fight with your girlfriend after fucking up in school. the more unhappy you are the best. you go to your room thinking "i cant mix now" but after you put the first tune on the decks you forget everything and you play like this is the last set of your life. and when you stop... you feel like a new born baby

yeah i mix my best stuff when im either really pissed off or really pumped up/excited from hearing a great set by someone else. ]
when im pissed its just like "ok fuck you, im gonna rock out!" my best ever was at a house party i spun, and some kid came up to me and said "do you have any breaks?" that was a big no no, and got me really mad, and then i just dropped all the hard pumping beat i had in my bag for like 2 hours straight. overall i think i spun for about 3-4 hours that night and was my best set ever.
but when you get home from a club or where ever listening to a great set, and its just like "more music" when you are allready in the vibe the tracks flow much better i think.
im always in the mood to mix, any time day or night
the music gets me pumped so no matter what mood im previously in, as soon as it starts playing it doesnt matter how good or bad the mix is, usually they arent bad at all unless i get sidetracked and mix in the next track late in the current one
mixing stoned is pretty different, for me it is a bit harder since i kinda get lost in the sounds, it gets harder to tell if it sounds good or not as a mix and usually its kindof off, honestly when im mixing stoned i feel much more inexperienced... i havent mixed while drinking in a long time so i dunno how great it sounds, im way more comfortable mixing sober... anytime i pull off a really good mix(sober) it gives me somewhat of an eargasm which is quite comparable to peaking on MDMA which is even better since the rush comes from the music instead of some chemicals
i agree that mixing while on some substance can lead to dependancy and that would kill me to know that in order to pull off a good mix i couldnt do it sober
ive had my share of drugs and i dont have a problem with them, but so far its been best for me when sober

I Love mixing when i'm on teh buzz
When i am on Ectasy & Cracks....
BUT THE BEST IS....no matter sober/not... for example im sad.. n i play sad melody trance sets... n i will get more SAD.. n it is so In TRANCE like im LOSSSSS.... haha
okay, so i know your moods about as far as how WELL you mix, but what about even motivation to START mixing. When i get bored of mixing, i need a certain feeling to get my back into it. same for you guys?
when i just feel good, like this afternoon, bought about 6 house records. At home i started spinning them, 6 records nicely mixed without too much effort. Coz, i just feel good today. got everything pretty much settled, college is ok, gf is sweet, life is good ya know.
I once made a very cool mix, and i did it after 3 shots of whiskey glass ( a quarter filled ) with pure tequila, and beer... and wine etc ) i was wasted, but the mix was perfect! the rest of the mixes sucked however. It was just fooling around on the decks with some friends so it was all cool
