travellin' & workin' abroad

Nothing like the end of a relationship to bring on a severe case of wanderlust! It's like an itch I just can't scratch. Though I�m happy enough in my job, I just feel this need to go abroad. Part of me really wants to just travel around Asia � an �avian influenza� tour through Laos, Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia (sorry, some microbiologist humor), another part feels like I should find some sort of job in Europe or maybe go back to school and so some sort of overseas program � probably public health. I�ve been reading up on this and researching some programs but I�m looking to you fellow TA�s for some ideas and tales of your wild or not so wild adventures while living (working, extended travel, or volunteering) overseas� and does anyone have any experience working on a foreign passport? I'm currently awaiting the renewal of my british passport.

I am saving right now to head out to europe for the summer. I just need to get away from the every mundane crap here.



As long as you konw what you want out of this trip and actually make a plan to do that, then go right ahead.

i lived on germany for a year as part of a study abroad programme. it was a lot of fun, but i never worked. if you have a british passport that will make it easier to work in the EU, as it is hard to just 'get a job' there. you should narrow it down, to exactly what you want to do etc. good luck

ahh yes, narrowing it down is the hard part! where were you living in germany?

Left South Africa when I was 19 to move to London, been here for 3 years now and love it, not gonna be going back

Traveling is the shit if you are single. I traveled the whole US for a year on a job. It was the shit too. I hit every state except alaska, and made big bucks while doing it. All i did then was store setups(wal-marts,office depot, home depot,cvs,walgreens,suzuki dealerships, stuff like that) I am going to get back into that kind of work except it will be stores and restuarants in airports. so this time i will probably get to work internationally.

me mum is british, so I got a british passport and moved over here, as the career/life prospects are MUCH better (plus I met a lovely woman )

I'm a Norwegian.
I have a girlfriend in Ecuador.
Right now I am studying in Australia.
The rest of my 4 semesters I will finish my degree in Argentina, with my girlfriend.


Been to Thailand 2 times, going there for the third time(10 days) in approx. one month.
The islands and beaches are increddible, it's BACKPACKERS HEAVEN, the worlds playground.
It's such an AWESOME place.


Been to Ecuador once, quite a mindfkuc if you're staying with some people who live their way...

Stayed in Malaysia once for a couple of days, I prefer Thailand to Malaysia actually... But I didn't get to try it out really...

Australia
Good but stay away from rural areas they suck.
(my view okay!)


Europe is ... friggin good.
(Especially Norway and Denmark, hehe)

I really want to go to europe for at least a month or two at the end of next year, figure do it while I'm young, go party Dutchie style at Innercity and Trance Energy............

I would also like to go to the far east - you know on some racketty train - last train to lhasa listening to some ambient music - and going to see buddhist temples . And i wouldnt mind doing the Azoires also - some diving in the crystal waters and laying on beaches etc.....

i just need to save alot of money.

that sounds awesome! what's the longest amount of time you stayed in thailand?

I hadn't thought too much about south america but i love ancient ruins and would love to see machu picchu in peru. I have seen some of the mayan ruins in mexico (from the touristy chichen itza to the quiet coba - totally rocked!!).

I've been to Canada tons of times, and i have been lucky enough to go to many other countries around the world before i was even 18.

My dad works for an airline (QANTAS), so that makes things easier

I definitely recommend you go travelling, it's one of the best things you can ever do in your life.

I hope to go to really exotic, out of the way places some day like Central America, Africa or something like that, to take me out of my comfort zone and really experience a totally different culture.

trains are good! i definitely want to spend some time visiting angkor wat... more of a hindu influence there but it doesn't matter to me. i just think ancient and not so ancient ruins are fascinating. one of my uncles lives up in yorkshire near rievaulx abbey - I love visiting that place, time to go back.

i hear ya! i'm lucky because my dad is british and, though he lives here in the states, we used to visit family almost every summer when i was a wee lassie. but i haven't really travelled on my own - did go to canada last summer by myself and had an awesome time. so that did it... i'm infected with the travel bug.

I definitely have to go travelling more before i get older and settle down, because it is very hard to do it once you get married, have kids etc

I need to go before 25 too, cos that's when my airline benefits run out...

I wanna go to greece to work! and live there forever but its so difficult!!!! To find a good paying job that is!! if u know what u want to do and have the skills for it DO it!! go for it now while u have no family!

yeah i also want to go to work in europe. I have been told that with my degree in hotel, resturant, and tourism that i should not have that hard of a time finding a job at a hotel somewhere in europe. I would love to go somewhere such as dk, norway, check republic, germany, or belgium. I cant wait to get free from the states. I dont feel like an american because i dont live for the american dream or for the luxuries that most americans do. People here judge u on if u have money or not and the gov will makes helth care a privelege not a right like it should be. I have been to europe a few times now and i feel so at home each time i go, im so pissed when i have to come back here.

i kinda know what you mean. I used to work in the corporate environment - it was always, who's driving what car, how new is your house, etc. i think i managed to blend in but i always felt a bit stifled. plus i was in it for the money. I'm much happier now 'cause i'm working in an interesting field even though the paycheck is substantially less. Living abroad does have its trade offs - higher taxes, might be more difficult to find a job... I'm not sure if i would want to live overseas permanently but I'll see what happens. Still not sure if I want to work, find a volunteer program, or go to grad school. Right now I'm reading a book called "The Global Citizen" which talks about different opportunities. I also read a great book called "Land of 1000 Hills, My Life in Rwanda." It's by an american woman who moved to Rwanda and has now lived there over 50 years. I've read books about the genocide there but it's interesting to read a more personal tale. And you realize how little one can survive on... We generally take so much for granted in the first world!
