Which would you prefer
The DJ Playing his own individual, Unique Style/set
Or
The DJ playing what he is told to play?
*strokes chin*
i would prefer a dj to play his/her own style as long as it compliments the mood of the night being held.
it depends on alot of things i guess. If you have to play the opening set you cant exactly drop 3am main room bangers, even if you want to, but you can still play a signature unique styled set.
i think a good dj is one who is versitle and flexible, but can still manage to pull off their own individual style - this, i believe, encompasses being able to play a set that suits the night/occasion/genere (even if its not your usual preference) whilst not being a jukebox.

naturally, his own style.. if he isnt suited to that event, he shouldnt play there, should he?
no one should change their style for anyone.. if that were the case, then say good bye to individuality.
A good night, and a good DJ consist of the happy medium IMO.
A DJ comes in with a known style, so the crowd goes to their show expecting a certain style or feel to the music, but each city has it's own vibe and reacts differently to different styles. A good DJ should be able to pick up on that and play whatever gets the crowd moving.
I agree but i guess it must be hard for DJ's to play thier desired style and build up a reputation that they are known for without stepping on too many toes in the process!!
I say i would like to see the DJ play what the club wants in thier own individual way... but being recognised for focusing on his own unique style and form.
own unique style..
when a DJ playing his own style, it usually shows how versatile he/she is and how wide his/her knowledge in music is..
i reckon to play a mixture of different genres and still keeping a signature sound and all the while be recognised as a trance DJ is
by no means a small feat!
playing a house set in a trance night may sound eclectic, but it doesnt help gaining crowd unless there's some devout followers behind him/her..
PvD can play house, prog, breaks, hardstyle and escape with little to no damage because his signature style can still be heard..
Marco V was told to play hard trance @ Pharmacy, instead he play prog all the way to tech trance...
i think playing to the crowd while keeping a signature sound is neccessary to gain those essential followers, only when theres enough followers/fans .. the DJ can play whatever and the crowd will still follow!!

marco v is known to play some prog tunes, have you heard is recent 3CD? First disc is mainly prog!
I have a very unique style in that i love to blend all elements of trance into the one set, so a bit of prog, uplifting, driving, tech and psy. But it's proving very hard to convince promoters that the sound will work.
I strive to play unique sets, and ive never really had a bad set with crowd reaction, but I still have trouble proving this to promoters, promoters seem to want the safe bets.
