Good Midi Controller (Keyboard) ?????

I have Reason right now and I want a keyboard/midi controller... What's a good cheap one??

Midi Keyboards

PC/Mac Evolution MK-125 79.95 Evolution www.evolution.co.uk
A mini keyboard with full size keys, this is a handy inputting device for bass and lead lines, and the included Dance Station software is great too.

PC/Mac Evolution MK-261 149.95 Evolution www.evolution.co.uk The MK-261 delivers everything you'd expect from a controller keyboard with style, and the included Sound Studio sequencer makes this a bargain.

PC/Mac Studiologic SL-61 159.95 Arbiter www.arbitergroup.com No bundled software, but superb key action make this five octave board clearly aimed at the competent player. Highly recommended.

PC/Mac Korg N364 899 Korg UK www.korg.co.uk
Some nice sounds but showing its age in terms of editing and control, and expensive for what you get

PC/Mac Korg N5EX 725 Korg UK www.korg.co.uk
Good range of sounds but the editing power doesnt go as far as youd think. Lagging behind the competition

PC/Mac MK-61 99 BCK www.bck.co.uk
This is one of the cheapest five-octave keyboard's going, and it's impressively sturdy and easy to control - definitely worth a look.

PC/Mac BCK MK-61 149.95 BCK www.bck.co.uk
A great five octave keyboard on its own terms, but there are slightly cheaper models out there that offer somewhat more in terms of features.

PC/Mac BCK MIDI PRO 149.95 BCK www.bck.co.uk
Four octave model sporting an excellent control interface but a bit of a lacking action. Not one for the serious performer, but great for simple note inputting.

PC/Mac Roland PC-300 139.83 Roland UK www.roland.co.uk
One of the best keyboards we've seen for the money, featuring excellent key action and unique in that it connects via USB.

take your pick, all the best

sweet, more great info from dj pete...

these keyboards all sound decent right? heh, i mean have some nice synth instruments etc.. ?

Posted by BKLN2LA on Nov-14-2001 03:14:

so all of these are velocity sensitive and stuff??

Posted by Pjotr G on Nov-14-2001 08:58:

If you wanna use it as a controller, maybe it's cheaper to pick up a second hand DX-7, they don't go for much I think these days, they are built like a tank, they have all the functions you need (aftertouch, velocity, pitch bend, modulation what am I forgetting) and you even get a cool Frequency Modulation synth.
(I use one)

Wink

Hey DJ Pete, im currently using a YAMAHA PSR-730 as my contoller, but im looking for a new one, to use wiv Reason, fruity, Cubase etc. The latency between Cubase, and my midi contoller is not very good, so I hope to get a Audigy wich has improved ASIO drivers..

What setup do u recommend for a amateur producer, to make decent productions????

well the gear that you have there is great for a amateur apart from
Cubase, if you were to start adding some hardware Synths with Cubase
thats getting into the Pro setup

a good midi contoller would be the Kenton Control Freak or the
Phat Boy

eventually I'm gonna start adding hardware and stuff...

would it be bad to invest in a Korg Karma? being that i'm a beginner...

btw I dont know how to play the piano...

them two Evolution midi keboards have some software
bundle
so you can learn

it says

"Music Teacher comes complete with a range of lessons to get you started. The teacher will show you the way, giving you the option of learning notes, rhythm or both and showing your mistakes. Like any teacher the Evolution Music Teacher will give you a score and comment on your performance. You can even choose which teacher you want - from Mr.Easy through to the very strict Mr.Guru! Learning to play the keyboard has never been so much fun!"

*drool*
Damn getting a rig like that takes a couple of decades and releases

Anyways, the korg karma is basically a korg triton with some more functions, personally I don't think it's that bad

Plus I'd like to add that not being able to play the piano (e.g. read notes n stuff) isn't a big deal. You'll still need keys becuz they are good for just tryin out melodies, chord patterns, or trying out sounds as you tweak them. I can't play the piano, but the keyboard is essential in my setup!

Posted by BKLN2LA on Nov-29-2001 08:59:

ok so lets say i get a MIDI keyboard (evolution), i'd still be able to ask for a pretty good gift for xmas.... what should i get? any opinions?

Posted by Peter Campbell on Nov-29-2001 09:51:

how much are you willing to pay
and what do you need or would like?

Posted by BKLN2LA on Nov-29-2001 10:50:

i really dont know what i need or like... i could spend up to lik 700-maybe 1 thousand...

Posted by BKLN2LA on Nov-29-2001 10:51:

i probably should stick to Reason for a while...
