Dunno Pockets (the root of some but not all evil)

THE POCKET
I'm convinced that the pocket was the ultimate root of consumerism. Long ago when we walked around in the buff, or at best, our loin cloths, we were not concerned with taking things home with us. In caveman days we would see a beautiful stone laying in our path and think to ourself "wow that is beautiful, I will walk this same path on my way home to marvel at the beauty nature provides me with."

And then someone invented the pocket. Probably a crude sown patch on your loin cloth, or maybe even a satchel attached to a string of deer sinew, that you could wear around your neck.(the purse) From that day forward we began to covet stuff. We would begin to take things out of it's natural environment and believe that since we had this pocket to transport it in, we deserved to take it home and claim ownership of it. And to show it off to friends as though it belonged to you.

Next came the pants. These pants now had FOUR pockets. 2 on each side and 2 in back. We could now fit MORE stuff. And though it was not socially acceptable for women to wear pants in that day, they did have the purse. This was the beginning of the evolution of the consumer. Back pockets gave way to wallets, and purses gave the women a place to carry their make-up around so they could make sure they looked pretty ALL THE TIME. This is where we lost the natural female. And now today women wear pants AND have a purse which explains their desire to shop much more than the man. They carry their makeup, their cell phones, their car keys, their checkbooks, and sometimes they carry purses within their purses.

AND THEN CAME ..... the CARGO PANTS! I mean, the name alone suggests that you are an airplane full of STUFF! 6 POCKETS!!! A maximum amount of places to put stuff. Take into that equation a jacket and a backpack and you have a very large amount of space in your immediate-personal-vacinity (I call it IPV) that you think you own.

I noticed myself the other day with my pockets full of STUFF!! It really freaked me out man! I could hardly move much less sit down. I had to lighten the load. I threw everything away. Fuck it!! My cell phone, my pager, my lighter, my cigarettes, my money, my change, my phone numbers, car keys, an old cassette, a piece of bubblegum, 2 matchsticks, an ink pen, my credit card, 3 flyers, a couple of balls of lint, and a pumpkin seed. There might have been more, I can't remember. But it's okay. None of the stuff was mine. You never really own anything ever. For real though. Think about it. You never really own ANYTHING EVER. (with the exception of your body, but I'm suspicious that my body is on loan as well)

You have a very amusing, yet intriguing and good/valid point.

The kangaroos must be the ultimate consumer of austrialia then?

Ya know, the Kangaroo is one of the only other animals to have a pocket. Also the Koala, the Wombat, the Tazmanian Devil, and Oppossums.

However, these animals use their pockets to sustain life, and I think that's noble.

We need pockets and bags to "sustain" our lives too.

oh shit, i lost my keys, i wish i had pockets to put them in so i wouldnt lose them

damn all this coins and bank cards, someone should make a thingy where i can put this shit in.

pocket = probably one of the best inventions ever.

Okay that's a good point, but money is evil. If the pocket was never invented, we might be living in a world without money.

edit-

This just ocurred to me.
On top of that, if we didn't have money, we most likely would not have people stealing. And therefore, you wouldn't have to worry about carrying car keys around, because you wouldn't have to lock your car.

fuck pockets.

would you rather have a barter system. A barter system doesnt work, take economics to find out why.

Stealing is a part of nature of people anyways. If we didnt have money, people would be stealing chickens or something.

if you dont like pockets, sew all your pockets closed. Dont drive because you dont have any place to put your keys and dont carry money with you because you have no pockets. do get a cell phone either.

do have a backpack or any equivalent bag because those are equivalent to larger pockets. dont travel, either. have a nice life without pockets.

I would rather have a natural system. I would rather grow what I need to eat and build what I need to live in.

Stealing arizes out of people's need to have something. They either steal what they want, or they steal something they can sell in order to get what they want.

First of all, if there's no money, you can't sell something you stole.

Secondly, if there's nothing you want except food, you don't need to steal anything.

The point of my thread is that pockets are what originally caused us to want ownership over things in the first place. If you realize you don't own anything in the first place, then someone can't steal it from you.

K, your right. If you dont own anything, someone will. Thats the way of the world. If you dont mark your territory, if you dont stamp your name, it isnt yours. All the hard work you do isnt yours. Someone will come along and proclaim that your work is theirs. See the problem?

you should take economics, i wont bother explaining what the problems with that are.

So if i understand what you are saying. You assume that the world exists without the need for an exchange system. Even without currency and simple barter, people still have needs. Therefore they will still steal because they need something.

And the point is, if you dont own anything, do you expect to lease everything? Like toothbrushes, cups, towels, etc. I assume the answer is no. Even if you do, you still need money to lease, so then you would be screwed.

Ah, but this view only arises out of the way this world has turned out. I am talking about a world that may or may not have existed if the belief that we need to own things had never come into existence.

See you are locked into the belief of your views and opinions that exist because of the way the world is today. I am talking about a world that does not exist but once was a possibility.

In short:

You are living in reality,
And I am living in fantasy land.
