I got a mean virus on my computer ....

Im off to decide what to back up and what to keep. Then Im off to format, move things around, format again and hopefully get things set up properly again. Its going to be a looooooong night.

Ive got an 80GB and a 40 GB HD. Ill be setting up a 10 GB partition for Linux, and the other 110 GB are for random windows usage. Any suggestions on partitioning?

When i reformated recently I made a 10GB Partition just for the Windows install and essential programs and components, that way it didnt get too cluttered with nonsense, than I made another larger partition for files, music, and non essential applications.

Good idea, though I think I may be using the 40 gigger for windows and program files, then the 80 gigger for data storage and back up purposes.

The reason I want to do this is Im trying to back everything up, and Ive only got 40 gigs to work with. 75% of that is already taken up by stuff i have saved from the past. If I use the 80 gig for all such storage, I hopefully wont have such an issue in the future

Additionally, Im currently not able to move any files via drag and drop, nor am I able to copy and paste files. Thus Ive had to move stuff with winrar, archiving things in and out. THIS IS A HUGE PAIN

Partitioning is splitting up a hard drive so it appears that it is multiple drives.

For example, lets say you have one (1) one hundred and twenty gig hard drive. You could split it into a 20 gig partition a 30 gig partition and a 70 gig partition. When you go to look at this drive (as in Microsoft's 'My Computer'), it will actually appear that there are three drives with the amount of space allocated to each (C:20GB, D:30GB, E:70GB)

Theres no actual physical split, the drive just reports that there is. At least, im pretty sure this is how it works.

Ive got about 90 minutes on my current rar file...
Ive got at least one more big one to do (roughly another 90 minutes, and another potentially big one (hopefully no more than 30) to move before I cant start formatting & partitioning. What I plan to do is, format the 80 gig drive into a 10 GB partition (Linux) and a 70 gig partition (data), move all the backed up folders from the 40 gig to the 70 gig, format the 40 gig, Install windows on the 40 gig, and then rearrange my data. its about 0124 locally here, so I hope to be done by 6am. Good thing I got the day off work tomorrow

eh tribu, you should get the oldschool norton commander which works on dos.
that will save you lots of time, especially considering you're using winrar

lets see if i can find it somewhere quick, actually, cant find it in a few minutes, but i did find many clones, im guessing some of them will be decent (get something for dos!) click

Just a quick question, how are you guys partitioning your drives? Are you doing it through the BIOS mode or through a software program like Partition Magic?
