Today's "radio airplay" music is just not appealing anymore

i don't know.. today's radio airplay is just not appealing to me anymore. here is proof by listing the top 20 albums from this week, this week 5 years ago, and this week 10 years ago... this week's list, i haven't even heard of probably 75% of them.. i don't get it.. and the list 5 years ago, i listened to probably 75% of them, and the list 10 years ago, i remember listening to all of them.. is it just me, or is music on a very steep decline right now.. who is going to bring it back up on the incline?

it is just that music is very sad right now.. my friends keep asking me , "why do you listen to trance and your cds all the time?.. why don't you ever listen to your radio?" . i tell them because the music is not appealing. if i do listen to the radio, i listen to old contemporary, 80's classics, or 90's classics. i do not listen to top40 radio stations. i can't. am i the only person feeling this way ?

if anyone who listens to BBC in europe, please post your current top 20 and share. just interested. i would look for it, but i am lazy.

i don't mind a litle radio now and again, not all stations play the top 20 albums.

Your talking bout what the average person likes in music (thats why its called POP(popular) music),

You've got to remember that most of the poplation are all very simple when it comes to pleasing them with music and fickle, how bad is rnb and how many ppl like it (all those teenage girls, which actually annoys me when trying to find a gf with similar music interests in the uk, they all fall for alchopops and CHEESE)

and how quickly does a pop song last for
then again girls like to follow their gender like sheep, (fasion - they all end up looking the same, base most things on looks etc...)

man, the only way u get noticed is if your different to everyone else, but then most ppl try to be the same to fit it....ok whole different subject.

You just insulted yourself more than once.

i am not aiming at one genre or anything. i am just saying that today's "top" artists aren't really great, and if the "top" artists are not great, then we can just point to the fact that music is at a downfall at the moment. i am saying that back then, yes i was listening to nirvana, but also i was listening to stuff like r kelly, green day, boys ii men, and alanis. i am a variety guy. i like to what the term says "channel surf".. i love to indulge my knowledge in all kinds of music. even hindi music, if i know someone that listens to hindi music. hahahahaha

i am trying to point the fact that the current top 20 isn't really giving me the jumps or frills. i just do not like the artist, or have never heard of them before. i know some radio stations play a variety outside the "top40", like classic stuff. i listen to those radio stations from time to time, but whenever they play the classics, my hands stays static, and i listen. however, when the radio station plays something "top40", my fingers tends to move towards the scan button. you know what i mean? i can't stay interested in today's "top40" right now. well some i can such as nelly's current song (forgot the name sorry), avril's song "my happy ending" (i can stand it long enough to listen to it. at first i hated it. now i like it), and joss stone. other than that, nothing else. my choice is either the oldies or EDM.

well then you have to ask, is it really the music or is it really changes in your preference and I guess tolerance for music.

I think it is the format radios with their powerplays,
who are killing the music...

Some songs which are pretty good get boring just after few weeks when you hear them once in an hour.
Thats one reason why I've stopped listening to radio,
as I don't have cd player currently in my car and I'm too lazy to record anything to cassettes, I rather keep the radio silent than listen to it.
Unless I know that there is some program on where they play something else than the "powerplay"...

i dont mind pop music, as long as its catchy

thats just bad.

There are several reasons why most radio stations suck. Clear Channel, Infinity, and other corporations own a huge number of stations across the country and make formulated playlists (i.e. the same rock songs you hear in one city will be exactly the same songs you hear in another).

Another reason is the economics of making records. Many of the record execs are business people, not music people. They judge artists based on sales, not talent. They don't take the effort to develop artists anymore. They want a quick turn around on their product so they go for big singles and expensive videos. If an artist sells well, they keep them, milk a few singles and records out of them, and then drop them when they do poorly.

There are good radio stations and good artists out there, unfortunately you have to do more searching now than you did a decade ago.

However, I see the demise of the tradional AM/FM format as the opportunity for internet radio, satellite radio and private record stores. For music lovers it provides the motivation to become more creative and more active IF you want to hear good music in todays world.

I have stopped listening to traditonal radio about 4 years ago when I started to notice the decline in programming.

I would highly recommend you check out satellite radio. I have XM Radio and its pretty good. Dedicated channels to certain genres and no commericals.The programming is excellent. You will never hear a repeat of a song with a 24/48 hour range. Since I like edm I frequently listen to The System on XM Radio. Only catch is that you have to pay $10 a month. Small price to pay if you love music.

well, not really. i am sure my taste in music is the same as it has been 5 or 10 years ago. now and again, i listen to the proverbial cheese music, and depressive music. i still like stuff from staind and godsmack to brian mcknight and alicia keys. but are those type of music in the top 20. i don't know. all i know is the current top 20 is not at the same range as the artists i listed.

that is true. it took me a while to figure josh groben a couple of years ago. yes i like josh groben. flame me if you want. i noticed his music like around 2000/2001. it does take a while to find artists to your pleasing these days now. i don't know abot the "manufactured" bands. should we believe that?? i think some are and some aren't. i do know that some managers force singers to edit or sing songs that the singers do not like or is not part of their style. should we believe that today's current top40 is basically manufactured by record producers to try to sell some image to us?


p.s. i think ClearChannel is another version of 'Big Brother'. they're everywhere on the radio. they own 75% of the radio stations here in NO.

maybe i should invest in satellite radio. the thing is what is a radio like without the commercials and channel switching. with satellite radio, you would probably be stuck on one radio station forever, because they're always playing something you like.

That's why I never listen to the radio anymore in the first place...

i have two radio stations where i live.. yea they play euro dance music and house. not too bad.. at least its not hippidy hopp... eurodance = what i hear in the disco so u get kinda used to it and mostly think of the last weekend or the coming one.

what i really love about tranceaddict is how people on here bash "POPular" music, yet they realize that trance itself is "POPular".

in terms of EDM, trance is what the masses will like. its simplistic cheesy music made to get a quick reaction from people by simple supersaw synthesizers with arpeggio strings.

dont diss pop music; especially if you listen to trance.

Actually I listen to quite a few different stations. Depends on my mood. For example, sometimes Ill tune into World Zone ( which plays ethnic world music) or sometimes Ill tune into Ngoma ( which plays African music ) or sometimes I listen to some XM Classics ( for my classical music fix). Its really nice becuase you can hear so many differnt sytles of music that you would never hear on your local radio stations.

They also have the playboy channel But i dont subscribe to that. I prefer watching it on cable
