Authorities Checking DJs who play from CDrs

Apparantly and im not 100% if this is true, a club in Wales (called Liquid) was targetted by some kind of Music Authority demanding to be shown proof that the DJs who used CDrs that night actually purchased them or obtained them legitimatley!

Crackdown on DJ's using burned Mp3s? or just a jobsworth being nosey?

if that is the case, then 80% of TA deejays should be afraid....lmao

about time its starting to get a crackdown

this is the loop hole which a lot of dj's get round

rofl, it seems theyve been given a deadline of 14 days to prove the legitimacy of the CDrs

much like the producer bit in the driving licence etc

I cant see them coming to Liverpool any time soon, most of the lads in town work with vinyls and have their own labels anyway so own the rights to most of the tunes. Not sure if dodgy CDrs are a big problem eleswhere

as long as you STILL own a copy of the original recording on CD or vinyl that's legit (i.e. not buying it, copying to CDR then selling on the vinyl) you must have the recording still.

I am a resident dj at several liquids across the uk, including a large one in wales.
As far as im aware, the prs/trading standards/the mcps havent been into the welsh one recently (certainly not on my night) but its happened in others to me and others.
You may be referring to a recent case in another liquid where a dj was fined BIG time for having a whole series of album compilations on cdr which he didnt have the originals of. A letter was sent out to the many venues owned by the company warning of such things.
Yes it is true- becoming increasingly common too.
Its nothing new however- they have been doing random checks for years- standard procedure is they confiscate offending material and give you a set amount of time (7-14 days) to produce the originals. No big deal really.
To the letter of the law, you cannot copy it to use in a public performance capacity-you must play from the original source- i have double checked this with the relevant organisations too. However, this isnt always applied due to practicalities- there is a certain amount of leway given and this is outdated somewhat.
Long story and lots of crap to do with the legal side of things and some large grey areas still- but bottom line is, if you play illegal material out, then it serves you right when you get fined big time.
No excuse.

edit: do you have a link to your source on this>?

lmao very much like that me thinks! fair play @ the end of the day like has been said you know what you are doing whilst playing them you know theres a complete crackdown but if you burn them of your vinyl how will they tell if its legit??

which liquid in wales was it? the one in wrexham?

Out of curiousity, how would you prove a Promo CD-r is legit?
If the artist gave you the equivalent of a white label vinyl, so a CD with no markings, then these people confiscated it believing it to be a copy, how would you prove its not?
And here's another question, apart from your word how would they know if you are playing your own material on a CD-r? If you have your own new track on a CD-r, how would they know it isn't someone elses?

Sorry if these are stoopid questions, I don't know much about these areas.........

Not stupid questions, I'd love to know this as well.

no official source, but someone posted in another forum saying

"mate was playing liquid in wales, some number cruncher came in asking to see all cd'rs, been asked to prove he has bought all the tunes on the cd'rs within the next 14 days.

first i heard of this, can go fuck - 90% of stuff i play are advanced cd'rs from producers and labels"

posted by some guy called Tom Ferguson ???

I buy a lot of my mp3s from websites, but lately iv been taking my vinyl i receive on promo from www.feedbackmagazine.com and rip them to cdr/mp3 style formats.. because I prefer to take my music in Final Scratch when traveling. Im not sure how they would target someone like myself, because I could have 0 proof, unless they came to my house and checked my online order comfirmations and checked all my vinyl stock lol
