Exclamation Very urgent please help!!

ok i've got to make a demo TONIGHT! but i have to use my friend's laptop... here's the problem

when i record through soundforge i get this terrible static noise from the computer

also the meters are into the red on soundforge no matter how low the music is

how do i fix this and get the demo done???

thanks

go to stereo mix in the recording volume controls for winblows

put it very close to being mute, but still up a little bit

or your coming out through the booth & master improperly?

it's coming out of the mixer fine...

even when there is no audio source hooked into the mic jack the levels are almost yellow

and when i plug it in, even with the booth level alll the way down there is this computer static noise that is recorded as loud as the music

Try re installing the soundcard drivers and if that doesnt work if you know much about computers open it up n have a look at the wiring.

Theres no wiring for the sound card...plugs into a pci slot & maybe has a 3 pin connector for some added power

make sure the pre-amp is turned off for the mic input on the laptop
there should be a checkbox in advanced settings that says "+20 db boost" or something like that, make sure it's unchecked

yeah, mic inputs are not the way. On some laptops there's a "line" input instead of a mic. Just use line instead of mic.

Definitly, if you can mute the mic and use a line it will be better quality too

never ever ever use the mic jack on a soundcard!!

use the line-in

This is true, but what about people with laptops that only have a mic input?, I used to use it and I got the levels to stay nice and low, but it will record in mono, I only did it afew times, I'm planning on buying a PC Card Soundcard like the Echo Indigo IO card, got a line in and line out and I think its 24bit/96khz, not to shabby.

if the laptop doesn't have a line in.. you need something like this:

There are other things you can get, but that is prob. the cheapest and something that will suite your needs for mixing and making demos and what not.

I hate to ask this again, but i didnt remember seeing anything about if you went into windows and check the mic input problem. Also on soundforge, you have to adjust the input levels in there as well.

just re confirming

this has all the markings of his problem being that the input is mic and not line. most new laptops do not have the line input like they once did.

Go into that windows panel again, goto options and select "advanced" also make sure under properties that the mic is selected, then under the panel with MIC, it should have a tap saying "Advanced" click it and there should be the "+20db boost" option, make sure it is not selected.

actually, i have a laptop with the same problem, some laptops just cant filter out the line noise and interior cpu noise... it many times has nothing to do with settings..
