Team has relationship with Spanish giants Associated Press SALT LAKE CITY -- Utah's Major League Soccer expansion team announced Saturday it will be called Real (pronounced RAY'-al) Salt Lake, hoping it enjoys similar to success to a European club with the same name. Owner Dave Checketts said the Utah team has a relationship with Real Madrid, but no official affiliation. "We talked a lot about mascot names -- names you can't tell if it's arena football or indoor lacrosse," Checketts said. "I wanted a soccer name. I wanted to make sure that when people heard it around the country they knew that it was soccer. And I kind of liked the way RSL rolls off the tongue." The team's colors will be red with blue and gold trim. The red jerseys will have "Real Salt Lake" written across the front and the white jersey will read "Salt Lake." Checketts, general manager Steve Pastorino and new coach John Ellinger were joined by local officials and Gov. Olene Walker during the announcement at the University of Utah's Rice-Eccles Stadium, where the MLS team will play its first two or three seasons. Checketts said negotiations are still in progress for a location to build a soccer-only stadium for the MLS team. "I want to play here for a couple of years, but then we need a home," Checketts said. "We're going to have a plan in place by the end of the year." The announcement drew more than a thousand fans, who cheered the name when it was announced and began chanting "Re-AL Salt Lake." A huge banner with the team's crest was hung from the south bleachers, although it took several minutes to display the banner because the wind kept getting under it on the blustery afternoon. The team will start adding players in the expansion draft after the playoffs next month. More players will join in the regular draft, and RSL will officially become the 12th MLS team when it begins play next spring. |
