-- so my computer problem is worse than i thought...

Posted by stevebutabi on Oct-29-2004 23:23:

Unhappy so my computer problem is worse than i thought...

alright well it seems my lag problem is worse than a virus...

i reformated my computer and the problem hasn't gone away.

is there any way of finding out what piece of hardware is busted?

is it prolly the h/d, memory, etc? could it be dust?

Posted by itsTrueSonic on Oct-29-2004 23:27:

sounds like you have some hardware issues at hand...

is it the programs that you are loading into your computer?

if not, if you see your yellow light continuously flashing, it could be your memory not accepting the computer instructions as fast as it should be .. which is very rare...

either that, or it could be your hard drive not sending out instructions to the memory to be processed correctly. i say the safest solution is to get a new hard drive for safety sake,

No, I say the safest solution is to back up your shit to a CDR or to another computer right now, before it's too late. Then start experimenting.

well i think that's probably too late to advise him, since he just reformated his drive, so everything he had before, well he lost unless he backed it up..

Posted by stevebutabi on Oct-30-2004 02:24:

hehe yeah everything is gone but i backed up my docs on cdr before i reformated

that's all the good news though...

yes the yellow light flashes a lot, but not continuously... it does so in like 1 and a half second intervals... like i said there's a nasty lag, for example if i try to move the mouse around the screen it gets stuck every second

how can i be sure which piece of hardware is broken? i mean i don't want to buy a new h/d if it's actually the memory that's messed up

harddrive could be going (listen for dodgy HD noises) if sony can fix it under warranty ide let them do it cause u cud blag new components too - Bonus !

I'm not sure what OS you have but in XP it would be a good idea to go Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Events Viewer and see if there are any yellow/red icon entries. If something is underperforming it can be there.

Posted by stevebutabi on Oct-30-2004 20:06:

ok i checked out event viewer and there were some yellow icons...

scary thing is one of them says W32Time... could the w32 virus still be on my computer after reformating? sounds like what happened to you rooney.

i'd love to fix it w/o paying sony 500 bucks but i don't know if i can... if reformating can't fix it i'm in trouble

how old is the computer, sounds like it will be a faulty component, an a wouldnt get too worried about the W32... iv got loads of them on my laptop, am not sure wot it is but its not a virus!

dont u know anyone that could have a look at it 4 u instead of payin 500 quid to sony?

Posted by stevebutabi on Oct-31-2004 03:44:

yeah i've had a few people look at it... no dice

it's gotta be a faulty component like you said, hopefully sony will be able to fix it for less than 500

I'm going to say its a harddrive thats dying or ready to die... I've had this problem twice, the second time I knew I needed to buy a new HD as soon as it started happenning. If your mobo has SMART enabled(it might be disabled or you can't see it during startup) it would probably complain about the HD being ready to die. I don't know what kind of lag it is but if its hardware related and it seems to happen when retrieving data from the HD then that could be a good bet. Definitely back up all your data. Try another HD in there if possible(borrow a friends or take it out of an old comp), if it fixes the problem then you know that the HD is it, then buy a new HD. Just make sure you're %100 sure it's the HD, however, because I don't know what the problem is thats described so I don't know if it's what I'm thinking of.

Heh, something similar happened to my old comp, it was a piece of shit, so i didnt really care.

Anyways, it turned out that after the numerous punts it took from me, that the ram stick got dislodged and the comp was running with only a 16 MB ram stick (the other one was dislodged)....it took about 20 minutes to load up and then when i was typing, it was so laggy i wanted to cry

I figured out what was wrong, but since I have a new comp and i only use the old one for, well, a paperwieght, I just snatched the ram out of that one and put it into my new one.

/end pointless rant
