Opening night in Toronto. The Raps are actually winning??
Raptors 78
Rockets 74
(RSN)

Posted by Espresso on Nov-04-2004 02:43:

raps win 1st home game

raptors 95
rockets 88

Posted by MarkT on Nov-04-2004 02:56:

Raptors rocked...unselfish, hard working, team basketball...I love it.

If they play games HALF that entertaining for the rest of the season, the greedy hockey bitches can all stay home for as long as they'd like

ok, it was only the first game...but that was fun to watch

Posted by Sly_Guy on Nov-04-2004 03:20:

Good thread Jeff,
My predictions, as I'm the self proclaimed 'most knowledgable TA on basketball'

BEST CASE SCENARIO:
Carter is healthy, is serious about wanting a trade and actually plays hard for the first time since his second season and keeps his mouth shut in the locker room, and as a result is only minimally detrimental to the team. Bosh doesn't run out of steam like he did last season, because the [what looks like minimal] amount of extra pounds he put on during the summer allows him to bang it down low with NBA sized players for 82 games. Jalen Rose doesn't take stupid shots. Donyell Marshall isn't called upon exclusively to play center, and play extremely heavy minutes and do half the scoring for the team. Rafer Alston lives up to the contract he signed and plays at a similar level to what he did last year.
If all this happens, the raps could win 45-50 games this year, and probably lose in the second round of the playoffs, depending on whether or not the other team has a big time center/power player the raps can't control.

WORST CASE SCENARIO
Carter acts like a whiney bitch. Destroys team chemistry, allowing no one to function. Alston sucks. Jalen is stupid, Donyell loses the heart to play [a la Antonio Davis Style]. We win 20-25 games.

i'm hoping to catch some games this season .. there's gonna be some competition finally in the EAst, but should be fun to watch

Posted by matty on Nov-04-2004 03:58:

Nice start for the Raps beating Houston. I didnt see the game but from the stats it looks like Rafer played pretty good as did Bosh. Vince wasn't too involved and Mitchell for his first win.

Hope this continues

Posted by SniFFleS on Nov-04-2004 04:13:

Rafer played awesome, he set up some big plays

i hope they dont forget about marshall this season, he was there best player last year

Posted by DigDeep on Nov-04-2004 05:07:

Well on their way to the first ever undefeated season. There was more excitement in this game than there were in all 82 games combined last year!

Posted by discojoe on Nov-04-2004 05:20:

They have a really really talented team. A few holes ya. No real big man and a mediocre PG, but they have so much potential in terms of scoring. Vince, Donyell, Chris Bosh and Jalen.. Some talented players. Theres no way they should finish as bad as they did last year with that kind of offensive talent. They just need some leadership, some confidence and a coach that allows them to take advantage of that offensive talent.

Posted by Pett on Nov-04-2004 07:08:

I enjoyed watching the unselfish play tonight, if they keep this up all season we honestly have a shot at the Eastern Confrence finals

Posted by starsearcher on Nov-04-2004 15:07:

Great win over a great team They played well...hope they can keep this going

GO RAPS!

Since we have nothing else to watch (NHL'll be out for a while)

Posted by Sly_Guy on Nov-04-2004 16:26:

Rockets aren't and won't be a great team until next year. They need to gel as a team, and tracy is a guy not used to sharing the ball. It'll take some time before him and ming know how to play with each other well enough to go 55-60 wins.

The unselfish play last night was good to see, but I'm skeptical on how long it'll last. If they still play unselfishly through an 8 game losing streak then I'll have faith. Until then, I still doubt the Raptor's chances.

Scoring on the Raptors isn't as potent as you think. What seperates high scoring teams from medeocre one is the bench, and I don't see the raptors being deep enough to be a powerhouse in scoring.

Rebounding also looks like it'll be a problem without a huge inside presence.

I agree with most of the stuff you said there Andy. But i think something this squad has now that it lacked last year, is high intensity in offence. O'Neill's strategy last year of defence first translated into a lackluster offence that created no opportunities. It seems Mitchell has taken a different approach, and realizing he has a relatively small/quick team, hes gone completely opposite. Pushing the ball up the floor, making the extra passes, resulting in many opportunities (including offensive boards). So what the team lacks in height, the speed will make up for it in many cases. If im not mistaken the Raps out rebounded the Rockets lastnight, even with a Yao Ming in the middle.

If they wanna run, let's see how they fare against Detroit. That game is gonna be a tough, tough test. Those guys give you nothing for free, and as they proved last year, they can shut down the best running teams in the league by winning a helluva lot of games out west.

We'll score more this year because the reigns are a little looser, but I still think with all our perimeter play we're gonna rely too much on the jump shot in a half court set, and as a result, our scoring will suffer. This isn't the 80's and early 90's when the average player could still make an open jumper. Hell this is why the raptors should put me on the roster. Anywhere from 25' and in, I'm automatic baby!

Posted by DigDeep on Nov-04-2004 17:20:

Fuck what a crazy ass coincendence. As i was typing my response to Andys's comments, guess who walks in my fuckin store???

For those who dont know this little bald dude, its Chuck Swirsky, the play by play guy for the Raps. He needed some new Dockers, and other stuff. Got the chance to talk a little with him about the Raps. Hes optomistic, but thinks the same way as Slyguy - team is too small, and it will catch up to them in due time. But he did comment on how exciting this years squad is to watch, and that the crowd lastnight at times, got louder than he's EVER heard it before. I tried to squeeze some freeebie tickets out of him, he said he'll hook me up next time he's in my store

Me thinks a TA Raptor outing should be in order.

Posted by TheVrk on Nov-04-2004 17:36:

they played REAL well last night, and btw, i'm NOT
a fan, but i do like to see them do well - being TO of course....

but lets see how the season plays out.
if they can avoid injuries, they have a
good shot at the playoffs

Haha...Of course he does. He knows what he's talking about. Too bad he's paid to feel optimistic.

Yeah I haven't been to a raptor game since vince's 50 point game in the playoffs against the sixers. Man, oh man, I used to be the craziest fan. You have no idea...If there was ever a basketball riot, I would have been the one to start it.

Posted by DigDeep on Nov-05-2004 23:03:

Tonite - the defending champs are in town. Should be a good one.

Posted by Sly_Guy on Nov-05-2004 23:49:

It'll be fun watching them have their asses handed to them on a platter.

Nah, I love detroit basketball. In-your-face give nothing away style. They come out to play every game, and I really respect that. Not like the raps have been in recent years.

Posted by MarkT on Nov-06-2004 00:08:

whoohoo! should be a good one (I hope)

Posted by DigDeep on Nov-06-2004 01:27:

Wow. Looks like lastnight wasnt a fluke afterall

Raptors 49
Pistons 47 (Halftime)

Posted by DigDeep on Nov-06-2004 01:44:

Raptors - 79
Pistons - 71

Posted by Sly_Guy on Nov-06-2004 02:32:

what the hell's wrong with the raps?

Well, after all these years of trying to tind a secondary scorer for our team, maybe vince was the secondary scorer we've been looking for the whole time!

They played well tonight. I'll give them that. Mo pete still took some stupid shots, and donyell wasn't feeling it, but everyone else played well. Hopefully vince won't complain about not getting enough shots.

Posted by crazedcanuck on Nov-06-2004 02:59:

WoW!!

Game #1 was Alston's coming out party, and it looks like #2 was Loren Woods'.

I'm holding my breath and waiting for a month or two, but here's to hoping for big things this year!!
