hey europeans and silly germans

Below is a snipet from an Amerian show Family Guy: (Yes that is a talking dog, just ignore that part.)

linkage

While it's obviously intended for comedic value, I wondered; Are they really like that in Germany? I heard that Russians refuse to admit defeat for the Afghanistan war.

There is an element of truth to that clip, but it's not because they refuse to admit defeat. It's because the people actually did a really good job of cleansing their history of something terrible. Think of how many Germans were involved with the Nazi party, and how quickly the nation changed after defeat.

There are strict anti-Nazi laws today in Germany which can get you arrested merely for speaking fondly of the Hitler years. Yes, there are Germans who secretly still harbor positive sentiments for the Nazi party, and there is a small but vocal neo-Nazi movement. But the real reason for the way they act is because they don't want to remember those times, rather than refuse to admit defeat.

(Now...do I agree with the way that it's handled today? No. It's anathema to an American who strongly supports free speech. But it's not my country, and the Germans seem to support what has been done and how it has worked.)

Actually, in these days a new German film is drawing record crowds to the cinemas. It's called "Der Untergang" (roughly translated: "The End") and portrays the last 12 days with der Fhrer in his bunker. On danish TV I saw some interviews with people who had just seen it, and they all stated that it was important to remember the events of that period. One woman said that immediately after the war, the Germans felt like victims because an evil man had come along and led them astray, but that in the 70s and 80s the general perception changed to thinking that the Jews were the victims.

Ouch I have to agree though if the Russians were defeated in Afghanistan, then we certainly were in Vietnam, what would make the "Untergang" situation any different for either, they both had to retreat and it wasn't for lack of effort in Vietnam that's for sure.

There isn't alot of truth to that...The Germans are extensivly taught to remember their history and to not make the mistakes of the past twice. In school they are taught the German history and all over Germany you can see signs spray-painted onto walls etc... saying Nazis Raus! (Nazis get out) There are many anti-facism marches etc. even though there is the occasional Neo-Nazi rally. It is pretty much a sin to call someone a nazi that is not a neo-nazi. People don't usually hang german flags outside their houses like in the U.S. for fear of being labelled a nazi. There are countless museams dedicated to the nazi times and the attrocities of those times and you can still go visit the concentration camps and SS prisons. Also, my german host brother was young once and saw a documentary on the nazi times. My host-father and him were outside raking leaves or something and the father told the son to go do something. The son quickly responded with "Ja Ja mein Herr." and was immediatly sent inside so the father could tell him how you can't do that and why. So no, it isn't pushed back where no one learns or hears about it.

The reason why it was cleansed so well is because the members of the nazi party burned documents and tried to get rid of any traces of what really happened (I think I understood what you said correctly).

But yes there are still some people that thought everything was better during nazi times and that generation is still alive, albeit that most of them are in retirment homes because they are like 80.

I thought the cartoon was pretty funny though. I love family guy!
