Melody or Design?

Im quite keen to find out what different people's methods are when it comes to production, which is always your main basis to a new track? The Sound design first or the melody first?

Thanks All

Melody and structure first, everything else comes later.

Harmonics(melodies, pads etc), synths, bass, sfx.

Ive tried thinking about that when i first started and realized i kept debating over n over what sound i need and this and that and in the end , ended up with shit since i was about the sound design. Now its melody, structure, bass.

ALso for me If i start out with the beat and percs, i always end up with a prog song heh.

Yeah, i usually start out with the kick, bass & perc. Then get the melody down and maybe reshuffle and tweak around that...

get the melody / bass / pads in, then get a good beat / percs rhythm goin, play around with a few breakdown ideas then start sequencing

I have no special list I check as I progress when I make music. Sometimes I make some groovy drums, sometimes I make a melody, sometimes just a feeling...

I usually start with the klimax or the break.

If I start with the klimax, I first make a drum-pattern, a bass-pattern and then make a melody around the bass.

If I start with the break I make a Pad-pattern and then I make a melody around that pattern. Works fine to me.

I've never learned how to do music production properly and thats probably why I'm crap at it.

I get a riff / melody and record that first - either chords or the lead then fill in with basslines and generic kick / hi hat to get the basic rhythm going then fill it out from there replacing the generic kick and hi hat with something less boring.

I also save my files as different names every so often too just in case I want to go back to a previous version.

R.

melody + chords first. usually try to put down as many melody / chord ideas as possible, and choose the strongest 2 or 3

then kick + bassline, percs + rhythm synths, arrange, listen, tweak, listen, tweak, etc.

then mix kick + bass, mix other bass, mix percs, mix the rest

Always melody. In my songs it is the most important thing. I give a crap about sound, I give a crap about structure, I only try to make the melody that gives the tune a certain mood I want. I add pads or saw ( to compliment the main melody with a second melody), then I do a few sample breaks to experiment with what feel I want to further achieve, and how to manage that uplifting sensation.

Then I start building the track, sound still crappy, no fx, no decoration, just putting the ground bricks together. When I have a structure I find good. Good intro, good break, main and outro, then I start decorating, sound still crappy. I add some extra melodies and shitty sounding synths, just to play with ideas. Add some extra layers here and there, play with the drums and percs.

Then, when the melodies and strucutre is done, then I start thinking of the sound. I fire up the JP8080 and start playing around with it, I fire up a couple of VST's and start playing around with those. I'll always do main and second melody first, catching that mood, then from there every sound will compliment that mood in the song.

The thing is, trying to work on sound and melody at the same time just doesn't work for me. I always end up with a shitty melody, and often shitty sound as well. It just blocks all the creativity and potential. Take it one step at a time, and be patient that is the trick (for me :P )

Kickdrum.. rhythm.. bass.. FX.. Build Up.. leads.. breakdown.. outro

i usually have all the percs done and set as good as i possibly can then whack a bassline down and improvise my leads and pads around the key note of the bassline. most of my leads and especially the pads i do (i like em epic and detuned) are based around moded scales and i can see where tiesto pillaged a lydian scale for the pad in urban train! lydian comes up alot. its easy to remember, you can play it on guitar up against the headstock (so no barring required) etc.

when im writing music with other guitarists ill tap out a basic rhythym, agree with the other players what key to start in and then we all jaaam!
