World Leaders Express Positive Outlook

quote:
World leaders hail Bush's re-election, call for healing of global divisions over Iraq

World leaders rushed to congratulate US President George W. Bush on his re-election to a second four-year term and pledged cooperation with Washington to heal deep divisions over a host of international issues, notably Iraq and the Middle East.

can we please ditch the negativity and get on with some real issues.

this is neither a sign of defeat or victory. it's the grace that only comes from diplomacy.

this is something, i think, we all want.

True. I really hope Bush will be different in this second term, actually trying to maintain ties with the rest of the world instead of destroying them.

They are happy because they understand that while the US falls into a deeper hole under Bush, they will become stronger and stronger.

I saw most of the comments on tv yesterday, and the general trend was "Congratulations. We're not sending anymore troops. In fact we'll pull out pretty soon." Opposition leaders (at least in Denmark) were much harsher in their rhetorics I would say.
If you listened to the speeches, you would find that they all expected/hoped for better cooperation with the US, less unilateralistic behaviour, and asked for more energy being put into solving the Israel/Palestine issue - in effect criticising the first four years of the Bush administration. It is obvious that they have to take this stance as large percentages of their populations are strictly anti-Bush. So, as I see it, if you look beyond the formal congratulations you'll see an environment with very little friends and which will be difficult to navigate by Bush.

Diplomatic niceties. What, are they supposed to scream in terror? :P

I think they hope for less unilateralism and more global cooperation.

I hope Bush can turn around the arrogant direction he has led the US on globally in his last 4 years, and work with the world, especially on terrorism and the environment.

I also hope he can relax the assault on civil liberties a bit.. boo PATRIOT act.

Hmm I am hopeful about the next 4 years, but not optimistic.

let me put it another way. we rednecks ( ) have a saying about some of these leaders. they're like catchin crawfish.

"For you yankee's when you go to pick a crawfish up they raise both claws and act as if they are going to attack you... but then they creep away, walking backwards looking for a hole to crawl into."
