Just some questions about producing..

Just had some basic questions.

First: When you use lets say a kick sample do you run it through a wave editor like Cool Edit before you use it or only when necessary, is this a common practice for producers?

Second: Compressors are supposed to "louden" the track and give energy to it. But most of the time all that ends up happening is the output starts going into redzone and everything starts distorting which in the end forces me to use soft clippers and compressors to make the sound softer

And finally, im thinking of using Cubase, is there much of a need to go from FL Studio to a program like Cubase? I used a demo once but i dont know if its worth it. I mean in terms of variety, sound output,etc.

1) I probably shouldn't answer since I'm new myself, but I don't do this so far. I have more important stuff to learn apart from getting perfect no-noise samples.

2) What's the question; how to make sure this doesn't happen?
Don't compress the whole track and it won't

And finally, FL studio seems to be perfectly fine for pro-productions. According to himself, all Octagen/Re:Locate productions and remixes are FL Studio only, and I think the same applies to Ozgur Can.

1) Every sample I've ever used has had some amount of pre-processing in cooledit.
2) It depends on the mixing. A very well mixed track will need almost no compression. A compressor shouldn't be relied on at all; if you're using it to fix serious loudness problems then you need to work on your track at the mixing level.
3) Try out as many sequencers as you can and then use the one you like the feel of the most. Lots of excellent producers use Fruity/Reason; I personally use something shittier than both of those =P I'm checking out Cubase soon, but really it comes down to what you enjoy working in.
