i've seen this question many times...go with minidisc. i know mdlp2 is at 128kbs so regular must be 128*2 something like 256 or something.
i've seen this question many times to ... go with MP3 Cd PLayer
I-River 250 (or rio volt 2 , both the same) is the best one right now
I would say, take both in a mix.. I just resently bought a Freecom Beatman Mp3 Player.. It's the size of a minidisc, it plays mp3s, but not on memory cards but on mini cds, which have 185 mb capability ===>> 4 hours music.. here's a pic

for your beatman cd player, you'll need a burner tho.

guess everybody has burners now but its kind of a pain for me to turn on my comp and make cds and stuff. guess i'm just lazy. and Neo, its really up to you. The pros and cons should be pretty obvious.

I have a MD, but now going to buy me a nice small MP3 player.. the minidisc is just to much trouble making md's... it's writing speed is x1 (just like tapes) so it takes shitload of time to make them.. with a good MP3 player i can upload lots songs really fast, and it's really not hard to do it.
.................... MD is the way to go.........
Well I just bought a minidisc after pondering the same question.... Heres some info on why I think you should go the minidisc route:
You asked if its going to be around much longer, well its been around for quite a while now and according to how popular it is in Asia, you can bet it will be around for a long time to come.
MD Player's advantage over MP3 Player
1. MP3 has to be edited by computer. Solid state MP3 portable players cannot execute real time recording. MD, on the other hand, can record from any source (digital/analog) through just an optic fiber, coax line, or microphone.
2. MP3's sound quality is far more inferior than MD. MP3 compresses sound data in 1:10 destructive ratio which may result in the loss of sound quality (encoding at 128kb sampling rate or below). MD uses ATRAC technology to compress sound in 1:5 ratio by eliminating noises and inaudible frequencies, preserving the dept of sounds. MiniDisc can actually sound better than a CD. MP3 cannot.
3. The various existing MD equipments, along with the removable colorful discs and labels, be can be easily individualized to show different personal styles. MP3s uses non-removable media, hard to be personalized.
4. MiniDisc equipments' accessories are easily and inexpensively obtained audio accessories whereas MP3 players require expensive computer accessories (such as RAM) for best performance.
Imagine how easy it is for example to record live DJ sets to your MD, just connect the unit and press record. You can record interviews, lecutres... You can set track stops on long live sets that you record onto the disc so you can hop around....
But truly the selling point for me is sound quality, the mp3 players can't compete with the sound. And of course each blank MD disc is re-recordable and Sony claims that there is no degredation of sound after 1 million recordings...

AS I don't have a burner (so NOT all people have burners these days!
) and my computer is not that good and stable, I chose for a MD player about one year ago. since then I also have an audio cd recordable/rewritable, but still I prefer to record with the MD player. It's so easy in use, much more stable than any other form of recording (except DAT probably, but that was too expensive for me). Also, MD's are cheap and you can use them over and over again. Quality is good.
I have two MDplayers: a big one, to put on my stereo or my mixer. And a portable one, but that one doesn't record. The big one was about 125 US dollars, the small one was about 41 US dollars (thanks to that currency site!)

you poor basterd
I have the Sony MZ-R900.

mmmmmmm nice, it's Sony's latest MD player, it records aswell and the thing I love about it is Sony have brought out a new format called MDLP (MiniDisc Long Play) and you can use normal monidiscs and record 4 times the capacity of a standard MD, 5 hours 20 mins on an 80 min MD
Obviously the downside is that the MDLP format is not backward compatible with standard MD players
I had an mp3 player before, the problem with them is this, if you get one with a ahrd drive, you try and not get corrupt mp3's when the unit gets the slightest bit of vibration... if it uses CD's, the batteries tend to last only a few hours... (my sony with the rechargable and one AA duracell lasts 60+ hours) and also they are huge (too big for me), and last of all if they use solid state memory cards they are bloody expensive and small in capacity.
Plus it's Sony so it is QUALITY! and carrying around a couple of MD's is so much easier than CDR's.
So IMO I'd stick with MD, MD is here to stay and stay it will.
Hee Eye-Riz, were can you find mds with no recording function for 41 dollars (rond de 100 gulden).. i searched pretty good and all mds with recording function are EXPENSIVE!!.. about.. 200 dollars (500 piek).. I can't believe that with no recording function it makes a 159 dollar differcence.. Well I'm satisfied with my Freecom beatman.. it's not too expensive, 130 dollars

I got it from De Grote En (translated in English 'the big one
)
It was a chain of stores located in the eastern part of Holland.
BUT, bad news: they went bankrupt last year...
(I can imagine that it was because of all the special offers they had!)
