Lola Rennt (Run, Lola, Run): This film deals with choices, causes, and consequences in an interesting and playful way. Its fast pace fits well the soundtrack (which many TA's will probably like), turning a subtle philosophical debate into the background of what could be considered a 1 hour and a half long videoclip.

However, even if you just one some pointless fun, a girl running all over the city while things change around her may be entertaining as well. My father didn't agree though, he wants stuff to blow up.

Wo Hu Cang Long (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon): Poetry in motion, that's the best definition I can give. Naturally, it might look a bit awkward in the beginning to see people flight as if Dragonballz characters had come out of the Matrix, but once you understand the reason, it just the makes the film even better.

Although its suspense is soon revealed (and explained in the middle of the film, rather than in the end), it doesn't release the tension. In fact, it prevents the film from going to the wrong direction. There are some nice things they say too, that either reflect their culture or just sound nice. How amazing can that be?

My father doesn't agree though, he wanted stuff to blow up.

Fucking �m�l (Show me love): Subtle, it talks about a girl who fancies her schoolmate as naturally as another teenage romance. The beloved schoolmate, however, is another girl, and the way the film explores the romance (and their behaviour) is touching.

Seriously now, we're talking about lesbian teens! First of all, if you're a teenage and you're happy, then there's something obviously wrong with you. Second, Sweden seems to be the land of depressed people (there's a reason their techno is so abrasive after all). Homosexuals in general seem to have a quite difficult time unless they live in San Francisco. Bring it all together, in a more seriously (and dramatic) approach and you have the most intense parts of all these different worlds together. Soon enough, you realise it's not about teens, lesbian or Swedes. I've seen "Chasing Amy/Looking for Amy", by the way, it's a completely different view.

I can't believe Lukas Moodysson (the director) had been to Bras�lia and I couldn't seen him, bugger.

My father didn't watch the film, as I told him it was not porn, despite of the name.

Shinseiki Ebangerion (Neon Genesis Evangelion): Giant Robots + Schoolgirls + things blowing up = hours and hours of fun.

Don't take otakus seriously though, they religiously believe this was inspired by the kabbalah and it's a sign of the apocalypse. There are probably countless theses written about it. I believe it's due to Hideaki Anno's twisted mind and extensive use of elements that can be seen as metaphors and, as long as projection goes, each one of us will understand they differently so don't bother if all you've seen was Shinji whining and fighting monsters all long, that's most likely the truth. I personally thought the entire thing was just a big metaphor about his relationship with Asuka, but I reckon that's just my optimism and my mind being tired after enduring 12 hours of watching a cartoon. Watch it secretly, and don't even comment with the die-hard anime fan, otherwise you'll have to face a discussion twice as long as the anime series. I know I have, and to this day I regret it, as there was this girl I wanted to pull at this party and this otaku kept seeking me and I had to be polite because it was her cousin.

My father liked the way things blew up.

A beautiful mind: He saw things that weren't there. He created his own reality. Although that's what all of us do anyway, he did it differently, which seems to have put him into trouble. Nevertheless, this film pretty much shows how much we're hostages of our own minds. And there's a bonus = it's a real story. It's not a mediocre fiction, but the report of what happened to a person as real (or not) as one of us.

No faux philosophy from the matrix, no psychological explanations. The film actually tricks us into believing his reality is real, when it's just an illusion created by his mind. Isn't this what reality is all about anyway?

Reminds me that I still need to watch Pi. And that there are several other good films with good content to watch.

btw I just got done watching Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon again. If you haven't seen this film, I urge you to go do so as soon as you can - it's worth watching it as early in life as possible.
