The Price of Liberty
I had to go vote at the american consulate this morning (in Toronto). After getting there an hour early (I forgot to change the time on my alarm clock after daylight savings time), I get all my crap done there but they tell me that I have to courier my ballot to MY polling station, which is in California.. and it has to be there by tomorrow. So it looks like the price of liberty and freedom in the US is $28.92. Bollocks to that!

I'm actually getting it couriered from the firm i work at. That way it gets deducted from my paycheck, instead of having to pay for it upfront. |

I'm not a "defeatist".. I'm just a realist.
Do you think your "candidate" will even get enough votes to ensure funding from the government for his party (5%).. yeh didn't think so. Vote for whomever you want, but there is no escaping the two party system until legislation changes it. Fat chance of that happening. No, the US doesn't have a perfect democracy, that's why you have to make your vote count. It has been described as the lesser of two evils, but really you are voting for a party and it's policy, not for a specific candidate.

| Originally posted by placebo You're just mad that we didn't vote for Kerry. Thats how it is, people want you to vote, until they find out you don't want to vote for their candidate. Then they get pissed off. Hilarity ensues. |

| Originally posted by AwakenedAddict Haha, although I care how people vote, I recognize their right to choose. That said, I find I pretty sad that people actually think that voting for a third party candidate (especially one who has no chance to win and who has no real platform..) will be effective at all. It's pretty uneducated if you ask me |
1) I'm not really fermiliar with the UK voting system, but it's not a 2-party system is it?
2) I HATE the fact that the US is a two-party system, but until it's changed (which won't happen, since it has to be changed by legislation, and the legislative branch of the gov't is populated by YOU GUESSED IT democrats and republicans). Go vote for whomever you want....
3) Voting for candidates that have no representation in the house or senate is ludacris. If there was a system of proportional representation in place in the US, or even a mixed system, then voting for non-majority candidates would be feasible.

| Originally posted by AwakenedAddict Yeh i hear yah, but the barrier to access for "other" parties is just too high. They need 5% of the popular vote to be recognized for public funding, so that would be like 13 million votes (something like that). Even if they attained this goal, they still need to actually get seats in the house and the senate (and they'll need more than 5% of the vote to do so). I think that the US voting system (2 party, electoral college) and represtation structure (single member plurality) needs a huge revamp. |

I don't give a shit if a third party will ever be in office, I feel that if I vote for Bush or Kerry, I'm wasting my vote. Hence why I voted Libertarian.
That's why I like living in the US. You can put your 2 cents in.
Anyways, back on topic, 28 dollars to vote, thats hardcore.
