copyright issues

I'm posting this in this thread because I figure you'd all know the answers to my questions. Can someone describe the copyright issues such as bootleg remixes, how and when to copyright your own work etc.

You can google the word "copyright" and "music" and find alot about this issue.
Basically, the safest thing to do is make sure you acquire sample clearance for "ANYTHING" that isn't your own. Its not difficult.
I am also awaiting clearance for my U2 remix (in my sig). ASCAP website is a good place to start...with their online inquiry/search tool they will tell you who owns the rights and which publisher holds the license/permission for the songs you sample. Then you can get in touch with the right people from there. Its easier than I thought.

As far as copyrighting your own stuff...I've heard a lot of debate about this. You can mail yourself your own work on CD-r and make sure it is time-stamped and sealed so that if you ever have to prove the authenticity of your work, you can prove it that way... you can register your works and pay something like $100 (I think that lets you do a whole CD). Its a personal choice. I'd GOOGLE for a more indepth look at this if I were you.
