Should they just cancel the dj mag top 100?

I hear apparently that it should be out tomorrow but I mean look what we have created, a fucking monster people. Deejays now send emails begging people to vote for them and now it is validation for whoever wins it, to hype it for the next year and make as much damn money as possible off it. Originally it was just to see what the public was thinking but now it has become the victim of its own success. So here is my question, should they stop it or not? why or why not?

Posted by itsTrueSonic on Oct-27-2004 20:05:

it's all in the glory of big corporation, big business. it keeps the money rolling in all the clubs.

but i think the dj100 is a big help for many clubs around the world who do not have access to the big names in the EDM business. clubs can look at the list, and see which djs are hot or not. a known example would be christopher lawrence. i have seen more us stops for him since his name has been appearing more in the dj100 list the past couple of years. the list gives the small djs an opportunity to make some money outside their home countries.

I got spammed in my mailbox as well by various DJ's to vote for them. Most of the DJ's that spammed I don't like anyway, didn't how how they got my emailaddress. The DJ Mag Top 100 for me is nothing but a popularity poll. They can continue it, but they need to change it to "most popular dj" instead of "best dj".

Posted by torontotrance on Oct-27-2004 20:08:

but does'nt the top 15 just result in overhype. I mean Tiesto ran with the top spot the last two years and he made a ton of money but I'm tired of seeing press for deejays saying he finished 3rd. I mean it does that validate you? I thought we judged a deejay on his output, not his placing in a publicity competition.

Posted by noikeee on Oct-27-2004 20:09:

I don't think they have any intention to stop it, after all it gives fame to the magazine. But I agree with the two previous posts, while it isn't by any means a good representation of dj'ing skills, it is a good representation for clueless promoters to know what popular dj's to get. And yes it should have "MOST POPULAR" glowed into the title, preferencially with a twice as bigger font size and in bold.

*edit* for clueless promoters to get not to fet what in hell is wrong with my keyboard today?

I M P O S S I B L E
but u are right...I received an e-mail from a Dj that i didn't know about him ask me to vote him.

That's ur opinion.

I don't really care if they keep releasing it or not, it doesn't mean anything anyway.

Posted by Zombie0729 on Oct-27-2004 20:15:

we're the only ones who know so much about DJ's. When i bring friends out they don't go, oh i love how smooth a dj's sets are, or how much they play with a song. They go, oh he's #3 ? Damn! This is gonna be a sick night huh!?! The hype can be a good thing because otherwise they are just another DJ to anybody else. There would be 100's of DJ's without a place in the world, and this just allows people to see who has the biggest fan base. You can play with the question 'why is he # X' forever

Most of the people who vote in those polls know next to nothing about DJ's. An actual, constructive list that values merit, worth, integrity, ingenuity and commitment in the profession of DJing would have very few trance DJs on it at all, if any.

I agree that the DJ Mag 100 is a popularity contest, but it does serve several purposes:

-for a person new to the scene, he/she can take a look at the list and find out who is the most popular dj's and decide if he/she wants to see them in person

-promoters use the results to help promote their parties - being able to say that you're bringing in the #1 dj as voted in DJ Mag will probably bring in some people that might not otherwise attend the event - most parties are money losers (which is contrary to what most of you think) and having one or two huge parties that make money help promoters to bring in the smaller, lesser known dj's

-it always provides good conversation/debate after it comes out

-it validates to each and every dj that makes the top 100 that they must be doing something right! obviously, it also allows dj's to charge more for each gig if they are high on the list - but what's wrong with making more money?

-you can look at the top 10 or top 50 or whatever and see what styles of edm seems to most popular - obviously it has been trance for the last several years - but you can see trends in the scene by watching the dj mag list

The poll is only about who's popular and has nothing to do with technical skills, but I think it does provide some insight in the scene and where its going.

when i say, 'we', i'm not refering to just people on TA... i'm refering to people who are serious about dance music in general.

LOL.. that list is a fucking joke. now with the super commercializm of trance, every year its gonna be one of the top trance jocks taking the cake. its no difference than the us top 100 billboard chart, does the #1 song mean its the 'best' song ? no, it simply means its the most played, bought and recognized song.. personally i dont give a fuck who is the most popular dj in the world is.. yeah its a plus for the djs that make it to the top 10 for their publicity and what not but it has NOTHING to do with the actual art of djing and the part that djs take in the EDM scene.. so to answer your question, fuck the list. that shit is getting old. its been old.

You mean people who vote for the top 100 'know stuff' about music? Is that what you mean? I dont understand your point. DJs like armin, tiesto, f corsten etc etc are always around the top ten. Therefore the people voting in these things must be largely ignorant fools.

Ive heard armin is the winner this year, It wouldnt surprise me. Does this mean hes the worlds number one dj though?

Posted by ctprincess on Oct-27-2004 20:47:

so how would you design a poll that would measure a dj's actual skill?

Posted by Plastick on Oct-27-2004 20:48:

Change the fking name of this top 100 poll thing to something more specific/less misleading.

Posted by dj_alucard on Oct-27-2004 20:49:

its a disgrace and has no bearing on me

fuck that u cant measure art. its just recognized. and to have a poll to measure a skill is retarded, thats why there are DMC competitions for turntablists.. stuff like that can work, but to have a poll for ppl to vote on the skill of a dj is irrelevant cuz u cant assume the regular masses have the knowledge of the art of djing to even make that judgement.

ok - so if they changed to DJ Mag's Most Popular DJ List it would make you all happy?

but, my question is still unanswered - how do you design a poll that measure's a dj's ability? and how would you keep the poll so that it doesn't turn into a popularity contest? and what would the purpose of such a poll be?

Those who know which DJ's are skillfull don't care about polls and rankings.

then why are we even having this discussion? if nobody cares about the dj mag poll, why do you care that its just a popularity contest?

Posted by searchdestroy_1 on Oct-27-2004 20:52:

I was very unimpressed this year with the amount of advertisements from some DJs about it. I thought it was very unnecessary as people will remember the sets and tracks you played as opposed to an advertisment.

The one DJ I did not see an advertisment for, I am almost positive will be the highest new entry in this years chart and he deserves it more than anyone else as his radio show on Party 107 is one of the best in the world right now.
