Your oldest coin

Today at work, someone paid with a penny from 1929. I promptly switched it out with one of my own, much more recent pennies. I save all the old pennies that read "One Cent" on the back (I actually perfer it aesthetically as well), for basically no reason at all other than I like them. But keeping up with the proud COR tradition of useless posts, I decided to make a post to ask, whats the oldest coin you have or that has come through your posession?

When my dad, my brother, and I used to collect coins the oldest coin that I can remember us having right now was a 1919 penny.

I have an Edo period coin from 1680 that was a gift to me from my Japanese host brother when I was in Japan last summer

My concern is, and I'd have to check with my accountant, that having an extra penny might bump me up into a new tax thing...

do you mean the STEEL pennies? i odnt think they used copper for pennies in 43 or 44....i have a few of them. i have a few sets of the wheat pennies that you are talking of. my grandfather used to collect them, and we got them when he died. umm i have an indian head penny, forget the year. and i think the oldest coin that i have is a nickel from the late 1800s. the date is worn out, but it one of those libery nickels.

the wheat pennies are nice though, i prefer them to the ones we have now.

Posted by Radagast on Oct-07-2004 02:59:

Those steel pennies aren't worth very much at all.

Posted by Zewad on Oct-07-2004 03:38:

its not the steel ones,.. its like a copper penny from a certain mint,.. like some mint that only produced a few,... im not coin guru... just somethign ive heard over the years

just because they overthrew the king doesn't mean they swapped the entire mondetory system within 3 years

got a few of those too.... i once found a 1944 Quarter burried in dirt, and it was well weathered and both sides were worn out shiny. I could still read the 1944 on it though.

Lemme explain this some people might not understand. 1943 Copper pennies are worth the most because there are so few of them. In those times Copper was being used during the war, so instead of Copper, pennies were made in mass production out of Zinc. And there arent many known Copper pennies out there.
