forum search

Not sure whats going on with it, but it looks to be inoperational / disabled.

This is an important feature which I beleive needs to be fixed / reactivated as it does help the noobs like me that use it

with a huge site like this it takes time.

here's a suggestion...stop friggen with the "search" function...it was fine for 3 years...now it's all messed up....not sure why Swamper even messed with it.

Posted by RobbieBegic on Oct-22-2004 00:18:

well, its kind of working at the moment..

Uhh... because multiple simultaneous searches done in succession cause bottlenecks forum wide resulting in you waiting forever for a thread to show up or for your reply to get posted. There is heavy duty disk I/O going on when you have 3+ million posts - even with indicies.

Thus, searches are done on a copy of the database (done at 5AM EST) so that bottlenecking does not occur and everyone is happy. It is not 'messed up'.

See this never happened before....

There seems to have been a slight problem with the tranceaddict Forums database. -- If it says 'Too Many Connections' we already know about the problem and are working hard to resolve it.
Please try again by pressing the refresh button in your browser - but wait 30 seconds.

We apologise for any inconvenience.

It takes at least 10 trys before search works....THEN...when it does the results are not all there....it says wait 30 seconds...well i can wait 10 minutes and the same message pops up...

All i am saying is that 2 months ago there was no problem with the search...now when u tinker with it everyone has problems...if it doesnt work then disable it...dont u waste more resources when people get an error message then keep trying? as oppose to searching and getting the results right away?...make no sense.

i say leave well enough alone....bird in the hand.

I don't think that is swampers intent to mess up the search, in fact I am sure he is trying to get the best method running. I am just wondering if you know anything about databases and the search? when you got so many people searching and posting and viewing it kills the speed of the board.

I say we put nekked girl dancing banners on the site to help pay for more uber l33t servers. or throw a benefit concert.

i know it's not his intention...all i am saying is that it worked perfect before...but now that he is fiddling with it, it's messed up....thats why i said leave well enough alone.

i PMed a friend and asked him if he has probs searching and here is what he said::

bro -- the TA search function has been sucky from the get-go but ever since swamper made those supposed 'improvements' it's a mess -- stuff that i've succesfully searched for in the past doesn't appear anymore and half the time i get error messages...

Posted by jon on Oct-22-2004 16:13:

there wernt as many posts, and users in the past that there are now, im sure if swanper wanted to he could reset the search to defult, then you will see the forums lock up totaly.

as boomer187 said do you know anything about databases?

i dont care about knwoing about databases.....makes no difference to me....

The search worked fine 2 months ago...are you telling me that there was that big of a jump in users in that time to cause a problem?

You really are clueless, if there was nothing wrong with the search, would swamper have changed it? cock

im saying it is really really really tough to get a properly working search function with such a large database, and with such large traffic. and then tack onto that the fact that swamper uses his free time to do this crap for us all. if I was him Id say funk searhcing, I need to drink.

also, the search function was working perfectly for me. Of course it was at night and no one was on.....which is prolly what was happening for you when it was working properly. If you knew at least a lil something about how it works you would agree that it could always use improvement. but oh well.

funk it. as long as we agree swamper is trying his best, we can't do anything else.

now I need a beer.

It would make a difference as maybee you would understand how the server has to cope with acessing the same database for both people browsing the forums and people using the search engine, all at the same time,(currently there are around 500 odd people are using the forums at this moment in time, either viewing thread or searching, which all cause the forums to acess the database)

The two ways to improve things are either buy a faster server (and whos going to pay for that?) or change the way the search engine works.

Swamper has been improving the search engine for alot more than 2 months...
