Tiesto In Concert II - Gelredome, Arnhem REVIEW

aside from a few piss pour mixes the track selection was excellent

highlights of the set for me:

02 armin vs. m.i.k.e. - pound
03 vercetti - in control
08 carl b - all day
09 primolux - the wall
10 dark alliance - genetic
25 john o'callaghan pres. mannix - mercury
27 ID
28 ID
49 ID
54 ID
56 ID
57 ID

27 definitely NEEDS ID - best track of the set!

I didnt catch most of the set, but from the apperance of the tracklist, Tiesto loaded this one up with twice as many of his own songs as he did last year. Im not saying playing your own music is bad, and at an event as big as TIC, its certainly necessary, but I dont see why he had to paly his own songs for a full 1/5 of the set (possibly a bit more or less). I tuned in around song 51 and found all the songs I had heard from that point on good except for a few exceptions, most notably
58. Marcos - Just for a Day.

The best song I heard was 60. Dark Alliance - Vibration. Tiesto threw in some really nice effects in on this tune by stretching out the time and some other nice work. This was a nice dark tune I wouldnt have expected from Tiesto.

The mixing was average to good, but as Ive said, I only heard roughly 10 songs. I was bit put off by his use of Universal Nation as a closer (let the song die already), and he didnt really build energy throughout the end of the set. He cut off one song at one point and really played a weak (though good) song before the guy from DJMag presented him with his award. But from what I heard, it was a decent set, a bit better than average as Ive heard from Tijs over the last 3 years or so. Tomorrow's set should be an interesting listen.

Idea

let me sum it up in two words: crap/hype

i saw a video stream of it, and thought it sucked, and not because i'm a tiesto basher, i'm going off the track selection...it's as if he took his tracks mixed it with the new stuff and called it a night. The only good part was Suburban Train, I like how he actually incorporated the choir into that one, because it made sense....it wasnt overdone, but the rest was just hard trance nonsense, that made u just want to tuneout or fall asleep ... The set had no personality..especially that its like 70 tracks...I mean if you want an event like this to be really special, you rack it down to say a 20-25 track set....and make it three nights, that way you dont compromise quality with quantity....instead he chose to make his set less personal, and threw around 70 tracks at everyone which was a bad idea in general, you have so many people there/a festival environment...your set just becomes a plethora of everything thrown in, just lacks structure. To me this was a money making scheme at the same time, with a merchandise booth...i mean jesus, at least try and not make it look like ur a sellout.

I don't know how people can review this without actually being there. I'm sure everyone who was there had a great time.

haha, bad experience?

Posted by sleepydragon on Oct-30-2004 11:32:

ive never heard a good set from him
i feel that if it wasnt for his older productions he would have never made it he is riding of the success of those tunes.
As a dj i wouldnt put him in the top 50 never mind number 1 and im not just saying that for no reason what so ever. Its cose he genuinly is a crap mixer and all round dj even his track selection is very poor he always slows the set down to often never has any real energy in them

Posted by DaveT on Oct-30-2004 11:32:

I think Tiesto is bi-polar....

He was mixing horribly (or should I say, he was lazy. Beatmatching was there, but it was just a beat match, fade over) the first two hours, the third hour his mixing did a 180 and was awesome, then after a live performance at the end of that hour, his mixing became lazy again...

Like, WTF? He obviously can mix great when he doesn't want to be lazy....why does he have to be so lazy sometimes.

Dave

Well I spose each to his own. The people in the "tracklist" thread were bitching cos his set was too fast, you can't please everyone. And I think to be able to structure a 6 hour set is near on impossible. But yes his mixing was very poor.

silly people here, go search a live somewhere

54 Jesselyn - Omnia (Techtrance Mix)

Track selection was ok, some really good tracks, but also some that i didn't like at all, some older stuff and some Tiesto tracks that we heard to much already or aren't that good. I think that the warmup was really good, but after that he played too many tracks that i didn't like.

Yeah exactly. The warm up set was fantastic, but after that,... It was a little bit boring. I didnt liked any of the songs Tiesto played first hour after the main opening. But there was awesome tech-trance tracks later

forgive me for questioning, but isnt that what a dj is supposed to do???

anyways, i caught the set and it was not different from his other sets. i saw him in dallas a few years back and he did a great job. his mixing was on and the track selection flowed superbly. i had a great night and it diffinitely left me a good impression of him. i understand that some dj's have on nights and some have off nights...maybe he was just nervous the first few hours (??)
lets see some other dj's get these massive gigs that tiesto is becoming known for... sheesh

Posted by Chris Allen on Oct-30-2004 16:18:

Just wait for tonight when he's rested up and calmed down from last night. It's going to be unreal.

I thought last night was great, his track selection was pretty good IMO but nothing too different than his other sets lately. I think he was saving himself for tonight to be honest. Let's just wait and see.

He was there so STFU! You cant have an opinion about a party which you did not attend, TIC was awesome and tietso has proven me again why he is no1 dj of the world

Posted by Dave Piazza on Oct-31-2004 10:32:

Correct me if I am wrong , but didnt Tiesto play more harder/techy tunes last year in TIC ?

It seems that he played alot of trance ( uplifing to be more precise) this year.

I think TIC 2003 was the best TIC. His intro was insane last year and he moved around alot more style wise it seemed.

Your thoughts?

I was there yesterday(saterday night) at the Gelredome, and i can say it was bloody awesome. I had the best night of my life so far and stop bashing his set if you werent there because the ambience and atmosphere was great, his tracklist was overall pretty bangin'n and he finished with 1 hour of tracks that tiesto.com visitors had picked out, so all classix work....what can you ask more. The mixing was good, the tracklist was awesome, the show as awesome, sound was awesome.....

Last year was more special because it was the first time, but imo the athmosphere was way better this year.
